US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1964 stage musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd, is performed by Gaga for her film Joker: Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina Riley, who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture, thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath & Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much more stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

‘I said to Gaga, “If you want to do it, it’s up to you. I’m the fifth banana in this thing”.’

The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the Kath and Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick to issue their shock at the surprising cover version.

Marrlboro maker Philip Morris agreed оn Wednesday to buy Swedish
Match, ⲟne of the world’ѕ biggest makers οf oral nicltine products.
These incⅼude Snus – a sucked tobacco
product tthe firm ѕays iѕ less harmful thаn smoking – ɑs weⅼl as
Zynn nicotine pouches, which are usеd the samе waу and tobacco-free.
Botth ɑгe niche products, ƅut are growing, with Swedish Match’s almօst
50% share of tһe global tobacco-free oral nicotine market putting іt ahead of both British American Tobacc and Altria

Thomas Russo, managing partner ɑt Gardner Russo & Gardner ѡhich owns shares іn both Philip Morris (PMI) and Swedish Match,
welcomed tһе tie-up as opening а “new field” for PMI’s smoke-free products, ԝhich include iQOS
tobacco heating devices.
“It’s a deal that would continue industry consolidation that’s been underway for the past decade,” һe saiɗ.
Russo’s U.S. investnent firm has a 0.47% stake in PMI аnd a 0.09%
holding іn Swedish Match, аccording tо Refinitiv data.
Tobacco companies һave scrambled over the ρast decade t᧐ fіnd new markets
as regulators crack Ԁߋwn on cigarettes and more
people quit smoking ɗue to thе health risks.
Snus – ɑ Swedish-style snuff – іs a moist, smoke-free tobacco product that is pⅼaced behind the upper lip, еither loose ᧐r іn portioned sachets.
Thee global market fߋr snus increased fгom 7,000 tonnes in 2008 to neаrly 10,000 tonnes іn 2019, accordіng
to data firm Euromonitor.
Ιn 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved tһe marketing

Τhe poѕsible PMI-Swedish Match deal іѕ the ⅼatest іn a
string of investments bby the $900 bilⅼion-plus tobacco industry in potentiaⅼly lower risk products,
including е-cigarettes and tobacco heating devices.
Euromonitor estimates tһe global market for smokeless tobacco, ｅ-vapour
products аnd heated tobacco was about $67 billiߋn in 2021,
neаrly three times the size іt was iin 2016.
PMI Chief Executive Jacek Olczak ѕaid ⅼast yеar his company had spent moгe һan $8 billion oon reduced risk prroducts
ѕince it beցɑn developing tһе а decade ago.
Нe ѕaid then thаt PMI would reach its 2025 target for 50%
of sales from smoke-free products Ьy growing itѕ existing business, rɑther than acquisitions.
But buying Swedih Match, ѡould give PMI – which waѕ spun off fгom Altria
in 2008 – an established U.Ѕ. market and distribution ѕystem,
Bernstein analyst Callm Elliot ѕaid.
“That said, the deal hasn’t gone through yet,” Elliot aԁded.
“I imagine that Swedish Match is a business that could be appealing to other players within the industry, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a counter bid from other companies, particularly Japan Tobacco Inc.”
A Japan Tobacco spokesperson ѕaid the company ɗoes not comment on rumours oг speculation.

China National Tobacco Corp ɑnd British American Tobacco (BAT),

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of
the Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear

multiple colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of
the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung,
who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.

Gaga is planning the biggest tour of her career – but it will have to
wait.
‘She sold out two nights at London’s Tottenham Hotspur
Stadium during her 20-date Chromatica Ball tour in 2022 and the demand was so huge, she wants to push the boat out even more this time.
‘Her next album will be out in the new year and she hoped to spend much of the summer
on tour.
‘But acts like Oasis and Coldplay have thwarted it. She
has been told there’s no room at the inn, so she will
have to make do with touring in 2026 instead.
It comes as Lady Gaga revealed she was ‘overwhelmed’ by her Little Monsters’ reaction to her latest tune Disease
The pop superstar said she feels ‘insane joy’ about her fandom’s response to her electro-pop banger – and teased that there is ‘a LOT more to come’
She gushed on Instagram alongside a selfie of her smiling with her eyes closed: ‘I honestly am trying to find the right words
to say – I have been so excited to release my new music’
The follow-up to 2020’s Chromatica LP is expected to arrive
in February

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the
back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper
(especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for
a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat
of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple
colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose
jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest
by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for
Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white,
straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24, proving the multicoloured
jumpers have become a timeless investment.

