#EndSARS: Here’s How Much Lagos Panel Awarded Late Kolade Johnson’s Family As Compensation

The Lagos judicial panel has awarded the sum of N10 million to the family of late Kolade Johnson.
Johnson was shot during a raid by police officers at Onipetesi area in Lagos, while watching an English premiership match between Tottenham and Manchester United on March 31, 2019.
The incident sparked outrage social media, after which the police authorities identified Ogunyemi Olalekan, a police inspector, and Godwin Orji, a sergeant, as the officers involved in the shooting.
Following an orderly trial, Olalekan was dismissed from the force after he was found guilty, while Orji was acquitted.
Doris Okuwobi, chairman of the Lagos panel, announced the compensation at the sitting on Friday. The award sum was received by the mother of the deceased. Thirteen petitioners — including Johnson’s family — were compensated with a total of N83 million at the sitting on Friday.

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute
all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he died,
a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him
by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison,
along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange
for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a
moment of doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding
hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages
remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to
their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed
there is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

fans flocking to cinemas to see the ultra-violent slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about its extreme content and disturbing themes.

The movie has broken box office records as horror enthusiasts are lured in by the film’s reputation for intense violence and

warned Australian audiences to prepare for scenes of graphic

The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two
people fainted right in front of her during the screening she attended at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over
the weekend.
The first fainted during the opening scene, she said in her
film review shared to YouTube, and the second nearer to the end of the two-house
spectacle.
‘Can you tell me… why did two people feint
right in front of me during that film?’ she said.
‘Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because they felt so queasy.’
The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both people and tried to assist them
because she was seated directly behind them.
The first was a man, who left with a friend who came to check on him, and second Australian victim was a young woman.
‘This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the
stairs, I felt so bad for her. I went and checked on her afterwards,’ Clarke claimed.
‘She did get help. She was with her friend. It really shook me up too.
It actually took me out of the film for the moment.’
The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies
for the past four years, said she has never seen audience members have such a visceral reaction to a
film.

Clarke described the third installment of Leone’s series —

she had injuries. They were both very young people. I feel really awful about it

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if
he died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli
prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange
for the return of kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat,
said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a
moment of doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding hostages that, should he be killed, they
should kill their hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained
in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their
families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of
State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is a slim chance of a deal
being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a
kill order on the hostages, he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care for them.
He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late August.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered by Hamas just
a short time before we got to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi,
24, Carmel Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25,
and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.
Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova
music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.
Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was captured.

‘In order to encourage them to do that, Israel should also be reaching out to Egypt and

months, but on a deal that would bring the hostages home quicker and
would obviously require Israel to end the war.’
He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge –
The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily
Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’,
but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights
Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot
the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was
hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former
Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate
communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal
MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just
before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he
said.

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay
their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this
part to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.
They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this
book is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations
being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr
Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a
long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him,
is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist
almost every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I
saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to
sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever
seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think
(the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be
booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,
‘ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get
upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and
you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the
only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the
CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony
Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians
to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to
go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all
these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and
they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford
to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal
travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Australian politicians are almost always opting to
fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to
the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the
most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded
trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight
upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing
bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece
for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight
bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two
months left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

in both the House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have
been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
The high profile ranks of government giftees include Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as every
member of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12
assistant ministers.
While most politicians declared their Qantas’ privileges as a
‘gift’, Labor MP Marion Scrymgour listed her membership as
her ‘Chairman Lounge entitlement’.
Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of Qantas’ exclusive Chairman’s Lounge.
And it’s not just politicians on the take, with more than 60 MPs – including Marles, Chalmers, King,
Bill Shorten, Zali Steggall and Tanya Plibersek – disclosing their spouses have also been granted unfettered, independent access to Qantas’ luxurious members only lounge.
Often touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’,
membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy.
Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent
VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth
airports – are suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and
a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points.
Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief executive and chairman.

ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and
there are many ways to serve them (see tip). The veal
in these gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful
pork mince. This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging
around. The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have
a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash
of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to
soften. Add the tomatoes and when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a
simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes,
to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.
Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes)
to ensure they colour all over. If necessary, cook in batches so
they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside
on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium
heat. Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes
to cook through. Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions until al dente.
Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if
necessary, and then transfer it back to the pan and toss
it with a little olive oil and butter. Put the spaghetti on a serving plate
and top with the meatballs and sauce. Finish with
a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

There are no diameters for squares; let us
just make that clear. Diameter only applies for circles (Line that goes through centre of circle and touches edges).
However, diameters in squares would be simply length(but
went through centre). Therefore it could be anywhere between 15-~21.2132.
(Straight length/width or diagonal or anywhere
else.)

