And it all paid off. He was even a security guard as well? You have to give it to Mike Adenuga. Honestly, I never knew this side of him. But I knew someone who could build a telecoms giant like Globacom and other conglomerates has to be a real ‘Bull’ in nature.”
Omojuwa acknowledged that while much had been written about Adenuga’s net worth, so little is really known about him and what he’s truly worth. He, therefore, suggested that the best way to celebrate him and further inspire Nigerians is a movie focusing on the businesses he built and the impact he made through them.
“Inspiring thread,” Omojuwa wrote. “Mike Adenuga’s story would make for a great movie. And whatever Forbes says he is worth, multiply by 5”.
Omojuwa also noted that the Forbes Model for determining the rich list may not necessarily work for Africa because wealth is built differently. Recall that in April 2022, Forbes released its annual World’s Billionaires List for 2022. This year’s list ranks 2,668 billionaires worldwide, with Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote and Mike Adenuga ranked 1st and 2nd richest Africans respectively.
According to him, “The Forbes model is overly reliant on stocks and hardly, if ever, moderate their calculations with debts, just stocks as the primary and often times only arbiter. Wealth in Africa plays differently. They need to have the prevailing culture and norms moderate their strategy.”

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians,
unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening
in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents
have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what
they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’,
highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes
and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist
platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get
on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out
and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the
Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former
third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular
vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt
in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including
California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional
parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members
in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’
views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right
Liberal Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent
to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal
seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the
lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three
conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was
first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court,
who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals,
however.

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and
former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of
Fowler.
And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as
a Queensland state MP before serving the past three
decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and
a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew
to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the
Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major party MPs
since Federation in 1901.

Julie Bishop and Barnaby Joyce have spent the second day of a long eight-week campaign trail drinking alcohol with local workers.
Ms Bishop spent Tuesday sipping wine with staff at an Adelaide winery to
butter up local voters ahead of the Double Dissolution election on July 2, announced by Malcolm Turnbull on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Mr Joyce poured himself a beer behind the bar of an outer-north
Brisbane tavern and shook hands with staff on the second full

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election,
set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred

peaceful southern African nation where Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a “sham” by the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and
legislative polls, billed as the toughest
yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South
africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems,
including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had
run out of batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with voters
still in the queues, it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed
up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:
30 am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm on Wednesday
but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply
didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes,
sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed.
This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be
the boss), and transformed into the brilliant
Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand,
went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened
as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000
a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the
doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome –
albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a
very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table
lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily
confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides
whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette
products and canceled all product launches for the
year in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA
sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as
well as related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and
decided to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.

Anyone who knows me has invariably been subject to a spiel about
how much I love Claudia Winkleman. In part, it’s because
she’s so silly, and in part, it’s because I’m a huge fan of everything she presents,
from Strictly to The Traitors.
But even more than any of that, it’s because I’m obsessed with everything she wears.
I’ve spent a fortune copying her exact outfits, from her Sister Jane heart
cutout dress to a bedazzled Nadine Merabi blazer that
I definitely don’t go anywhere fancy enough to wear.
Since 2005, Claudia has worked with stylist Sinead McKeefry to perfect her signature
style. I’d describe it as soft goth: lots of black, velvet and chunky knits, with a fair few sequins and prints (particularly tartan) thrown in. I’m not alone in my reverence:
there are entire Instagram accounts dedicated to tracking down the presenter’s outfits.
But while they offer incredibly useful style inspo,
two issues arise repeatedly: Claudia’s clothes are usually hugely expensive or sold out (or both).
So when the Strictly host stepped out in a typically preppy black velvet mini dress on Sunday,
you’d be forgiven for assuming it was by
some top-end designer. Well, you’d be wrong.
The mini dress actually came courtesy of one of our favourite high street brands, Albaray –
and you can pick it up for less than £100.
The dress is made from plush fabric with contrast
satin detailing. The velvet makes it a little festive, perfect for celebratory bashes over the next few months, particularly when paired with white stilettos
à la Claud. But it could be just as easily dressed down with white
trainers or ballet flats and a trench for a chic office outfit, so you’ll certainly get your wear out of it.
Like all of Albaray’s products, it’s ethically made using responsible fabric
and sent via a carbon-neutral shipping method, so you can feel good about the dress’s eco-credentials as well as how it looks.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place
hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms
that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual
electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes
– and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that
disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made
– but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom
many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency
and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.

scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000
under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might
secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency
measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens
or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal
of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest
too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political
donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary
to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about
the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à
Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their
irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions
of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect
immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next
election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth
comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond
Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking
advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years
to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get
these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer
their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being
in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Tim Dillon, who makes a brief appearance in Joker: Folie à
Deux, has described the new sequel as ‘terrible’ and ‘the worst film ever
made’.
The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel
(Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.
Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted
he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming.
Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said:
‘It’s the worst film ever made.
‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.
This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent
the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism! All these think
pieces.

them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb,
man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’
It’s not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the
sequel took to social media after its release last month to
defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its
predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie
and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga
joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people
are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try
to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs
or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how
it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom
and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

‘Gaga is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is
shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before
it premiered,’ a source exclusively told DailyMail.com.
‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much
respect for the DC comics fan base.’
They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll
out as they want to move on this from as quickly as possible.’

