    In an early scene in “Smile 2,” the fictional pop superstar Skye
    Riley is in her drug dealer’s apartment. “Do you believe in weird stuff?” he asks her, between doing lines of coke.

    You certainly will after this horror romp – writer-director Parker Finn’s second movie that suddenly
    opens up the franchise with the promises of multiple directions in the future.
    Not for that drug dealer, though: He soon smiles at her demonically as he repeatedly slams a 35-pound gym weight into his head, making it
    hamburger.

    “Smile 2” lands as unsettling grins are plastered on pumpkins and politicians
    alike as we approach Halloween and Election Day, and the psychotic, overly
    made-up leads of “Joker: Folie à Deux” have been putting up a brave face at
    their terrible box-office numbers.

    So it’s the perfect time for a sequel to 2020’s “Smile,” which bridged the gap between elevated art
    horror and straight-out, unapologetic slasher. Finn this time takes on fame, a better
    tonal fit than the generational trauma of the first.
    It’s a meditation on breakdowns in the public eye, with a side dish
    of body horror.

    We start six days after the last movie but they are barely connected –
    a single character for a few minutes – as we watch a demon that forces its
    victims to smile before meeting a gruesome end working its way into the low-level drug game.

    The evil entity will eventually glom onto our heroine, Skye, a fictional Grammy-winning pop superstar akin to if Lady Gaga and
    Miley Cyrus had a baby. We meet her a year
    after a horrific car crash she was in that killed
    her famous boyfriend and left her with a Vicodin addiction and rumors about whether she had anything to do with it.
    That drug dealer has now infected Skye, but she has no idea what’s in store (or in score, the terrific work of Cristobal Tapia de Veer).

    On thing to really beam about is leading lady Naomi Scott going for it all-out, all snot, smeared blood and wide-eyed, full
    on-fear. Scott manages to pour her humanity into the part – diva, whimpering, defiant,
    strung out, panicked. She even sings on the soundtrack – songs that are credible hits.

    The smile demon collides with Skye as she’s about
    to launch a comeback tour and the pressure is on. Finn
    is at his best here, mocking confessional TV interviews – a Drew Barrymore
    cameo, a nice touch – full of self-work and apologies: “I let you down and I promise this will never happen again.”
    Her management demands that she show up “smile and read from the teleprompter.” Skye’s mom – on the payroll –
    is little help: “You need to stay hydrated,” she tells her after
    Skye is clearly in torment.

    Finn has become a much more assured filmmaker and uses humor so well here, from nasty gangsters enjoying pumpkin Frappuccinos to
    our heroine Googling “Does vomit have DNA?” He’s still fond of jump-scares and blood spurting and gross-out tricks, like a body dragged by
    a truck until it’s just a smear with entrails. One delightful
    moment has Skye chased by demonic backup dancers, a
    Bob Fosse-meets-“Thriller” sequence.

    Finn also has a ball putting his heroines into cringe-worthy situations.
    In the first movie, a murdered cat got bundled into a kid´s birthday present.
    In this one, it’s a impromptu speech in front of music industry types
    that goes horrifically off the rails. He’s got a deeper target: How do we quiet those voices in our heads that say we’re no good?

    Finn’s script sometime lags as he searches for an ending for
    “Smile 2,” seemingly in two minds, before basically delivering both, kicking up dream sequences and alternate timelines like a squid pumping out ink to cover its tracks.
    Over two hours ends up being too long.

    But he has found a great satirical target, given life to a third film easily and showcased another rising star to watch.
    That’s a reason to, well, smile about.

    “Smile 2,” a Paramount Pictures release that lands in movie theaters on Friday, is rated R for “strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use.” Running
    time: 127 minutes. Three stars out of four.

    Thus far, Joker: Folie à Deux has a 60% critic approval rating
    (out of 58 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

    The 1981-set first film Joker made history in 2019 as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, amassing $1.079B at the global box office despite
    mixed reviews.

    Terrifier 3 dethrones Joker: Folie À Deux as box office champ

    ‘This shows Hollywood that we need to start making movies that take risks again.

    The star said he had yet to see the panned Joker sequel, saying: ‘I
    was shocked too as the first Joker film I loved, I’m curious to see why people aren’t as crazy about the
    second one.’    

    Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood
    fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have ‘certified’ it
    ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.

    The film earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.   

    Landing in third place was Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend could
    not overcome the bad reviews, enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.

    The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of
    being in more than four thousand theaters across the US. 