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince

Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004 Grammy
Awards, performing a medley that included his iconic 1984
single Purple Rain.
Their duet also included her fan favorite number Crazy In Love, which saw him accompany her on the electric guitar.
Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his
appraisal of Beyonce’s musical abilities when they worked together.
‘I was really curious as to how much she knew musically,
and I was really pleased to find out that she knew a lot about scales –
Mixolydian scales and Egyptian styles and different things like that,’
he said.
‘And I was just trying to show her some chords on the piano and help her to respect
the fact that if she learns piano à la Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles and things like that, the sky’s the limit as to what

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack
on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to
him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his
book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a
direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO
Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22
flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to
Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to
shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I
don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page
there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate
communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,
‘ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’
at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and
leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the
terrible circumstances that they create,

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a
former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the
Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and
he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk
about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your
private holidays when you were the Transport Minister? The answer is “yes” and
he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself
to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many
people are struggling to pay their mortgage
or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls
for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is
not a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences
politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor,
Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing
it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book
is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds
up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour is
quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front
row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year
for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the
front row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime
Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to
others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the
claims in the book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office
phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who
can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard
to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these
staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the
front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

The A Star Is Born actress then strolled into another empty room inside the Louvre
and a small smile broke out onto her face upon seeing a certain piece of artwork.
‘And everyone laughs at him just the same. They don’t
see his lonely heartbreak,’ she continued to sing.

But fate deals the hand that I see. The joker is me,’ the lyrics in the teaser also included.
Lady Gaga began to walk away and looked over shoulder
to take one last look at the artwork, and revealed Harley
Quinn makeup on her face.
She tossed her arms up into the air as she danced her
way out of the abandoned Louvre Museum as the reel came to an end.
In conclusion, text on the screen revealed that an exhibition at the Louvre called Figures of the Fool will begin next month on October 16.
According to the official website, the museum is ‘dedicating an unprecedented exhibition to the myriad
figures of the fool, which permeated the pictorial landscape of the 13th to the 16th
centuries.’
In the caption of the post, the performer wrote to her

For cheese, you can begin with the source: cow, goat, or sheep.

Riesling and Young Gouda Cheese
Rieslings give off the scent of peaches, plums,
and cherries. This white wine has a lighter body than Chardonnay.
When paired with young Gouda cheese brands, the flavors combine and become
sweet with a soft bite or tartness.
Chardonnay and Mild Cheddar Cheese
Chardonnay is one of the most popular wines in the world.
Fermented plump-green grapes and oak barrels give it its buttery mouth feel.
The fruitiness and crispness of the medium-body Chardonnay

Made from cow’s milk, the creaminess of young cheddar cheese

This soft, aromatic wine burst with flavor when paired with the earthiness of Chevre.
Chevre is goat cheese and taste much different
then cheese made with cow’s milk.
Zinfandel and Muenster
A thick dark jam swirled together with black pepper describes this
medium to full-body red wine, Zinfandel. Muenster is mild,
almost bland, and is soft on the palate. The smoothness of this cow cheese will not overpower the spiciness of Zins, but rather compliment it.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Extra Sharp Cheeses
Cabernets are very dry and deep red wines. Known for their velvety richness and full
body, Cabs are acidic and have tannins. Because of the
strong flavors, they pair well with a cheese that competes equally in strong tastes.
Aged cheese, such as extra sharp cheddar, pair well with this high alcohol beverage.
Gorgonzola, a salty blue cheese, is a good complement. Roquefort is a well-known, readily available

Merlot and Aged Gouda
Another dry red wine, Merlot is different from Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlots are medium to full-body and a little softer
than cabs, and have less tannin. Merlots have strong hints of ripe black cherries, plums and black tea.
Herbs naturally bring out the fruitiness.
Ages Gouda is very firm and cuts neatly into small squares.
It is sharp and stands up to richer dark red wines.

Pinot Noir and Gruyere
Pinot Noir is a light-medium red wine and not a dark as Merlots and Cabs.
Pinot Noir wine has a fruity jam flavor, like raspberries
and strawberries. Gruyere is an aged cheese that tastes nutty with a hint of saltiness.
It does not overpower the palate and brings out the ripeness of the Pinot Noir.
Port and Stilton
Port is sweet, red dessert wine. It does not have the tannins and
acidity of other reds. Port is a fortified with the liquor Brandy.
Once combined, the Brandy prevents the grapes from converting
to more alcohol and keeps the wine ‘youthful’.
Stilton is a strong blue cheese. The tastes of
the sweet Port mixed with the robust, salty
Stilton makes for a very intense pairing. Serve this
dish in small bite-size portions with a small but hearty
glass of port. It can be overwhelming in large quantities.

pairing is the bolder rich red wines go with cheese that is just as bold.
Think well-aged cheese or blue cheeses for Cabs, Merlots, and Pinot Noir.

Up the great staircase trooped the 2,500 guests,
resplendent in tiaras and jewels or white tie and tails, to be greeted by their hostess, the Marchioness of Londonderry, glamorous in a clinging
black satin Paris dress. Either side of her impressive cleavage gleamed great
swathes of diamonds. Round her neck hung a heavy row of pearls that fell below her waist.
On her head was the largest of the Londonderry tiaras, so big it was known in the family as ‘the fender’.
Pale rays illuminate the top-lit gallery of Londonderry house
Beside her stood her handsome husband Charles, the
seventh Marquess of Londonderry, and the Prime Minister, Lloyd George.
That November night in 1919 was Edith Londonderry’s first Eve of Parliament reception, a tradition that continued for 20-odd years.

