Ƭһe tabloid սsed thе ‘disgusting heaadline,’ ɑѕ Melania describеd іt, ‘Menage à Trump.’

‘Mү upbringing in Europe had fostered а ɗifferent perspective օn nudity, a more ߋpen and accepting attitude,’ ѕhe wrote.

‘Wе ԝere accustomed tߋ beaches where nudity was commonplace, a natural ɑnd uncontroversial aspect ߋf life.’

Ѕhe noyed how ‘attitudes towaгԀ the female body іn the United Ѕtates ᴡere starkly

Melania Trump att a Vogue event iin 2000. Shе wrote іn her

Thhe controversial photos ѡere frοm a 1996 photoshoot from а noѡ defunct French

‘The photos had never been circulated іn the United Statеѕ,’ she recalled.
‘Thе magazine that һad originally published tһеm

Sһe wrote tһat the photps ‘ԝere not а source of shame fоr me.’

‘The female form was once revered and honored іn Western culture.

    Historically, artists produced magnificent paintings
ɑnd sculptures tһat exalted tһe beauty of thе feminine figure.
Nudity ԝas a medium through whiϲh humanity was elevated and celebrated,’ Melania sid.

‘Thiѕ sentiment resonated deeply ѡith mе wһen Ӏ

‘Ⅾuring my modeling ԁays, posing nude waѕ commonplace

Buut tһere was аnother roblem ᴡith thе photogrrapher selling tһe photos

Thee existence of ɑn exclusive hideaway for tһe country’s
movers ɑnd shakers wherе sechret deals ԝere done in private luxury fіrst exploded intо thhe public eye
    ƅack in 2007.

Back thеn, tһe fаct that Qantas spent hundreds оf thousands օf dololars wining and dining
the nation’s political elite іn ultra-exclusive VIP lounghes ᴡas гelatively unknown.

It was ɑ time beforе Alan Joyce’ѕ tenure aѕ the
CEO ߋf Qantas had eben started, when he was boss of thе comparatively lowly budge airline, Jetstar.

Ꭺnd սnlike Anghony Albanese’ѕ current slide іn the polls leading uр to an lection iin neⲭt уear, the prospects bacҝ
in 2007 wеre rosy fⲟr Labor.

Тhe elecftion that ԝas looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide tһat woսld ѕee Kevin Rudd
Ƅecome ⲣrime minister аnd John Howard lose hiѕ ownn
    seat.

The issue ѡhich blew оpen the ‘guilty secret’ օf the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t abߋut
a prime minister’ѕ privileges, ɑlthough Johhn Howard
аnd Kevin Rudd were certainly oth members during thwir terms ɑs PM.

But when broadcaster Steve Ρrice – himself ɑ ⅼong time Chairman’ѕ Lounge membeг
    – revealed а politically charged remark mɑde within thе club’s hallowed walls, tһе cat was out of the bag.

Ꭲhe politicaal revelation – a cߋmment by еx-rock star turneԀ senator Peter
Garrett tһat Labor would hange tһe policies it campaigned
onn if іt won government – ԁid not deter his party fгom romping
    іn on election day.

In contrast, tһе scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese ɑbout hіѕ Chairman’s Lounge membership ɑnd thɑt of һis ex-wife
Carmel Tebbutt, аnd tһeir ѕon Nathan ϲould brіng ԁown the prime minister.

The exclusive Qantas Chairman’ѕ Lounge (аbove) hаs been a well-kеpt secret for
yеars, but it exploded into thе public conscience іn 2007 аs the result οff a political furore

Broadcaster Steve Ꮲrice revealed һе haⅾ been a Chairman’s Loune member since 2002 during a row befߋre the 2007 election won bу Kevin Rudd whiсh let
thе cat out off the bag about the VIP club

Thee existence оf tһe lounge waѕ so lіttle known baϲk
in 2007 that in defendinhg his disclosure оf Garrett’s remark, Steve
Ρrice һad tto explain whаt tһe private enclave actuaⅼly waѕ.

In a fiгst person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’ѕ
Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge awаy from the crowded normal Qantas Club.

‘Αs іts name implies, tһe people given access tօ іt are approved by tһe Qantas
    chairman, Margaret Jackson.

    ‘Ӏ have bеen a Chairman’ѕ Lounge member ѕince 2002.’

Іn һiѕ opinion piece, Ⲣrice also revaled TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins
ѡɑs alѕo a member οf lounge.

Wilkins һad aⅼsо bеen inside at the time and wass
his onlʏ witness too the remark Ⲣrice said Garrett hɑd made.

Ⲟther prominent media figures, ѕuch ɑs 60 Ⅿinutes reporters,
actors and performers, аnd well-known writers and
ports people ɑre saiԁ to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership oof aгound
    6000.

Price went oon tо defend himself foг reporting what sⲟme claimed ѡas a confidential conversation in a
private place, Ьut which exposed him tto criticism οver һis own membership foг allegedly prooting Qantas оn һis
    radio ѕhow.

Bаck in 2007, Alan Joyce (left) wаs boss of the compaatively lowly
budget airline Jetstar, аnd tһen Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon (rіght)
hɑd tһe power oνer ᴡho mɑde tһe cut to the Chairman’ѕ Lounge

Onee observer hhas desϲribed tһe relationship bet6ween leading politicians ѕuch as
PM Anrhony Albanese ɑnd thе former Qantas CEO Alaan Joyce (ɑbove) as ‘alarmingly
    cosy’

‘Ꮤhy on earth is Qantas gіving a controversial shock jock
membership ߋf its Chairman’s Lounge, ᴡhich іs supposedly tο enable oour elite politicians аnd
business leaders ѕome privacy frm tһe hoi polloi?’
demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne аt thе time.

‘The Chairman’ѕ Lounge is meant to be aⅼl about discretion andd confidentiality,’ һе saіd,
accusing Price of breaking ‘ɑ confidence’.

The folⅼowing yeаr, ƅefore hhe wаs succeeded aѕ Qantas CEO by
Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon ԝаs tһe sole gatekeeper oof entry inmto
    tһe club’ѕ hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’ѕ Lounge membership ѡаѕ ‘ѕo exclusive that yoս һave to be personally invited Ƅy the airline’s chieftain’,
    Nine newspapers гeported in 2008.

‘A marvellous benefit οf lounge membership іs that the mega rich and
powerful avoiԀ һaving to mingle ᴡith the riffraff wһo will ƅe travelling cattle
    class.

‘Ηaving said that, membeгs of the ultra-exclusive club һave included Pauline Hanson.

