US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the opening theme
to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the
1964 stage musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd, is performed by Gaga for her film Joker:
Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina
Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture,
thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered
by the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis
Jr in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track – with the results
markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album
Harlequin, is a much more stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track,
Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’
Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the
series, said.
US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the theme tune to
the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim for her film Joker: Folie à Deux
‘I said to Gaga, “If you want to do it, it’s up to you. I’m the fifth banana in this thing”.’
Peter went on to mention that he did have a favourite between the two renditions.
‘I believe the Gina Riley version, or the “Kim” version,
is the better version.’
The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the
Kath and Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick to
issue their shock at the surprising cover version.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one of the
stars of Purple Rain during the making of the film,
Susan Moonsie.
Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at
the 2004 Grammy Awards, performing a medley that included his iconic 1984
single Purple Rain.

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker: Folie à Deux, the New
York City native, 38, is releasing a single titled Disease, set to be released Friday.
Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased Tuesday

Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability
to work a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by
personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various
parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.

Syria’s Islamist rebel leader on Tuesday vowed to pursue former senior
government officials responsible for torture and war crimes, a day after he began talks on the transfer of power following president Bashar al-Assad’s ouster.
Assad fled Syria as the Islamist-led opposition alliance swept
into the capital Damascus, bringing a spectacular end on Sunday to five decades of
brutal rule by his clan.
He oversaw a crackdown on a democracy movement that erupted in 2011, sparking a war that killed 500,000 people and
forced half the country to flee their homes, millions of them finding refuge abroad.
“We will not hesitate to hold accountable the criminals, murderers, security and army officers involved in torturing the Syrian people,”
rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, now using his real name Ahmed al-Sharaa, said
Tuesday in a statement on Telegram.
“We will offer rewards to anyone who provides information about senior army and security officers involved in war crimes,” he said,
adding the incoming authorities would seek the return of officials who have fled abroad.
Sharaa held talks on Monday with outgoing prime minister Mohammed al-Jalali “to coordinate a transfer of power that guarantees the provision of services”
to Syria’s people, according to an earlier statement on Telegram.
While Syria had been at war for over 13 years, the government’s
collapse came in a matter of days in a lightning offensive led by Sharaa’s Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
(HTS).
Even as some Syrians rejoiced and others rushed to search
for loved ones in Assad’s notorious jails, Israel continued to
carry out air strikes aimed at destroying the former government’s military capabilities, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Early Tuesday, AFP journalists heard more loud explosions in Damascus.
– Israeli strikes –

The Syrian Observatory said Tuesday that Israel had “destroyed the most important military sites in Syria” with
a flurry of air strikes since the fall of Assad.
It said Israel has carried out “about 250 air strikes on Syrian territory” over the last 48 hours.
They targeted weapons depots, boats from the Assad government’s navy, and
a research centre that Western countries suspected of having links
to chemical weapons production, it said.
Near the port city of Latakia, Israel targeted an air defence
facility and damaged Syrian naval ships as well as military warehouses.

In and around the capital Damascus, strikes targeted military
installations, research centres, and the electronic warfare administration.
Israel, which borders Syria, also sent troops
into a buffer zone east of the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights after Assad’s fall,
in what Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described as a “limited and temporary step” for
“security reasons”.
Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which had been allied to Assad,
condemned the strikes late Monday and lambasted Israel for “occupying more land in the Golan Heights”.

suspected of stepping out of the ruling Baath party’s line.

Thousands of Syrians gathered Monday outside a jail synonymous with the worst atrocities
of Assad’s rule to search for relatives, many of whom had spent years in the Saydnaya facility outside Damascus,
AFP correspondents said.
Rescuers from the Syrian White Helmets group had earlier
said they were looking for potential secret doors or basements in Saydnaya.
“I ran like crazy” to get to the prison, said Aida Taha, 65, searching for her brother who was arrested in 2012.
“But I found out that some of the prisoners were still in the basements. There are three or four floors underground.”
Crowds of freed prisoners wandered the streets of Damascus distinguishable by
the marks of their ordeal: maimed by torture, weakened by illness and emaciated by hunger.
– ‘We are reborn’ –

In central Damascus on Monday, despite all the uncertainty over the future, the joy was palpable.
“It’s indescribable. We never thought this nightmare would end. We are reborn,”

“We were afraid for 55 years of speaking, even at home. We used to say the walls had ears,” Ramadan said, as people honked car horns and rebels
fired their guns into the air.
Syria’s parliament, formerly pro-Assad like the prime minister, said it supports “the will of the people to build a new Syria towards a better future governed by law and justice”.
The Baath party said it will support “a transitional phase in Syria aimed at defending the unity of the country.”

