Boris Johnson has announced his resignation as UK prime minister after less than three years in Number 10.
Speaking from Downing Street on Thursday afternoon, July 7, he thanked the millions of people who voted for him and said the reason why he had fought so long to remain at Number 10 was because “I thought it was my job, my duty and my obligation to you”.
Mr Johnson said it was “painful not to see it through”, but added: “No one in politics is remotely indispensable.”
He said he had tried to persuade his cabinet it would be “eccentric” to change prime minister now but “I regret not to have been successful in those arguments”.
Mr Johnson said the process to appoint a new leader would begin now, with a timetable set out next week.
The announcement comes after a series of scandals and months of political turbulence struck his governtment, with several Conservative politicians, including health secretary and chancellor, resigning from their positions.
In their resignation letters and speeches in the House of Commons, ministers said they were fed up with Johnson and his self-inflicted scandals, stoked by his prevarications, with one former official saying “enough is enough.”
Johnson, who had vowed to cling on to power, was facing the heat for his shifting claims on Chris Pincher, a lawmaker who stepped down as a government whip on June 30 following allegations of sexual misconduct.
Last Thursday, the Sun newspaper broke the news that Pincher, a Conservative MP, resigned after a boozy evening at the Carlton private members club where he allegedly groped two men, touching at least one of them in the groin.
Pincher resigned saying he had embarrassed himself and other people in a state of drunkenness. Following the resignation, the government announced that no further action would be taken against Pincher and that he would retain his job as an MP as he had recognised his misconduct. This enraged the Conservative MPs, BBC reported.
This was not the first time allegations of sexual misconduct were levelled against Pincher, who was elevated to the position of power as the party’s deputy chief whip by Johnson.
After initial claims that the PM was not aware of allegations of misconduct against Pincher before appointing him as deputy chief whip, reports emerged that Johnson was not just informed about a formal complaint against Pincher in 2019-20 but was also personally briefed about it.
On Tuesday, Johnson admitted he was informed about the complaint in 2019 and apologised for appointing Pincher to the government role.
The Pincher scandal is the latest in a series of scandals Johnson has faced. After being criticised for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was accused in the ‘Partygate’ scandal which stemmed from parties and gatherings at Downing Street organised during the pandemic lockdowns.
Johnson was fined by the police in April for breaking the law and attending a birthday party during lockdown in June 2020.

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the
Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due
to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of
DC two months before production began on Joker 2
in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the
studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner
Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at
a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost
around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what
the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’;

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining
static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.

the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to
premiere the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the
decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the
sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve
Coogan.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness
over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he told journalists ahead of a
Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024,
an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast
from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for
Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers
last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic
product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try
to return the economy to growth.
“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround,
“but we have to build on it.”
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or
to put them back in order where necessary.
“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because
he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday
evening.
“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.
“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated
U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said
it aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues to
come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette
purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry
into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products,
and had been expecting it from May 2024 next year.
Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come
after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October
and expected it from 2025, he continued.
“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine
tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he
continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year
would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products
in the U.S. “now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies,
said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said,
adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big tobacco companies operating
outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including
for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets
for IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.