‘Αnother lounge membеr is Brad Cooper, who iѕ cuгrently enjoying a prolonged exposure tо cattle-class іn Kirkconnell Correctional
Centre.’ (Cooper ᴡas the formеr HIH insurance executive jailed fоr eight ʏears
    on fraud and bribery offences).

Membership ߋf thе elite lounmge is confined too aƄout 6000
Australians includig politicians fгom both sides,
senior public servants, TV stars ɑnd actors

Ƭһe ‘scandal’ currently engulfing Anthony Albanese аbout һis Chairman’s Lounge membership ɑnd that of һiѕ ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, andd tһeir sson Nathan ϲould ƅring ɗоwn the
prіme minister (abovethe ⲢM ѡith partner Jodie Haydon ɑnd ex-Qantas CEO Alan Joyce)

The report notеd that politicians declaring membership оf the lounge ‘ᴡhich mоst ᧐f
theіr spouses got tօo’ in theiг pecuniary
intereѕts tha ʏear includd Liberal MPs оf the Ԁay, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin aand
    Andrew Southcott.

Labor MPs ѡith lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek,
Bob McMullan, аnd Sharon Grierson, ɑnd Martin Ferguson declared a bottle οf Grange hermitage as a gift
fгom Qantas, aѕ did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

Askd if aⅼl MPs got the captain’s pick fгom Geoff Dixon, the
airline’ѕ spokesperson  toldd Ⲛine: ‘We liҝe tο retain a ƅіt of mystery. Membership is bʏ invitation ⲟnly and
    it іs reviewed periodically.’

Ϝast forward to today, and neɑrly every single
federal politician іn the country hаs accepted free membership ⲟf the controversial,
invitation-оnly lounge with one even describing іt as
    an ‘entitlement’.

Qantas and thee Albanese government гecently denied the ‘very, vеry high-end perk’ gives
the airline a disproportionate level οf influence ⲟver the country’s politicians.

Ƭhey were commenting ahead օf the launch ⲟf the new book The Chairman’ѕ Lounge bby
frmer Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, ѡhich has
    stirred uⲣ the controversy.

Α Daily Mail Australia audit ᧐f the members’ intеrest registers – іn bоth Federal Parliament’ѕ House of Representatives аnd the Senate – revealed ɑlmost
93 per cent ⲟf tһe nation’s leaderrs have
beеn ‘gifted’ membership t᧐ thhe lavish, aⅼl-inclusive lounge.

Μr Albanese haѕ defended himself by sayіng he declareed ɑll hhis benefits in pecuniary
    іnterest statements.

At a press conference tһіs week, he repeated that aⅼl
of his upgrades ‘havе been declared aѕ appropriate. What’s appropriate is

Aρart from thhe PᎷ, memberѕ include every one oof his 22-person Cabinet, hiѕ seven-person Outer

“Smile 2” lands as unsettling grins are plastered on pumpkins and politicians alike as we approach Halloween and
Election Day, and the psychotic, overly made-up leads of “Joker: Folie à Deux” have been putting up a brave face at their terrible box-office numbers.

So it’s the perfect time for a sequel to 2020’s “Smile,” which bridged the gap between elevated art horror
    and straight-out, unapologetic slasher. Finn
this time takes on fame, a better tonal fit than the generational trauma of the first.

It’s a meditation on breakdowns in the public eye, with a side dish of body horror.

We start six days after the last movie but they are
barely connected – a single character for a few minutes – as we watch a demon that forces its victims to smile
before meeting a gruesome end working its way into the low-level drug game.

The evil entity will eventually glom onto our heroine,
Skye, a fictional Grammy-winning pop superstar akin to if Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus had a baby.

We meet her a year after a horrific car crash she was
in that killed her famous boyfriend and left her with
a Vicodin addiction and rumors about whether she had anything to do with it.
That drug dealer has now infected Skye, but she has no idea what’s in store (or
in score, the terrific work of Cristobal Tapia de Veer).

On thing to really beam about is leading lady
Naomi Scott going for it all-out, all snot, smeared
blood and wide-eyed, full on-fear. Scott manages to pour her
humanity into the part – diva, whimpering, defiant, strung out,
panicked. She even sings on the soundtrack – songs that are credible hits.

The smile demon collides with Skye as she’s about to launch a comeback tour and
the pressure is on. Finn is at his best here, mocking confessional TV interviews – a Drew Barrymore cameo,
a nice touch – full of self-work and apologies: “I let you down and I promise this will never happen again.”
Her management demands that she show up “smile and read from the teleprompter.” Skye’s mom – on the
payroll – is little help: “You need to stay hydrated,” she tells her after
    Skye is clearly in torment.

Finn has become a much more assured filmmaker and uses humor so well here, from nasty gangsters enjoying pumpkin Frappuccinos to our heroine Googling “Does vomit have DNA?”
He’s still fond of jump-scares and blood spurting and gross-out tricks, like a body
dragged by a truck until it’s just a smear with entrails. One delightful moment has Skye chased by demonic backup dancers, a Bob Fosse-meets-“Thriller” sequence.

Finn also has a ball putting his heroines into cringe-worthy situations.
In the first movie, a murdered cat got bundled into a kid´s birthday
present. In this one, it’s a impromptu speech in front of music industry types that goes horrifically
off the rails. He’s got a deeper target: How do we quiet those voices in our
heads that say we’re no good?

Finn’s script sometime lags as he searches for an ending for “Smile 2,” seemingly in two minds, before basically
delivering both, kicking up dream sequences and alternate timelines like a squid
pumping out ink to cover its tracks. Over two hours ends up being too long.

But he has found a great satirical target, given life to
a third film easily and showcased another rising star to watch.

That’s a reason to, well, smile about.

“Smile 2,” a Paramount Pictures release that lands in movie theaters on Friday, is rated R for “strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use.” Running
time: 127 minutes. Three stars out of four.

  43. Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what looks like
a small sponge floating in murky water.

‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.

(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea
to make kombucha. I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous
thing takes weeks to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s
zip. At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly looks 20 years
younger. Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000
Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her
skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy, too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as
I, nine years her junior, have… well, deflated.

Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right, and Beatrice Aidin met
back in the 1990s when they were both beauty journalists

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks, morning to night, to see just how much I,
too, can turn back the clock.

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’ in a flower
bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my mouth
à la Liz. From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her
new book A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer,
Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller on its release this year.

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’
    she asks.

‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my
50s than I was in my 40s, so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’

Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the
breakdown of her second marriage, and the divorce she went through in 2020, she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both beauty journalists.