    Thornton said the runaway success of his film had left him stunned as he

    taken by theaters — though Warner Bros. sources claim the
    number is $375 million.

    A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any
    estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and
    continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’

    ‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will
    continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’

    So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

    The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the
    country’s movers and shakers where secret deals
    were done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye back in 2007.

    Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of
    dollars wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.

    It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had even started, when he
    was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.

    And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up
    to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy
    for Labor. 

    The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become
    prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat. 

    The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about
    a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both members during their terms as PM. 

    But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member
    – revealed a politically charged remark made within the club’s
    hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.

    The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter
    Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from
    romping in on election day.

    In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his
    Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt,
    and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

    into the public conscience in 2007 as the result of a political furore

    Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a
    Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002 during a row before
    the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the VIP club

    The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s
    remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.

    In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge
    is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club. 

    ‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson. 

    ‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

    In his opinion piece, Price also revealed
    TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.

    Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was
    his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett
    had made.

    Other prominent media figures, such as 60
    Minutes reporters, actors and performers, and well-known writers and
    sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.

    Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place,
    but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership
    for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

    The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the
    club’s hushed confines.

    ‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that
    the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff

    The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs
    of the day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.

    Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya
    Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from
    Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.

    Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the
    airline’s spokesperson  told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’

    Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted
    free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with
    one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’. 

    Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the
    ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

    They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which
    has stirred up the controversy. 

    A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both
    Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives
    and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive
    lounge.

    Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements. 

    At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.
    What’s appropriate is transparency.’  

    Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer
    Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

    On the Coalition side of parliament, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, deputy leader David Littleproud and former deputy Barnaby
    Joyce are also among the swathes of politicians who have disclosed they have taken up free membership to the
    contentious club.

    Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still
    a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.

    Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer
    Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb
    and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
    some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s
    Lounge despite regulating the airline. 

    Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel
    Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.

    Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class
    flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer
    points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events. 

    Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

    Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports
    – are suitably discreet.

    Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

    Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the
    ‘Beyond’ lounge. 

    Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the
    Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.

    The select few to take a principled stand on the issue
    include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates,
    Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal
    from Victoria.

    Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent
    Commission Against Corruption and a director
    of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.

    ‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s
    Club membership,’ he said.

    ‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.
    Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

    a number of fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense

    The movie’s box office collapse was swift and
    has many in the industry wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning,
    billion-dollar film with the same creative team go wrong?
    Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the
    movie for a $70 million debut, which would still
    have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch
    in October 2019.

    Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and
    its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature
    of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the

    Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival,
    where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.

    But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the
    fragile foundation would crumble in the coming weeks with its Rotten Tomatoes score dropping from 63 percent at Venice
    to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps
    even more surprising were the audience reviews:
    Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
    Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager half star out of five possible.

    ‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for
    Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
    A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie
    would be a solid debut.’

    Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was
    to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less
    than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner
    Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
    About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

    Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788
    screens, bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks,
    Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

    Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s
    made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice  took third place in weekend five,
    Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s
    Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

    The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just
    $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.

    Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater
    owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

    The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

    Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first
    film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and
    delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and
    awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
    It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.
    Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

    The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces,
    some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.

    In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening
    their wallets to see revered comic book characters on the big screen.

    ‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
    ‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
    They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

    Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
    ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,
    ‘ he wrote on Saturday.

    The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might
    send the wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people
    still flocked to see what the fuss was about. Joker went
    on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
    It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer
    when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

    Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.

    and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

    Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

    The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

    ‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

    ‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making
    both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what
    they stand for.

    Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by
    the Democrat and Republican parties.

    There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and
    Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few
    votes in comparison.

    Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

    The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised
    to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

    He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

    Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

    The former New York property developer had even considered
    running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement
    – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross
    Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.

    Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former
    Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying
    six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.

    Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have
    taken votes away from the two traditional
    parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

    This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of
    Representatives.

    Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge
    success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at

    In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from
    former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

    She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the
    lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

    Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was

    The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late
    2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest
    at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. 

    The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the

    With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed
    its way to the top of the box office over the weekend.
    The plot about a deadly clown named Art, determined to literally
    kill the Christmas holiday spirit in a small town,
    earned $18.3 million at the box office according to The Numbers.

    The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated
    blood fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and
    given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.

    Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a
    robot named Roz who is stranded on a small island after being shipwrecked.
    There, she bonds with the animals, who are her new neighbors, and begins taking care
    of an orphaned goose. 

    Lupita Nyong’o voices Roz, while Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara and Ving Rhames offer their voices to other characters.