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the
heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear
themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed
electoral reforms that the major parties look set
to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
on the amount candidates can spend in individual
electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a
$90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major
parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for
donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using
their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and
frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much
greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with
the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed
to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’
and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just
might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must
have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward
by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt

The major parties have long complained about the
influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations
from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a
mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to
take effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before
the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb
and understand the changes before preparing for
them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I
imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years
to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented,
the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated
in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and
blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Joker: Folie À Deux is heading to streaming,
just weeks after its theatrical release.
The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, will be available to rent from home starting October 29,
in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros. investment
into the film, as per Variety.
The musical, which bombed at the box office, is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to $200 million in its theatrical
run’ according to the publication.
The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.

saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly

‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4
million globally after three days of release.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered
a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being
slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.
Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore
in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the
box office on opening night.
The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’
and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel,

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some
down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not
include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC
and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge
past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather
than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening
for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told
a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is
kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022
and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director
would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re
going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the
LA premiere September 30
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported
the decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the

Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz

Marlboro and Chesterfield, has been trying to transform itself from
the world’s biggest tobacco firm into a scientific hub that can help smokers quit
for good.
It has invested more than £8.5billion in this ‘smoke-free future’ – from research papers
to promotion of new products.
Olczak believes that a move on cigarettes similar to the combustion engine would have to
be on a timescale that gives consumers and the industry time to respond
and change.

‘Looking at what the UK is doing in the car industry, saying that as of a certain year you are not allowed to
produce petrol cars, we could have this with tobacco too,’ he told the Mail.
Olczak was himself a smoker for two decades until he tried the brand’s IQOS
heated tobacco device, which costs £39 for a starter kit.
Products such as heated tobacco and e-vapes now account for
nearly 35pc of total annual revenues at PMI.
And the Polish businessman, who wants the company to become a so-called ‘ESG’ stock that qualifies to be included in funds that invest on environmental, social and governance principles,
said government action would help to speed up the switch.
New petrol and diesel cars and vans will be banned in the UK from 2030 – forcing manufacturers to produce green alternatives and putting pressure on drivers
to go green.

Olczak, 58, also drew an analogy with the switch to energy-saving lightbulbs.
‘In different countries they had a number of investment schemes to promote research
and development to see whether you can produce light with
much less energy,’ he said.
The main thrust of Olczak’s argument is that governments could reduce smoking
and the costs to health services if they supported tobacco companies like PMI
to research alternatives which are less damaging to health
– while setting a deadline for banning traditional cigarettes.

There could be a tenfold reduction in deaths linked to smoking if smokers fully switched to smoke-free products, based on World Health Organisation data.
In the past, PMI – whose brand was advertised by the Marlboro Man from the 1950s to the late 1990s – has fought lawsuits that alleged it hid the dangers associated with smoking.
But Olczak, who became chief executive in 2021 after decades at PMI, said the business
has fundamentally changed – so much so that cigarettes now, in his view, ‘belong in museums’.
Speaking at a recent event in London, Olczak
said: ‘When governments – and organisations that lobby them –
prevent men and women who continue to smoke from accessing less harmful alternatives,
and when they perpetuate misinformation about these products, it has a direct correlation to the persistence of smoking.
‘It’s time for anti-tobacco organisations to stop fighting against us and start fighting for adults who smoke.’
He praised Sweden and Japan for their approach to smoking
alternatives in contrast with Brazil and Singapore, which have banned certain less
harmful options.
PMI’s sales of cigarettes are still strong in the Middle East, Africa, south-east Asia and the Americas.

Philip Morris claims that IQOS is less toxic than cigarettes, but multiple papers in an issue of the
journal Tobacco Control concluded that the company’s own data does not fully support those claims.
Research shows that although IQOS may have lower levels
of some toxicants than cigarettes, it can still expose users to higher levels of
other toxicants.

week.
The iconic songstress, 56, who is best known for the 1997 Titanic soundtrack song,
was seen attempting to stream her rendition of Edith Piaf’s Hymne à l’amour – but
Siri failed to understand her and instead suggested My Heart Will Go
On.
In the clip, Dion says: ‘Hey Siri, play Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion?’ with
Siri responding: ‘I cannot find that track
by Céline Dion but here is My Heart Will Go On. ”
A frustrated Dion said: ‘No! Hello, No, no, no, Hey Siri, can you play Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion please?’
Again, Siri replied: ‘I cannot find that track by Céline Dion but here is My Heart Will Go On.’

Dion burst out laughing and said ‘never mind!’ before suggesting she ask the question in a strong French accent.
After this Siri responded: ‘Okay, here is ‘Hymne à l’amour by Céline Dion.’
Dion looked shocked before smiling and giving the thumbs up.
In July Dion made a musical comeback with the track at the 2024 Paris Olympic Opening Ceremony amid her battle with incurable condition, stiff-person syndrome.
28 years after making her Olympic debut in 1996 at Atlanta’s stadium, Celine proved she’s still got it following her emotional act in the French city at the Eiffel Tower.
And after bringing fans to tears, Celine reflected on the iconic moment with a heartfelt message on X.
She wrote: ‘I’m honored to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities!
‘Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance.

The My Heart Will Go On songstress looked to
be on the verge of tears as she finished the performance to cheers from the crowd, whilst viewers at home were also left emotional.