At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free
Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water. ‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she
    says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed…

and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and
    severe sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I have dark circles under my
eyes. Physical pain interferes with my sleep, and I’ve been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to help me
    nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I
    should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as
young as she looks? More to the point – can I really stick to it, kombucha and all?

‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…

Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the gym.

Beatrice needs extra help with exercise because of her sciatica

Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning
she’s a fan of lots of foods I love but didn’t think I should eat: butter, unprocessed meat,
avocados, good quality cheese, taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned
shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around
11am and dinner at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because
eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar
    levels stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated with living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee
    beans such as chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and mimics
an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which de-ages us at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or tequila, but never more than two and
    never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves
and start cooking from scratch. I grill venison,
roast a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the
protein part of each meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my
    carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.
Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew my own using
Liz’s Scoby. But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell.
When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something
I dislike so much, I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine has gone to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises
such as squats, lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the
long term than a high-intensity gym session once
a week or a long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that
running any distance over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.
If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time, not increasing your distance.

At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica, and then he
devises a daily regime for me. I try press-ups and make it to three.
Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly key. As are weights, especially in your 50s.

‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis,
    especially during midlife,’ says Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of
plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself,
    speeding up the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder
presses and hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands.
I try tricep dips off a chair, and quickly find I can increase
my reps – until by week four I’m doing two sets of 15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes 40 minutes
but the more I do, the faster I do it, until
the whole thing – stretching, press-ups, weights –
    takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete
with myself, speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel, which is sluggish and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences how our body uses oestrogen.
Put simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues around the body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies more effectively.

The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from veg, seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries and plums.

Back to the supermarket I go.

To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my
saintly mentor insists I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of
icy cold water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot
shower and feel not happy but mutinous as I step out of the bathroom shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and standing
barefoot on the grass. ‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of
the Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they have an anti-inflammatory
    effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.

I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas,
and feel, well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate to the park, and – look away now –
tread in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional
    wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.

‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune system,’ she says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to
smile about than me but, following instructions,
I write down three things I am grateful for every morning, and
every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day,
plus another (longer) list of ‘things that are concerning
    me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise
what’s important and what’s not. It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I thought.
Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find my journal and am surprised by how
    bereft I feel without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am…

    and occasionally edging towards 10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow her routine, which means
setting an evening alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed
book or a podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and
    stops eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she sleeps
with an open window, which she covers with blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with
a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a
regular alarm clock. The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray my pillows with C.
    Atherley Geranium Spray instead.

Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers the kombucha.

Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said to promote more restful sleep.

All of this is time-consuming and takes practise, but I
find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep
earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after
20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
    How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests
a glass of wine, which turns into a bottle. And then a second.

Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and find reduced
    dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for two months – you jab a
biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your
phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which
makes me tired and irritable. Who knew that such deliciousness had such
    a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in, eat too much
cake and drink too much tequila,’ she says. ‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it right.

It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what I
was so worried about day by day, my perspective on it changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the start
of this project and how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply nothing to be
    gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something
about it. Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for
part-time admin jobs. As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this before.
He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary
5 in off my waist and 11 in off my body as a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the measly 3kg weights are now
6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops
will be coming out again this party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s causing your aches

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely
    less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost
gone and I can come off strong painkillers. I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord,
but the timing is surely no coincidence. All
those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.

‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil.
‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably.
Though Liz is known for her candour, so it’s
not a given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough
and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one of the key lessons I’ve learned.
    Gratitude makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to love) and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold on to.

But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second
half – and if I can do it, anyone can.

disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics,
as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the
film following its release on Friday.

The ‘bleak’ sequel, has also received a tepid reception from
fans, with some claiming Lady Gaga’s career could
    be at risk.

While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the hot seat, critics have said the sequel is just
a ‘repeat’ of the first hit but with an added musical twist.

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and
claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live
up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’.

While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the hot seat, critics have said the sequel is
just a ‘repeat’ of the first hit but with an added musical twist

Joker: Folie à Deux premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival last month and was released in the United Kingdom and the United States on Friday.

The Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill.

Giving the sequel a four star rating, he wrote: ‘This
film is audaciously different in style from the original, not
as electrifying, but bold and brilliant all the
    same.

‘Arthur is now behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged
sane enough to stand trial for murder, and in the meantime
enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one
of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Joker: Folie a Deux is a punchline five years
in the making, writes BRIAN VINER

‘Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose,
to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.

The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes
it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker,
‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.

‘Which is more real: the psychopath wearing the
mask or the vulnerable fellow behind it? Either way, identity confusion is the
theme of this film, which keeps being billed as a
    musical.

‘It’s not, really, although music looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love
for one another. And there are a couple of swooning dance routines that make them look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone
    in La La Land (2016).

‘For me, Joker was a near-masterpiece, and while this sequel
doesn’t scale those heady heights, it is still a gripping film about mental illness; not quite
comparable with all-time greats such as Psycho (1960) and
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), but not too far off.’

dress on the red carpet at Academy Museum Gala in LA on Saturday.

For the star-studded affair located at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Rooney, 39, joined her dashing husband Joaquin, 49.

The couple – who ‘secretly wed’ recently – looked happier than ever as they posed
for sweet snaps on the carpet.

Rooney looked out of this world as she slipped into a floral sheer dress and flashed her underwear underneath.

The glitzy gala had no shortage of A-list star power as they were also joined by the likes of supermodel Kendall Jenner as
well as fan-favorite actress and newly minted billionaire
    Selena Gomez.

Rooney and Joaquin shared a sweet red carpet moment

Joaquin just confirmed Rooney (born Patricia) was his ‘wife’ during an episode of Sam Fragaso’s podcast Talk Easy, last month.

Mara welcomed their second child in June, and she dressed her post-baby body gorgeous sheer gown.

Phoenix (born Bottom) and the two-time Oscar nominee are also parents of four-year-old son River Mara Phoenix
named after Joaquin’s big brother who died, age 23, from
an overdose of morphine and cocaine on Halloween 1993.

‘I love it. I love it so much. I think it’s the best thing
in the world,’ Rooney gushed of motherhood on the LaunchLeft Podcast last year.

    ‘It doesn’t feel like a two-actor house because I didn’t
work for the first three and a half years we were together.

Basically since we’ve been together, I only worked one
or two times and one was really small and short.
It feels like a creative household, we’re constantly
    talking about creative things.’

The Phoenixes originally met in 2012 playing lovers Theodore Twombly and Catherine Klausen on the LA set of Spike
Jonze’s AI rom-com Her, but they didn’t start dating until after her 2016 split from her Discovery director Charlie McDowell.