Syrian state television’s logo on the Telegram messaging app now displays the rebel
flag.
During the offensive launched on November 27, rebels met little resistance as
they wrested city after city from Assad’s control,
opening the gates of prisons along the way and freeing thousands, many of them held on political charges.
Some, like Fadwa Mahmoud, whose husband and son are missing, posted calls for help on social media.
“Where are you, Maher and Abdel Aziz? It’s time for me to hear your news. Oh God, please come back,” wrote Mahmoud, herself a
former detainee.
Rooted in Syria’s branch of Al-Qaeda, HTS is proscribed by Western governments as
a terrorist group but has sought to soften its image in recent years.
Syria: zones of control of the different forces
Germany and France said in a statement they were ready to cooperate with
Syria’s new leadership “on the basis of fundamental human rights and the protection of ethnic and religious minorities.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in Saudi Arabia on Monday,
said HTS must reject “terrorism and violence” before Britain can engage
with the group designated “terrorist” by London.
Washington’s top diplomat, Antony Blinken, said the United States — with hundreds of troops in Syria as part of a coalition against Islamic State group jihadists — is determined
to prevent IS from re-establishing safe havens.
“We have a clear interest in doing what we can to avoid the fragmentation of Syria, mass migrations from Syria and, of course, the export of terrorism and extremism,” Blinken said.
– Assad in Moscow? –

The United Nations said that whoever ends up in power in Syria must hold the
Assad regime to account. But how the ousted leader
might face justice remains unclear, especially after the Kremlin refused on Monday to confirm reports by Russian news agencies that he had fled to Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, said that if
Russia granted asylum to Assad and his family, it would be a decision taken by President Vladimir Putin.
The Syrian embassy in Moscow raised the opposition’s flag, and
the Kremlin said it would discuss the status of its bases in Syria
with the new authorities.
Russia played an instrumental role in keeping Assad in power, directly intervening in the war starting in 2015 and providing air cover to the
army during the rebellion.

Rieslings give off the scent of peaches, plums, and cherries.
This white wine has a lighter body than Chardonnay. When paired
with young Gouda cheese brands, the flavors combine and become sweet with
a soft bite or tartness.
Chardonnay and Mild Cheddar Cheese
Chardonnay is one of the most popular wines in the world.
Fermented plump-green grapes and oak barrels give it its buttery mouth
feel. The fruitiness and crispness of the medium-body Chardonnay makes it pair perfectly with mild cheeses.
Made from cow’s milk, the creaminess of young cheddar cheese enhances the pear and apple

with the earthiness of Chevre. Chevre is goat cheese and taste much different then cheese made with cow’s milk.
Zinfandel and Muenster
A thick dark jam swirled together with black pepper
describes this medium to full-body red wine, Zinfandel. Muenster
is mild, almost bland, and is soft on the palate. The smoothness
of this cow cheese will not overpower the spiciness of Zins, but rather
compliment it.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Extra Sharp Cheeses
Cabernets are very dry and deep red wines. Known for their velvety richness and full body,
Cabs are acidic and have tannins. Because of the strong flavors, they pair well with a cheese that
competes equally in strong tastes.
Aged cheese, such as extra sharp cheddar, pair well
with this high alcohol beverage. Gorgonzola, a salty blue cheese, is a good complement.
Roquefort is a well-known, readily available tangy blue cheese that works well also.

Merlot and Aged Gouda
Another dry red wine, Merlot is different from Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlots are medium to full-body and
a little softer than cabs, and have less tannin. Merlots have strong hints

Ages Gouda is very firm and cuts neatly into small squares.
It is sharp and stands up to richer dark red wines.

Pinot Noir and Gruyere
Pinot Noir is a light-medium red wine and not a dark as Merlots and Cabs.
Pinot Noir wine has a fruity jam flavor, like raspberries and strawberries.

a hint of saltiness. It does not overpower the palate and brings out the
ripeness of the Pinot Noir.
Port and Stilton
Port is sweet, red dessert wine. It does not have
the tannins and acidity of other reds. Port is a fortified with the liquor Brandy.
Once combined, the Brandy prevents the grapes from converting to more alcohol and keeps the wine ‘youthful’.
Stilton is a strong blue cheese. The tastes of the sweet Port mixed
with the robust, salty Stilton makes for a very intense pairing.
Serve this dish in small bite-size portions with a small but hearty glass of port.
It can be overwhelming in large quantities.
