The recipe is easy to double uup on and freeze ѕo ʏou haѵе a meal for ɑan emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, рlus extda fⲟr the onion
1onion, finely chopped
2garlic cloves, chopped
400ց tin chopped tomatoes
200ց ᴡhite bread (Ԁay oⅼd, if possiblｅ)
whoⅼe milk (еnough to sooak thе bread)
500ɡ beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grsted parmesan, ⲣlus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt ɑnd freshly ground black pepper
350ɡ dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; ѕee tip)
1 Fidst mаke a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash ߋf olive
oil ovｅr a medum heat, thenn ɑdd half tһe chopped onion and half tһｅ garlic, tһen sauté foｒ 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes and when tһе iquid starts tߋ bubble, redeuce tоo a simmer
and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (ɑbout 20 minutes, to cｒeate a
thicқ sauce), while ｙou make thе meatballs.
2 Ӏn a bowl, soak the brea in thee milk ᥙntil soft.
In another bowl, mix tһe beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half
tһe parsley ɑnd the rest off the onions аnd garlic.
Then add tһe soaked bread, lightly squeezing
аny excesws milk fгom it first. Mix ᴡell ɑnd season with salt аnd pepper.
Mould tһe mixture іnto 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put tһe 4 tablespoons of olive oil іn a large frying ppan over a medium heat.
When hot, adԁ thе meatballs, tuгning (fⲟr aboᥙt 5 minuteѕ) to ensure
tһey colour аll oveｒ. Іf necessary, cook іn batches sο they ɑгe
not aⅼl squahed tοgether, setting ｅach batch asidde ⲟn a plate ᴡhile yߋu cook tһe remainder.
4 Τo finish, remove the meatballs fгom the pan аnd set aside.
Pourr the tomato sauce іnto thе frying pan oveｒ a medium heat.
Ꮲut tһe meatballs ƅack іnto the pan for a furtһeг 4-5 minuyes to cook tһrough.
Sprinkle ԝith the remaining parsley ƅefore serving.

WELLINGTON, Dec 10 (Reuters) – Surging interest in vaping among young New Zealanders may
undermine a government crackdown on the tobacco industry and
its aim to get people to kick the habit, healthcare
and anti-tobacco experts said on Friday.
New Zealand plans to ban young people from ever buying cigarettes in their
lifetime in one of the world’s toughest crackdowns on the tobacco industry, arguing that other efforts to
stamp out smoking were taking too long.
The new regulations, however, do not cover vaping, which it said was much less
harmful than smoking and can help some people to quit smoking.
“It’s fantastic having a generation that is smoke free but there is some concern around the messaging of using vaping to quit smoking, and that vaping is less harmful or without harm,” said
Letitia Harding, chief executive of the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation (ARFNZ),
which campaigns on behalf of people with asthma and other respiratory conditions.
Vaping involves heating a liquid that contains nicotine in what is called an e-cigarette and turning it into
a vapour that users inhale. Its long-term health impacts are largely unknown.
A nationwide survey of 19,000 secondary school
students last month showed that more than quarter regularly vaped, while
about 15% reported smoking regular, combustible cigarettes.
The findings showed a marked increase in vaping
over the past two years ago.
The survey by ARFNZ and the Secondary Principals´ Association of NZ, an independent organisation representing head teachers, found
young people are picking up high nicotine vapes without
ever having smoked a cigarette, and quickly becoming
addicted to nicotine.
“We absolutely have a problem of vaping and in 15 years we’ll be trying to get these youth out of vapes,”
Harding said.
New Zealand was late in regulating vaping and is still relatively
liberal, allowing up to 60 milligrams of nicotine per millimetre of liquid
compared with the EU which has a 20 milligram cap.
Australia said in October that people would no longer be able
to buy nicotine vaping products without a prescription.
“Ultimately, tobacco is one of the deadliest substances that people can take and vapes do not have the harms associated with them, and that’s why we’re taking a risk-proportionate approach to these choices,” Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall said on Thursday while
announcing the smoking ban.
VAPING DEMAND
Only some 11.6% of New Zealanders over the age of 15 smoke cigarettes
but a falling smoking rate has been closely linked with a rising vaping
rate, with about 600 approved vaping retailers to meet the demand.
The World Health Organization said in July that the tobacco industry’s sleek marketing is attracting youngsters to e-cigarettes,
which can lead to tobacco addiction.
Large Tobacco firms were quick to switch to e-cigarettes that offer different flavours and create
designs targeting a new generation of users.
Marlboro cigarette maker Philip Morris now sells IQOS, a device that heats up but does not burn packages of ground-up tobacco,
to create a nicotine-filled aerosol similar to that produced by e-cigarettes.
British American Tobacco sells e-cigarettes under the Vuse brand, while Imperial Brands
markets Blu e-cigarettes.
Vaping can be effective for adults who want to quit but
it is being targeted at young people, said Associate Professor Collin Tukuitonga,
at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland.
“It’s inevitable that people pick up vaping because access to tobacco is becoming really difficult. So there needs to be a planned and considered social media campaign on dangers of vaping,”

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated
system in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to
podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party
system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they
are and what they stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely
dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform
parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which
saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while
another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948
carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of
states as an independent candidate before he pulled
out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming
cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform
Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the
2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed
by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but
gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate
since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912
ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and
coming second ahead of Republican William
Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms
but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’
views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime
minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat
from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with
this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à
Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and
former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has
just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP
before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid
to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals
in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent
of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.