The acting couple went on to co-star in Garth Davis’ 2018 Biblical drama Mary Magdalene and Gus Van Sant’s 2018 comedy Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.

Alex Lockwood’s 2022 pandemic documentary The End of Medicine and Jonah Hill’s 2022
    therapy documentary Stutz.

Mara told Deadline in February that she and Phoenix (born Bottom) are
still ‘all committed to’ co-starring in Pawel Pawlikowski’s upcoming
film The Island but ‘it doesn’t look like that will happen this year.’

But first, audiences can catch the New York native
as waitress Julia in Alonso Ruizpalacios’ Times Square kitchen drama La Cocina, which hits limited US
theaters October 25 and UK theaters December 26.

Meanwhile, the Grammy winner scored a $20M paycheck to reprise his Oscar-winning role as psychopathic
comedian Arthur Fleck/Joker in Todd Phillips’ $190M-budget
sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, which hits US/UK theaters this Friday.

Deadline projected the 138-minute demented jukebox musical to earn $140M worldwide opening weekend including $55M-$60M at 4K US theaters.

It also features Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.

Thus far, Joker: Folie à Deux has a 60% critic approval rating (out of 58 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 1981-set first film Joker made history in 2019 as the highest-grossing R-rated film
of all time, amassing $1.079B at the global box office despite mixed reviews.

Because in Africa…Blacks and Whites were separated.
Whites had more power than Blacks…in the Springboks team then, there
was only white players. Ofcourse some people didn’t
    like this and protested.

Look it up on Wikipedia…Stupid -_- I learnt this when I was
    10…how old are you?

  48. Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur
Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with
what looks like a small sponge floating in murky water.

‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.

(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha.
I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes weeks to develop and is in fact
    a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me
Liz’s zip. At 61, a mother of five and a new
grandmother, she honestly looks 20 years younger.

Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram
followers will know how bright and smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing
    with energy, too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as
I, nine years her junior, have… well, deflated.

Beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, right, and Beatrice
Aidin met back in the 1990s when they were both
    beauty journalists

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight
weeks, morning to night, to see just how much I, too, can turn back the clock.

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’ in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her,
and even tape up my mouth à la Liz. From my gut to my hormones,
my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book
A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller on its
    release this year.

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.

‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I was in my 40s, so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s, 70s and beyond?’

Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash
of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of her second marriage, and the divorce she went through in 2020,
she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both beauty journalists.
At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free
Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water. ‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my
    yang,’ she says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a
not-unrelated financial crisis and severe sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and I
have dark circles under my eyes. Physical pain interferes with
my sleep, and I’ve been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc
    to help me nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m
a good 10lb heavier than I should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel
as young as she looks? More to the point – can I really stick to it,
    kombucha and all?

‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…

Liz (left) puts Beatrice through her paces in the gym.
Beatrice needs extra help with exercise because of
    her sciatica

Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning she’s a fan of
lots of foods I love but didn’t think I should eat: butter,
unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality cheese, taramasalata and thick Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape,
and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch
around 11am and dinner at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of
chicken before rice, because eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show
four to five cups is ‘strongly associated with living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such as
    chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake of spermidine – a dietary molecule that
interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy,
which de-ages us at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or tequila, but never more than two and never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and start cooking from scratch.
I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the protein part of each meal first means I’m
fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented
foods. Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew my own using Liz’s
Scoby. But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell.

When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike
so much, I reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine has gone
    to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats,
lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the long term than a high-intensity gym
session once a week or a long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who
delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance
over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.
If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time, not
    increasing your distance.

At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica,
and then he devises a daily regime for me. I try press-ups
and make it to three. Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly
key. As are weights, especially in your 50s.
‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from
osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands.

I try tricep dips off a chair, and quickly find I can increase my reps – until by
week four I’m doing two sets of 15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the
routine takes 40 minutes but the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole
thing – stretching, press-ups, weights – takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself,
    speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I
feel, which is sluggish and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the
specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences how our body uses oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes improve
the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues
around the body, meaning we use our dwindling supplies more effectively.

The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating fibre from
veg, seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits
such as apples, berries and plums. Back to the supermarket I go.

To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly
mentor insists I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast of icy cold
water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot shower and feel not happy but mutinous
as I step out of the bathroom shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing
in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass. ‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of the
Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where
    they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.
I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas, and feel,
well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate to the park, and – look away now – tread
in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.
‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune system,’
    she says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to smile about than me but,
following instructions, I write down three things I am grateful for every morning, and every night a short list
of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another (longer) list
of ‘things that are concerning me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts
as I find it does make me realise what’s important and what’s not.
It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I thought.
Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find my journal and
am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and
end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am… and occasionally edging
    towards 10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they follow
her routine, which means setting an evening alarm for 9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed book or a podcast.

She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour
before bed (and stops eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she sleeps with an open window, which she covers with blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles
her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this
routine. Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock.

Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep earlier than I have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking at 7.30am.
    How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend who chirpily suggests a glass of wine, which turns into a bottle.
And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner.

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289
for two months – you jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic
bottle top into your upper arm, and then link
it to an app on your phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which makes me tired and irritable.
Who knew that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in, eat too much cake
and drink too much tequila,’ she says. ‘But that’s fine because you then know what to
do to put it right. It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what I was
so worried about day by day, my perspective on it changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt
at the start of this project and how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply
nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic,
I’m going to do something about it. Buoyed with the confidence
that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have
done this before. He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary 5
in off my waist and 11 in off my body as a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the measly 3kg weights are now
6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition.
The sleeveless tops will be coming out again this party season.

Our essential guide to beating back pain: What’s causing your aches

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because
I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat. I’m sleeping better and feeling
    infinitely less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica
is almost gone and I can come off strong painkillers.

I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord,
but the timing is surely no coincidence. All
those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my
spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.
‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil.
‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem
more content and optimistic. You have an inner glow
    and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably. Though Liz is known for her candour,
so it’s not a given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one of the key lessons I’ve learned.
    Gratitude makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have learned to
love) and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold on to.
But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower
    beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it, anyone can.

  49. Adam Bandt said people ‘can make their own judgment’ about him enjoying an exclusive and discretionary
perk from Qantas during a tense exchange
with a journalist live on radio.

The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the Qantas Chairman’s
Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas and
services handed out by the airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.

Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free
hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds
    of workers’.

Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people
can make their own judgement about what they think about that.’

Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case
    brought by Transport Workers Union.

Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for
thousands of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook
post. ‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.

Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think you should be a little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’

Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

How Greens leader Adam Bandt spent thousands on private jet flights while lecturing YOU about climate change

Mr Bandt was spotted in September flying
business class from Melbourne to Canberra seated next to Senator Jacqui Lambie.

Albanese government ministers Tim Watts and Catherine King were on the same flight but were with the masses in economy class.

It has been previously reported that Mr Bandt opts to
frequently fly business despite his party’s core policy of cutting C02 emissions.

Flying business class emits about three times as much carbon as economy class because the seats take up
more room and more of them are empty, according to a World Bank study.

Fellow Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather last year said he had shunned
a Chairman’s Lounge membership and refuses to travel business class.

Earlier this year Mr Bandt’s flying habits led to controversy.

Mr Bandt’s flying habits have been a previous source of controversy after it
was revealed he frequently opts for business class and has even taken private jets to election events

Mr Bandt used two private jets during the 2022 federal election campaign,
landing tax payers with the $23,000 bill.

One flight was between Queensland regional centres Townsville and Rockhampton on March 7 but he also boarded a
$15,000 private plane along the well-travelled Brisbane to Canberra route
to attend his party’s election campaign launch.

Mr Bandt isn’t the only politician in the hot seat with Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese being asked if he has included both his son and partner as ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Club
    members.

He is also being asked about free flight upgrades including an international one he is alleged to have
received from Qantas in new book The Chairman’s Lounge authored
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.

The Greens are licking their electoral wounds
after the Queensland state poll, where they are battling to hold onto their two seats after stating they aimed to
    triple their representation in parliament.

With 72 per cent of the vote counted they appear to
have retained the Brisbane seat of Maiwar but suffered a
4.6 per cent swing to the ALP.

However, they remain behind South Brisbane, which has
seen a massive 12.4 per cent swing to Labor with 64 per cent of votes counted.

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by
the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a
    distinct black card.

Australians have discovered an unlikely pop-up store offering shoppers ‘incredible’ deals on clothing, homewares, food, and electronics.

The temporary Vinnies locations have been set up around
Victoria to help shoppers get through the cost of living crisis ravaging the country.

Vinnies, or the St Vincent de Paul Society, is a charity
that works to provide support and assistance to people in need.

Most items are brand new stock donated by corporate partners including Christmas decorations.

Popular bargains include $10 large jars of Biscoff, $2 bags
of Red Rock Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros.

Shoppers will find men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes from top brands, and even electrical goods at the Vinnies pop-up locations.

Many have purchased vacuums, air fryers, Adidas shoes, printers, and kitchen knives from previous
    pop-up shops.

There is presently a location in Ascot Vale which is open until 3 November, and another in Boronia which
will remain open until Christmas – or until stock runs out.

Deli chips, and discounted shoes from Boston Bros

A new store will open in Richmond at Dimmey’s on 7 November.

The themed Richmond location will focus on goods for Christmas, summer, and the holiday season – but it will
also include household items, Bric-à-brac, and electrical items.

Shoppers have shared their thoughts on the pop-up locations online.

‘They have all the trending products – it’s so awesome,’ one said.

‘I bought a hair dryer from Vinnies and I’m obsessed with it,’
    another wrote.

‘I always have such good luck at Vinnies, I have to go,’ a woman added.

For those interested in the finer things, shoppers have discovered a ‘hidden gem’
discount retailer where you can find designer buys from brands like Fendi,
Dior, and Aje for affordable prices.

TK Maxx – which has stores in New South Wales, Victoria,
Queensland and South Australia – is the answer to buying
new clothes and shoes on a budget.

TK Maxx has stores in New South Wales , Victoria, Queensland and South Australia

Beth Zazlan, from Queensland, recently found a
gold mine of clothing lines from Australian brands like Camilla and
Marc, Acler, Bec+Bridge, Shona Joy, Dion Lee, Zimmerman, and Acler.

‘I was there for a pillow but I ended up grabbing some sparkly earrings from [American jewellery brand] Badgley Mischka,
    ‘ Beth told FEMAIL.

TK Maxx sells old stock from previous seasons – and shoppers have described it as
    a ‘clearance treasure hunt’.

Many have seen bags from Fendi, Dior, and Bottega Venetta on sale.

Others have spotted Gucci and Versace sunglasses, Hugo Boss accessories, and Christopher
    Esber dresses.

Beth said, ‘I was truly blown away – so if you’re looking
    for a bargain, head there.’

A David Jones employee revealed in a comment that discounted items from stores
that aren’t sold are shipped to TK Maxx.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market,
citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.

The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia
in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the
    year in Russia.

It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use with its IQOS ILUMA devices,
as well as related investment of $150 million.

Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended
its planned investments and decided to scale down manufacturing operations
    in the country.

Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to
a local third party, joining BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country.

  58. Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of
fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the sequel to
    Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the lead role
of The Joker/Arthur Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic
box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half
    that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its
cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie
cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the
first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to
be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and
fully committed to the storytelling they presented. It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the
first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number
of fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of the sequel to Todd
Phillips’ 2019 motion picture, starring Joaquin Phoenix

One user marveled that Joker 2 is ‘getting universal hate despite being more interesting
and creative than anything marvel has done in years is expected.’

A user said that ‘Joker 2 is genuinely such a clever movie which carries the
character study format of the first movie into the second in a way
which, surprisingly, will floor you by the end. I’m astounded reception is this bad because this is SUCH a
    clever movie’

Some users said that the bad word-of-mouth the film was suffering from was impacting the opinions of moviegoers.

‘The Joker 2 hate is so forced like did we watched the same movie????????’ one user said,
while another said the hate for the film is ‘so unjustified.’

One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand the test of time with audiences.

‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely liked the Joker 2.
Remember me when society circles back to it in 10 years and says its a masterpiece,’
said the user. ‘The world just wasn’t ready for it yet.’

Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. If you don’t like musicals or ‘art
house’ style films you probably won’t like it because it’s not made for you.
The dynamic between Harley and Joker was brilliant and
showcased the ‘obsession’ that is key to that
    duo.’

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering: How did
the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative team
go wrong? Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut,
which would still have been down a fair amount from
    Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

A number of fans took to social media to defend the controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and
its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a
musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the
    franchise

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where
it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got
    a 12-minute standing ovation.

But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks
with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33
percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more
surprising were the audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled
on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would
    be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though
reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others
have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.

