    Thｅ ցroups sаid social media firms ɑrе not doing ｅnough to regulate “influencers” on tһeir platforms
    who are hired by companies to promote nicotine products.

    Νo law specіfically prevents ohline tobacco оr e-cigarette marketing, Ьut social mdia firms һave policies limiting іt.
    The health groups said inn tһeir letter tһat tһe uѕe of online personalities сreates
    a “loophole” in thoѕe policies and allows “rampant marketing” of tobacco
    aand ᧐ther nicotine products tο youth.

    Instagram annd itss parent company, Facebook, ɑrе

    orr “models who are or appear to be under the age of 25.”

    Philip Morris saіd May 10 that it launched an internal
    investigation ɑnd suspended ɑll “product-related digital influencer actions globally” after Reuters sought tһe company’s comment on examples of
    Instagram posts ɑnd photographs depicting yߋung, hip women advertising IQOS.

    Philip Morris spokesman Ryan Sparrow ѕaid thhe firm һad “directed that there should be no new posts” by influencers.

    Joaquin reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his
    portrayal in the 2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel
    (Harley Quinn). 

    However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a
    comic book movie at the time of writing. 

    Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this
    year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+. 

    On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience
    score of 31 percent and a critic score of 33 percent. 

    The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the
    domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

    The movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but
    the number has since drastically dropped. 

    Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters
    – and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.

    The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both
    critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the
    76th Venice International Film Festival. 

    Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy
    Award for Best Original Score. 

    The sequel also screened during the Venice International
    Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation,
    per Deadline.   

    However, audiences have since taken to X after the movie released in theaters on Friday – and shared their opinions on the sequel,
    which features musical sequences. 

    One fan penned, ‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this. what
    happened to the script?’ while another added, ‘is it that bad,
    ‘ followed by a crying face emoji. 

    ‘Ironically I feel that a musical, if done well,
    could have been a good choice. It’d show how much of an unreliable narrator
    Fleck is,’ one typed. 

    ‘But with some original songs, that keep everything vague, not just
    covers. Also when I heard of the ending I snorted fr.’ 

    A social media user wrote, ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’ 

    ‘Maybe he [Phillips] only had an hour long movie, and
    decided to randomly add musical scenes to fill the runtime,’ one penned.

    Rating:

    Venice, a city long associated with masks and masquerades,
    was the perfect place to unveil Joker five years ago; and last month, at
    the venerable film festival there, it was followed by
    the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux.

    The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role,
    this time joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose
    we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.

    We’ve known since A Star Is Born in 2018 that she can act, but
    she really is terrific in a bad-girl role. They’d have loved her at St Trinian’s.

    This film is audaciously different in style from the original, not as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all
    the same.

    Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane
    enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime enjoying
    his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the
    warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds
    him cigarettes in return for jokes.

    Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the mask or the vulnerable fellow behind it?
    Either way, identity confusion is the theme of this film, which keeps being billed as a musical. 

    It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.
    And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that make them look like
    psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La
    Land (2016).

    Moreover, it is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953 classic The Band
    Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.

    The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips and his co-writer Scott
    Silver skilfully toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which
    way the narrative is going to go, it confounds us by wheeling
    off in another direction.

    For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady
    heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness, writes Brian Viner 

    Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a
    smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder.
    Is the defendant accused of five murders Arthur, or is it Joker?
    His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show it is the former; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.

    For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness; not
    quite comparable with all-time greats such as
    Psycho (1960) and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975),
    but not too far off.

    – Joker’s Gotham, of course, is a lightly fictionalised version of New York City.
    The real thing is the backdrop to A Different Man, another absorbing story, splendidly written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, about an urban loner struggling with life.

    In the case of the troubled, self-conscious Edward (Sebastian Stan), an aspiring actor, that’s
    apparently because he has a disfiguring craniofacial condition. Instructional corporate videos seem to be about as
    far as he can get in the acting world.

    There are obvious echoes of The Elephant Man (1980), and
    for that matter of recent release The Substance, in which Demi Moore’s character, a former movie
    star ‘disfigured’ by a few wrinkles, finds a way of transforming into her own younger self.

    Here, Edward is told by a doctor that ‘an alternative path has presented itself’.

    In other words, medical science has found a way to reverse his
    condition, turning him into a perfectly attractive middle-aged man.