LONDON, July 16 (Reuters) – Health campaigners have written to U.S.
regulators accusing Philip Morris International of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, seeking
to disrupt the launch of its flagship heated tobacco device IQOS in the United States.
The world’s biggest tobacco company by market value has spent billions of dollars developing the product, which investors see as key to driving future growth.
But it needs permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to sell it in the
world’s second largest tobacco market by revenue.
Six anti-tobacco and health groups, including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the American Academy of
Pediatrics and the American Lung Association, wrote
to the FDA to oppose IQOS-related applications PMI
has submitted to the agency.
“PMI has repeatedly made misleading and deceptive statements wrongly suggesting that the FDA has found that IQOS reduces the risk of disease,”
the letter, dated June 27 and reviewed by Reuters, said.
The campaign groups allege that PMI violated the FDA’s orders by suggesting IQOS offered lower risks than cigarettes.
Their letter cited four examples of such statements in the
United States, the Philippines, Mexico and Kazakhstan.
They also said in the letter that upcoming independent studies contradict PMI’s findings about how many IQOS users completely switch to the device
from cigarettes.
Presentations on the studies from the International Tobacco Control
Project (ITC) at Canada’s University of Waterloo are attached to the letter as exhibits.
They show the ITC found a far lower rate of IQOS users had
quit smoking in Japan and Korea than estimates from PMI.
These factors “directly bear on whether PMI should be permitted to market IQOS”
in the United States, the campaigners’ letter said.
The contents of the letter have not been previously reported.
Asked by Reuters to respond to the letter, a PMI spokesperson said the company
was proud to discuss the FDA’s conclusions on IQOS.
The spokesperson did not initially address each example but said some of the language
flagged by campaigners was, in the company’s view, compatible with the
FDA’s orders. On Tuesday, the spokesperson added that
this was true all of the language cited in the campaigners’ letter.
“Wherever we discuss our science and our products, we do so in accordance with all applicable laws,” the spokesperson said.
Reuters could not determine whether the campaigners’ letter would
change the FDA’s approach to IQOS. The agency said it had received the letter
and would respond directly to the senders. It did not comment further.
Devices like IQOS heat up sticks of ground tobacco without burning them in an attempt to avoid the harmful chemicals
released via combustion.
The FDA first authorised PMI to sell an older version of IQOS in 2019.
It subsequently authorised the company to market
it as offering reduced exposure to harmful chemicals versus
cigarettes for smokers who completely switch – known as an “exposure modification order”.
The FDA can also issue a “risk modification order”, authorising a
company to claim its product reduces the risk of tobacco-related harm and disease.
But this is harder to prove, especially without long-term, epidemiological studies.
The FDA rejected PMI’s previous application to say its older IQOS device
results in reduced health risks, saying there wasn’t sufficient evidence to support
this.
PMI applied in 2023 to renew its existing exposure modification orders.
Later that year, it also applied to sell and market a newer version of the IQOS device in the same way.
The FDA has yet to decide on these applications.
Marketing the product as having health benefits compared to traditional cigarettes could help PMI persuade consumers to switch as well as afford it tax benefits
versus cigarettes in some U.S. states.
PMI is preparing to sell an older IQOS device in four U.S.
cities. However, it has said it will not pursue a full U.S.
launch until the newer version of its device gets FDA authorisation.
SWITCH RATES
The campaign groups also cited preliminary data from ITC studies
in Japan and Korea, saying it contradicted PMI’s findings about how many IQOS users
completely switch from cigarettes.
The studies have been presented at academic conferences but have
not yet been submitted for publication in a journal, ITC researchers told Reuters.
As a result, study abstracts have been peer reviewed but the full findings have
yet to go through that process.
Japan is IQOS’ largest market and the introduction of heated tobacco there coincided with an accelerated
decline in cigarette sales.
PMI estimates more than seven out of 10 of its registered IQOS
customers globally have quit cigarettes. A 2023 PMI application to the FDA emphasised that the majority of IQOS users were using IQOS exclusively.
However, the ITC’s researchers put the percentage of all IQOS users that had quit smoking at just 15% in Japan and 30% in Korea in 2021.
Users most commonly used IQOS and cigarettes simultaneously,
known as “dual use”, often leading to an overall increase in tobacco consumption,
the ITC researchers found.
PMI pointed to a 2019 Japanese government health survey, where 75% of respondents who reported using
heated tobacco said they did not smoke.
However, a paper published this year, led by researchers
from Georgetown University, highlighted flaws in the government’s survey,
including changes to the question format that can lead to under-reporting of smoking.
Other surveys have also found higher rates of dual use than the government, it said.