About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX
    screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also
    open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild
Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly
    $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100
    million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal
and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped
with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s
start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the
    box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired
to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film. The
sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a
Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song
and dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released
a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the
advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said. ‘But
except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with
the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a
musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether
it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet
people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three
wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this
summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the
    crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.

and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released
    Monday.

  59. What do pop star Lily Allen, Olympic gold medal-winning diver Jack Laugher, tennis player Nick
Kyrgios and 25-year-old Bonnie Blue from Nottingham, who has filmed herself having sex with hundreds of
18-year-old students (and sometimes their dads,
    too), all have in common?

Yes, you guessed it. They are all ‘creatives’ on OnlyFans, the adults-only online content provider founded in 2016 by a young
Essex businessman called Tim Stokely, which is now one of the most visited
(and lucrative) websites in the world.

Just last month, Lily Allen caused a stir by revealing that she makes more money charging $10 (£8) –
the site works in dollars – for pictures of her feet on her
OnlyFans account labelled ‘La Dolca Feeta’
than she does from her 7.5million monthly listeners on Spotify.

But Lily’s content is tame in comparison to much of the content on the site,
the sort company execs refer to as ‘spicy’.

Everything from cheeky shots of bottoms peeking out of bubble baths, blondes stirring vats of steaming pasta in G-strings,
hot men waxing cars in their pants, right through the sex spectrum to twosomes,
threesomes, sixsomes and hardcore pornographic videos.

But also because, thanks to the allure of OnlyFans and the
astonishing sums that a teeny number of the platform’s 4.1million creatives are raking in, more and more young women (and it is mostly young women)
who would never have considered it before are suddenly happy to join in and sell photos of, well, pretty much anything, to
pay rent, settle credit card bills or splash out on nice holidays.
Basically, a flashier life all round.

‘We feel empowered. We have agency. It’s completely up to me
if I take my top off or not,’ says one 21-year-old girl, who joined a year ago and makes
enough in a week to cover a year’s student rent at Sheffield University and prefers not to
    give her name.

‘And I am happy to do it because for once I make the rules, in the safety of my home
and they’re paying me to do it. It’s a mug’s game, but I am not the mug.’

For the benefit of those readers who are not among the site’s 305million users, OnlyFans offers creators a
platform where they can charge their fans a subscription fee ranging from $4.99 to $49.99 a month to look at their content,
contact them (or more often access their ‘chatter’ – more of which later) and access often more explicit, personalised, ‘à la carte’
    content through ‘tips’.

OnlyFans model Bonnie Blue has filmed herself having sex with hundreds
    of 18-year-olds

Rapper Cardi B is said to make $9million (£7.1million) a month from the site

Actress Bella Thorne, a former Disney child star,
    made a record-breaking $1million (£800,000) in 24 hours

‘Pay $10 to unlock this video’. ‘Click here for more spicy content’.
‘The more you pay, the more you see’. You get the gist.

In 2023, the site generated a record $6.6billion (£5.2billion), of which the company takes a straight 20 per cent – much less than YouTube – and the rest goes to the ‘performers’.

It is unlike Instagram or other social media sites in that nothing is suggested – instead, you have to search for, and then subscribe to,
individual accounts to see much more than profile pictures.

Which is a good thing, because while some of the content is anodyne,
much is highly sexual and many people on the site can bob freely
from one to another. Perhaps a cookery hack one day, modelling new
boots the next, then graduate to a few cheeky cleavage and
bikini shots and more, as the money becomes more tempting.

Every week, it seems, we hear of someone who has made millions.

Last month it was announced that American influencer Corinna Kopf had retired from the
    site, aged 28, after making $67million (£53million).
In her best month, she reportedly earned more than $2million (£1.6million).

Rapper Cardi B is said to earn more than $9million (£7.1million) a month from the site.

Meanwhile, Darcie Rattles was an out-of-work
bricklayer with £6,000 in credit card bills and debts when she joined OnlyFans in 2022.

‘I was thinking: how the hell am I going to get to next week?
How am I going to pay my credit cards?’ she says
in an online interview. ‘I’m young, I’ve got a good body and I’ve got a lot of followers.

It is what any girl would turn to. It had been in the back of mind for two years,
    but then I did it.’

Within two days of launching, she had earned enough to pay off her debts.
Today, Darcie, who comes across as likeable, down-to-earth and has no qualms about
what she shares, claims to earn more than £250,000 a year.

Pop singer Lily Allen has discovered a niche market…

… she sells pictures of her feet for £8 and makes more money from her account labelled ‘La Dolca Feeta’ than she does from her 7.5million monthly listeners on Spotify

‘It doesn’t matter to me whether I get my feet out,
or my other bits out,’ she says.

Though it does tend to be the other bits, because Darcie’s content promises very few clothes and, for those
who pay extra, ‘a naughty side to me you’ve never seen before’.

But even Darcie seems like the girl next door compared
to Lily Phillips, a British model who earned £2,000 in her
first 24 hours on the site and recently went viral for
sleeping with 101 men over a 14-hour period.

She has since announced she is planning to set a record of having sex with 1,000 men in 24 hours.

And Bonnie Blue, a beautiful blonde with a golden tan and astonishingly white teeth,
who has worked her way round Derby, Nottingham, Cancun and Australia,
    sleeping with university students.

On one night during Nottingham Trent freshers’ week – after publicising her stunt by wearing a sandwich board that read: ‘Bonk me for free and let
me film it’ – she had boys queuing up from 6pm until five in the morning.

‘I got through them all,’ she said proudly in one interview in which she reminds us that,
thanks to OnlyFans, she has already banked more
than £3 million – for which she was applauded by
    her followers for her entrepreneurship.

But all that is chicken feed when you consider the £370 million dividend that company owner paid
    himself last year.

And these days that’s Leonid Radvinsky, who bought a majority
stake from Tim Stokely in 2018, two years after he started the business with the help of a loan from his father.

It was the Covid-era lockdowns that thrust OnlyFans into the stratosphere.
Everyone shut up at home, nothing to do. In 2020, it generated
    revenues of $2.23billion (£1.8billion). By 2021, it was up to $4.8billion (£3.8billion).
There was a brief hiatus in October of that year when they tried banning sexually explicit content
but that lasted about ten minutes before they switched back.

There have been plenty of scandals along the way.
A BBC investigation back in 2021 revealed that children were not just accessing the material online
by foxing the age verification process but were also
selling explicit videos on the website. Leah, 17,
had used a fake driving licence to set up an OnlyFans account where she
made £5,000 uploading revealing videos of herself.

There have also been claims of OnlyFans creators using public gyms and spaces to make adult content.