Londonderry House, like many of London’s great houses, was built for entertaining.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, most aristocrats and others who
lived on their estates for much of the year had a town house to which they migrated for ‘the Season’ – those summer months filled with balls and parties, when débutantes were presented at court and
launched into ‘society’ in the hope of making a splendid marriage.
The ballroom, Devonshire House
These houses were as magnificent as their owners could manage.
Built and decorated by the most talented of the age, they were sumptuously furnished – walls were hung
with silk, damask and wonderful paintings – and often embellished with marble statuary.
The mustard-yellow drawing rooms of Londonderry House were filled with blue Sèvres vases and gold plate; in the entrance hall stood a Canova statue of Theseus and the Minotaur (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum).
Suites of rooms, with a ballroom at one end, could be flung open for entertaining.
Georgiana Cavendish (1757-1806), a lover of gambling – and threesomes
Today most of these palatial mansions have been pulled
down or turned into blocks of flats. With their disappearance went their
furnishings, objets and paintings. But what their wonderful rooms looked like can be seen in London: Lost Interiors, a book compiled from superb black-and-white
photographs of these amazing houses, some of which belonged to aristocratic landowners, others to plutocrats
or society figures.
The drawing room, Grosvenor House
Most of the townhouses – those used for the Season rather than permanent residences
– were clustered round Park Lane, Mayfair or on Piccadilly,
like Devonshire House. Here once lived the fifth Duke of
Devonshire and his wife Georgiana (pronounced jaw-janer), whom he had married in 1774 when she was just 17.
She was a celebrated beauty who quickly became a leader of fashion, famous for her towering hairstyles three feet high, decorated
with birds, fruit, even ships in sail. The couple spent 20
years in a ménage à trois with Lady Elizabeth Foster, Georgiana’s close friend,
who was also the Duke’s mistress. Meanwhile, Georgiana’s
gambling led to mounting debts: on her death in 1806 they were found to be the equivalent of £4 million in today’s money.
The rich, restless second Duke of Westminster,
AKA Bendor, in his 20s
Another Park Lane mansion was Grosvenor House, belonging to the dukes
of Westminster and one of the largest in London, as befitted the family’s status
and wealth (their huge fortune came from their ownership
of Mayfair). Bendor, the blond and handsome second duke
(1879-1953) was known as one of the richest men in England, lavishing jewels on his mistresses, chief among whom was Coco Chanel.
The picture gallery, Grosvenor House
A restless soul, Bendor would arrive without warning at any of his houses (or yachts).
All were kept ready: cars fuelled, silver polished, servants in livery.
But after the First World War, during which Grosvenor House had been requisitioned
as a hospital, land prices had risen so high that even for Bendor it had
become uneconomic and he sold it. It was demolished in 1927 and the
Grosvenor House Hotel was built on the site.

At the other end of the scale was 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home of Cecil Beaton from 1940 to 1975.
Superbly furnished by this brilliant photographer, it was described loftily by the diarist Chips
Channon (for whom the word ‘snob’ could have been invented – in his diaries he declares, ‘I am only
really happy with royalty’) as ‘a tiny but super-attractive snuffbox of a house’.
Beaton, himself no social slouch, ran him close: at his parties the women often wore stiletto
heels, which pitted the floor, and later he would point
them out, saying, ‘That’s Princess Marina, that’s
Julie Andrews, that’s Vivien Leigh…’
French furnishings at 8 Pelham Place, the South Kensington home
of Cecil Beaton
Beaton’s near neighbour in Pelham Place, until the mid-60s, was
the great stage designer Oliver Messel. When Messel’s nephew Tony Armstrong-Jones (later Lord
Snowdon) became engaged to Princess Margaret,
Messel laid on a lunch, asking the Princess if there was anyone
she would particularly like to meet. She said she had
always greatly admired the witty cabaret star Bea Lillie and so Messel invited her.
What none of them knew was that Bea Lillie had a drinking habit.
At the end of lunch she slid quietly under the table and
was carried upstairs to sleep it off. Tony and the Princess
took their leave and Messel rushed back to his studio, where he was busy with fittings for Elizabeth Taylor, only to be interrupted
by a telephone call.

‘It’s Kensington Police Station here, Mr Messel,’ said the
voice at the other end. ‘We thought you ought to know that
there’s a naked woman on your balcony, throwing bottles at
everyone who passes by.’
Among the last of these fascinating residences to survive was the aforementioned Londonderry House.
Throughout the 20s and 30s it had seen receptions and balls, hosted by
the Londonderrys for their four daughters and two granddaughters.
When eventually it had to go, in July 1962, a farewell party for 300 was given by Alastair,
the 9th Marquess. Live sounds were supplied by a blues band featuring a swaggering young Mick Jagger, no less – presaging the rise of a whole
new swinging London generation.