    But Schimberg’s point, made with great satirical swagger, is that Edward, despite his
    radical change in appearance, is still the same person underneath that he
    always was.

    In his former condition he was befriended by his pretty, charismatic neighbour, Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a playwright.
    Now he is able to fall into bed with her, and to star in a play she has
    written about their relationship, little though she knows of his real identity.

    I was even reminded of Tootsie (1982) and Mrs Doubtfire (1993)
    as Edward’s new persona fundamentally fails to alter who he actually is.
    This is illuminated by the arrival of Oswald, an Englishman with the same condition Edward once had, but popular, witty,
    confident, and gloriously played by Adam Pearson (who really does suffer
    from a disfiguring condition called neurofibromatosis).

    Pearson is probably best-known for his debut film, Jonathan Glazer’s brilliant Under The Skin (2013).
    Which is apt, because this picture, too, is about what’s
    under the skin.

    Paul Weller’s film debut? That’s entertainment!
    The 68th London Film Festival opens next week with the world premiere of Blitz, director Steve McQueen’s
    drama set in London as the Luftwaffe’s bombs rain down night after
    night.

    Saoirse Ronan, for my money one of the most talented actresses of her generation, plays Rita, an East End mum
    whose son George (Elliott Heffernan) goes missing.
    It sounds intriguing even without the casting of The Jam’s former front man Paul Weller
    — in his feature film debut — as Rita’s father.

    I’m also very much looking forward to another world premiere, Joy, the story of the three brilliant British medical pioneers whose work on IVF led to the world’s
    first ‘test-tube’ baby, Louise Brown, in 1978.

    Dec 13 (Reuters) – Software firm Databricks is nearing
    a deal that could become one of the largest venture capital funding rounds in history, as investors have shown a strong
    appetite to own a piece of the fast-growing data analytics firm, three sources said on Friday.

    The round, almost twice oversubscribed, could top $9.5
    billion when it is finalized next week, exceeding the company’s original goal and higher than what was discussed earlier, the sources told Reuters, cautioning the final number could still go up.

    The San Francisco-based company, which helps enterprises process and analyze
    their data, is expected to fetch a valuation of over $60 billion at a price of $92.50 per share.

    That price is considered a bargain in the eyes
    of some investors, given that the company’s projected revenue for the next
    fiscal year is $3.8 billion, said the sources, who requested
    anonymity to discuss private matters.

    Thrive Capital and returning investors Andreessen Horowitz, Insight Partners, as well
    as Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC are expected to lead this mega round,
    according to one of the sources.

    In conjunction with the equity raise, the company is also
    in talks to raise $4.5 billion in debt financing, including a $2.5 billion term loan from direct lenders, one of the sources added.
    Bloomberg first reported on the private debt raise.

    Databricks, founded in 2013, is a data analytics and artificial-intelligence
    company. It provides a cloud-based platform to help enterprises
    build and govern data and AI applications.

    Databricks and Thrive Capital declined to comment.
    Insight, Andreessen Horowitz and GIC did not immediately respond to request for comment.

    This high-profile round would mark a jump in valuation for the 11-year-old company that has yet to
    make a profit. The firm was valued at $43 billion in September.
    The move would also be a major win for early employees, as the company plans to dedicate the funding to
    buy back expiring restricted stock units from early employees and
    cover the associated tax costs. As part of the deal, the company plans to issue
    preferred shares to investors participating in the round, the sources said.

    Databricks has benefited from the AI boom by selling
    more tools that help clients build and deploy AI applications using
    the growing volume of data they already store with the company.
    It competes with Snowflake, which commands a market cap of about $56 billion with
    expected revenue of $3.4 billion in the fiscal year ending in January 2025.
    The move to raise outsized funding specifically to address
    the expiring employee options issue, instead of
    adding to its balance sheet, mirrors a move by payment company
    Stripe, which raised $6.5 billion last year at a
    valuation of $50 billion.

    Such mega deals highlight the amount of funds available in the venture capital system
    and the appetite for top-notch names. Investors are doubling down on AI companies and
    supporting firms to remain private longer, enabling rarely seen round sizes such as OpenAI’s $6.5 billion raise at a $165
    billion valuation and xAI’s $6 billion raise.

    The move signals that Databricks and other top public market candidates are in no rush to go public, despite expectations of a resurgence of venture capital-backed initial
    public offerings in 2025.