Recently there has been more concerns that the company is not doing enough
    to protect minors.

OnlyFans, however, prefers to portray itself as a force for good, with supporters arguing that it
empowers people by allowing them to sell content –
over which they have full control – directly to consumers.
And many of the Gen Z generation seem to agree. ‘It’s fine.
It’s empowering. It’s taking control,’ they cry, pointing out that the site has loads of moderators and a tight
security system to ensure that all users are over 18.

And they say, anyway, that OnlyFans isn’t just about sex.

Of course, they’re right. It has long been awash with pneumatic reality TV stars and the likes of Lottie Moss,
Kerry Katona and Katie Price, who are happy to tease their followers with a few cheeky peeks
    in skimpy bikinis.

I spend an afternoon browsing the site and,
while it is not all ‘spicy’ content as the company executives like
to call it, everything is dripping with sauce and promise.

The big lips, the push-up bras, even the way a pretty Spanish chef
is holding her paella pan. Company executives have been pushing
hard to make the platform more mainstream – offering contracts and financial
incentives to encourage musicians, sports stars, cooks, anyone really, to
come on and share a bit of exclusive – or niche – content.

Really, anything that people will pay to look at – glimpses
backstage at concerts. Celebrities in the bath.

During the 2024 Olympic Games, a raft of athletes jumped on the OnlyFans bandwagon to share pictures of their beautifully toned bodies.

Along with Jack Laugher, Team NZ rower Robbie Manson uses
the site to share ‘exclusive content that tastefully explores the boundaries, including artistic portrayals of nudity’
for $14.99 a month. British speedskater

Olympic diver Jack Laugher is among a number of
    sports stars using OnlyFans

Reality TV star Kerry Katona has also teased followers with content

Lottie Moss  has also taken to the adults-only online content provider that
was founded in 2016 and is used by 4.1 million creatives

Elise Christie turned to the site when she found herself in financial difficulties.

All of which seems to be working well for them, but it can be rather murkier
    for others.

Not least because, in less than a decade, OnlyFans has spawned an entire support industry of ‘sugar daddies’ who support performers financially and ‘chatters’ who work for them.
‘Sugar daddies’ tend to be older male businessmen who ‘invest’ in promising creatives.
In what are referred to rather murkily as ‘mutually
beneficial deals’, they invest in branding and marketing and videography to boost traffic.

Chatters are different. For the real stars, the traffic is so high and the interaction with followers so demanding that if they had to
do it all themselves, there’s no way they would ever have time to put their pyjamas back on.

So ‘chatters’ – a sort of online 21st-century Cyrano de Bergerac – do that for them.

Keeping them engaged, online, needy and most of all, spending, spending,
spending for more and more content.

Which means, of course, that the whole thing is a total scam.
The poor daft subscriber thinks he’s really making a connection with ‘Racy Tracey from Twickenham’,
but is more likely chatting to a middle-aged father of three from the Philippines.

He will have learnt everything about Tracey – her favourite colour, favourite animal and favourite position – have studied a script that reminds
him ‘it’s all about selling, selling, selling’,
and will be being paid $4 an hour for his efforts.

Or the subscriber could just be talking to an AI bot – which perhaps is more
    appealing.

    EXCLUSIVE

A year after split, I’ve had a baby and got engaged, writes Mother Pukka ANNA WHITEHOUSE

Chatters can be dangerous. As Alanya, a paralegal from Scotland, discovered when she learned that one of her most enthusiastic followers had
travelled to her home town to find her, encouraged by her chatter.

‘My chatter told him that I loved him. I would
never, ever have said that,’ she said.

But, sadly, chatters, sugar daddies and stalkers are not a problem for most creatives.
Almost all of whom are still struggling to
make any proper money, however many clothes they take
    off.

They will never know the clout of Cardi B, or Lily Allen, or former Disney child star Bella Thorne, who famously made a record- breaking $1million (£800,
    000) in 24 hours when she joined in August 2020. (Though initially there was some confusion as to whether she would be appearing
nude or not. She did not – which caused quite a rumpus.)

Because, unlike celebrities who can redirect their existing social media
followers to their OnlyFans accounts, most people find it hard to grab attention without doing something, well, grabby.

So, despite all the tales of golden riches, the average earnings of an OnlyFans creative is still just $150 (£118) a month and, with
the market now so flooded, is only likely to go one way.

And it’s easy to see how, if you’re a young woman who
has convinced yourself that you’re in control,
empowered and mistress of your own destiny, you could find yourself moving inevitably and inexorably up (or perhaps down) the scale, revealing
    more and more.

Until, before you know it, like Bonnie Blue and Lily Phillips,
you’ve kept nothing back for yourself.

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power,
    was marred by technical problems.

Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where
Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and
labelled a “sham” by the opposition.

Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence
    from South africa.

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues
with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.

In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and
mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues, it said.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral
commission extended the vote for a second time, giving
Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had
    exams the next day.

Des électeurs attendent l’ouverture d’un bureau de vote à
Windhoek, le 29 novembre 2024 en Namibie

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said.
But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”

The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties with
some calling for a halt in the electoral process.

Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday
and issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus
who represents the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.

Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after
independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which has ruled
    since 1990.

Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the first woman to lead the country if elected, could
face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.

“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund, who also said he
couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite trying four
    different polling stations.

“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the
    49-year-old security agent.

“It was to get people frustrated.”

The Australian government has issued a stern warning to horror fans flocking to cinemas to see the ultra-violent slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about
its extreme content and disturbing themes.

The film, directed by Damien Leone, has drawn huge crowds since it’s release
on October 10, as it continues the blood-soaked saga of Art the
Clown with more gruesome, stomach-churning scenes.

The movie has broken box office records as horror enthusiasts are
lured in by the film’s reputation for intense violence and shock value.

    The Department of Infrastructure, Transport,
Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts has warned Australian audiences to prepare for scenes of graphic violence, dismemberment and
disturbing themes that go well beyond typical horror fare.

The film includes brutal depictions of murder using a variety of weapons, from
chainsaws to axes and guns, resulting in explicit injury
detail and copious amounts of blood.

The warning also highlights that the movie portrays self-harm,
cannibalism, animal cruelty and violence involving children, pushing
the boundaries of what the most hardened horror fans has seen before.

One of the film’s more controversial moments includes a
scene of implied masturbation coupled with self-harm,
along with a shower scene that hints at sexual activity.

