Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie à Deux, a number of
fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense
of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive
movie would be a solid debut.’

released the film in 4,102 locations in North America. About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its total
global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and
China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot,
which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s
White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from
just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for
theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something
as ‘audacious’ as the first film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham
and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance
numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the
film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the
first movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a
‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem
to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel
a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted
to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people
still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing
R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

is releasing a single titled Disease, set to be released Friday.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country
following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from
Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year in Russia.

As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border
security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the
subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500
votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange
T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to
back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while
they’re at it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed
by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to
mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart
of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both
appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and
to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’
concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the
Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also
“moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening
on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.

Smile 2 and Terrifier 3 are set for a horror
box office showdown this weekend.
Terrifier 3 – made for just $2million – has become a surprise hit,
raking in $28.6million so far and knocking Joaquin Phoenix

July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed
the test-launch of its heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S.
to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual
forecast for the heated tobacco business.
The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the
second quarter, for which the company reported results on the day.
The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.
Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand
its portfolio of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.
The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also
facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.
The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by the second half
of 2025.
A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year,
with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.
This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco category to around
13% for the full year, down from between 14% and
16% expected earlier.
However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual sales and profit
forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well

the 83rd annual Golden Globe awards.

Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, was also left out of the
nominations, however his co-stars Cooper Koch (who starred as Erik Menendez) and Javier Bardem both garnered
nods.
Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice performance was also unable to cast a spell on the Golden Globe
decision makers, with the star failing to receive a
nod for the sequel.
The box office hit Deadpool & Wolverine also
failed to receive a nomination in the Best Motion Picture –
Musical or Comedy category, however it did earn a nod for Cinematic
and Box Office Achievement.
Jonathan Bailey from Wicked also did not receive a nomination.
The 82nd Golden Globes will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January 5, hosted by Nikki Glaser – the first woman to solo host the awards.
While Lopez, Streep, and others were snubbed
from the Golden Globes, a slew of other stars and projects did receive nods.
Nominations for the 2025 ceremony were announced Monday morning,
with Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both receiving nominations for their work in the
musical film.
Grande – earning her first ever Golden Globe nomination – features in the category for Best Supporting Female Actor – Motion Picture nomination courtesy of her role as Galinda Upland in the fantasy drama.

The versatile star will compete alongside close friend Selena Gomez for her role in Emilia Perez and
Margaret Qualley, who won universally positive reviews for body shock horror The Substance.
Isabella Rossellini also received a nomination for her role in Conclave, as does Zoe Saldana – again, for Emilia
Perez.
Elsewhere Demi Moore has been acknowledged for her starring role
alongside Qualley in The Substance, earning herself
nomination for Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy.
Also garnering a nod, Grande’s Wicked co-star Arivo has been richly rewarded for her role as
green-skinned witch-in-the-making Elphaba.
Jon M. Chu did not receive a directing nod for Wicked, however stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both did earn nominations

Best Television Actor in a Drama Series for his starring role in Netflix hit The

The actor faces stiff competition from Jake Gyllenhaal for Presumed Innocent, while
Donald Glover also wins a nomination for his role in Mr. & Mrs.
Smith.
There’s another British face on the list, with Gary Oldman’s starring role in Disney+ series
Slow Horses earning him a richly deserved nomination, while Hiroyuki
Sanada and Billy Bob Thornton win respective nods for Shōgun and Landman.
British Netflix drama Baby Reindeer has also been acknowledged, with the Richard Gadd
written show featuring in the category for Best Limited Series,
Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture and
its lead actress Jessica Gunning named as Best Supporting Female Actor – Television.
The show will compete alongside the hugely
popular Ripley, controversial biopic Monsters: The Lyle
And Erik Menendez Story, True Detective: Night Country, Ripley and The Penguin.
During the upcoming awards ceremony, Cheers legend Ted Danson will receive the
Carol Burnett Award for those who have “made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen” and Viola Davis
will be handed the Cecil B. DeMille Award for achievement in film.