The Australian government has issued a stern warning to horror fans flocking to cinemas to see the ultra-violent slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about its extreme content and disturbing themes

The film, directed by Damien Leone, has drawn huge
crowds since it’s release on October 10, as it continues the blood-soaked saga of
Art the Clown with more gruesome, stomach-churning scenes

In addition, male genital nudity and obscured shots of female breast and buttock nudity have caused concern among viewers
    and the classification board alike.

The film’s R18+ rating in Australia is due to its high impact violence,
blood, gore and explicit sexual content.

Despite these warnings, audiences have turned out in droves.

The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts has
warned Australian audiences to prepare for scenes of graphic violence, dismemberment and disturbing themes that go well
    beyond typical horror fare

Many cinema-goers in Sydney and Melbourne reportedly clapped and cheered
during some of the film’s most grotesque death scenes.

This latest instalment of the Terrifier franchise is a continuation of the sadistic horror unleashed by
Art the Clown, a character who has now become a modern horror icon for
    his relentless brutality.

In Terrifier 3, Art’s reign of terror continues, once again targeting Sienna Shaw who narrowly survived his attacks
    in the previous movie.

Sienna, portrayed by actress Lauren LaVera, takes on Art in a deadly showdown that is as gory as it is horrifying, featuring scenes of decapitations, dismemberments and visceral body horror.

‘Traumatising’ horror sequel leaves two Perth moviegoers
    unconscious and one injured

The Terrifier franchise, which began in 2016, quickly gained a cult following due to its extreme violence and over-the-top death scenes.

The first film, which saw Art the Clown mutilate a
victim with a hacksaw, shocked audiences with its brutal kill sequences.

The sequel, Terrifier 2, went viral last year after
reports emerged that viewers were fainting and vomiting in cinemas due to
    its graphic content.

Now, with Terrifier 3, Leone has doubled down on the carnage, taking the
    gore to new, unsettling levels.

Despite Australia’s strict film censorship laws, Terrifier 3
was approved for theatrical release with a strong warning attached.

The film’s notoriety has only heightened its appeal to horror fans,
who continue to fill cinemas across the country.

Earlier this month, two people fainted and fled for the exit when it hit a Perth cinema for early previews.

According to multiple eye witness accounts, one
young woman badly injured herself after she fell down the cinema stairs while fleeing the movie theatre.

‘This is going to sound made up and I promise you it’s not,’ Australian horror film critic Emma Clarke began her
review of David Leone’s controversial new horror-slasher.

The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two people fainted right in front of her during the screening she attended at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over the weekend.

The first fainted during the opening scene, she said in her film review shared to YouTube, and the second nearer to the end
    of the two-house spectacle.

‘Can you tell me… why did two people feint right in front of me
    during that film?’ she said.

‘Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because they felt so
    queasy.’

The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both people and
tried to assist them because she was seated directly behind
    them.

The first was a man, who left with a friend who came to check on him, and second Australian victim was a young woman.

‘This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the
stairs, I felt so bad for her. I went and checked on her afterwards,’ Clarke claimed.

‘She did get help. She was with her friend. It really shook me up too.
It actually took me out of the film for the moment.’

The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies for the past four years, said she has never seen audience members have such a visceral reaction to a film.

Many cinema-goers in Sydney and Melbourne
reportedly clapped and cheered during some of the film’s most
    grotesque death scenes

Clarke described the third installment of Leone’s series — which is set
to open nationally on Thursday, October 11 — as ‘ fun, intense, gory, disturbed, and
    over the top.’

‘I’m not used to horror actually hurting people, so that was a really strange experience,’
    she said.

‘Before anyone says they’re paid actors, I saw the girl
and she had injuries. They were both very young people. I feel really awful about it to be honest.’

‘It was a very scary moment trying to help them out.’

Briton Matthew Smith, the partner of former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Michael Jeffries, leaves court
in Central Islip, New York on December 3, 2024

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges
of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10
    million bond.

Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and
their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a
“casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims
were plied with alcohol and drugs.

After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith
was held in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central
Islip on Long Island, to the east of New York City.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New
    York.

An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what
appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith, Jeffries
    and Jacobson.

Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late
    October.

Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to
2014, is accused of creating and maintaining a ring that recruited young men to have sex with him and Smith.

Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and
March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion” to traffic men in a
    sprawling prostitution enterprise.

Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest
the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.

Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home
of Jeffries and Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.

Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.

Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges
as the other defendants and was released on half a million dollars bond in October.

  80. Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online,
in newspapers and on TV and radio.

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The
Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry,
Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line
    to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s
then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese
got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas
trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the
messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.

He said Aston was using the accusations to
sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.

    ‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former
Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of
Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior
    adviser.

for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of
    Cook before Scott Morrison.

‘My professional history is not a secret or
not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before
    his book launch.

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims
about him the Prime Minister made.

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many
times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see
their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that
    they create,’ he said.

Extravagant Qantas perk Anthony Albanese FAILED to declare is revealed…
    after two days of denials

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to
    advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades
    (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you
ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you
were the Transport Minister? The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying
    it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to
pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has
led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

Anthony Albanese is pictured on August 14, 2023 as Qantas unveiled its Yes23
livery in support of a Yes vote in the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum

Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book launch in the ritzy
Hemmesphere club in Sydney was Tabcorp director David
    Gallop (pictured)

Paul Barry (pictured in blue shirt), the host of the ABC’s Media Watch show, was also at the launch

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone
who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
    This book is about Qantas.

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name
it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a scalp.
That’s not what this book is about and it never
    was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and
eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with
the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

Guests at Joe Aston’s book launch on Tuesday night are pictured pointing for emphasis or to someone
    they recognise

    of Joe Aston’s book

Joe Aston is pictured in the exclusive Hemmesphere club in Sydney, where his book
    The Chairman’s Lounge was launched

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of
behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the
front row of the Australian Open Tennis.

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw
    there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.

He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel
to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline
and asks if their flight can be upgraded.

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’
    Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s
in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes,
    you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the
ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.

You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat
and the only person at Qantas who can issue those
types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive
    can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes
during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for
    politicians to get up there.

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very
    hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t
    get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Qantas for comment.

The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out, by Joe Aston, is available now in bookshops and from online retailers

WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S LOUNGE?

The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.

It has been dubbed ‘the most exclusive club in the country’ and comes with a distinct black card.

Members include senior-ranking MPs such as ministers, state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.

The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide airports but are not signposted – you have to know where to look.

Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool carpet and marble flooring, all bathed in natural light.

Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines. Wine bottles are often given as departing gifts.

Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.

Members may bring in two guests at a time.

Lounge attendants personally alert you when your flight is ready to board, and your personal preferences are logged for each flight.

Membership also entitles you to first-class facilities at Qantas partner airlines.
