    Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the
    Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark
    Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday
    (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of
    a fashion statement.

    The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to
    create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.

    It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including
    Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at
    least three different Fair Isle designs.

    Kensington Palace

    Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who
    recently layered a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a
    light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest
    from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple,
    and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’
    club in London last year.

    A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits
    for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
    If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from
    Loro Piana is a little out of your budget, there are countless options on the high street.
    The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught our attention, as did the Fair Isle knit that was featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert.

    The film is likely to be a hot contender during the upcoming awards season, having recived a 98-percent rating from both critics
    and moviegoers on Rotten Tomatoes. 

    It earned $13.45 million over the weekend. So far, the film has
    pulled in more than $83.7 million domestically and more than $64 million internationally for a global take of
    $148.45 million.  

    Landing in third place was Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga
    in Joker: Folie à Deux. After winning the box office competition during its debut weekend
    could not overcome the bad reviews, enduring an 82-percent decline in ticket sales.

    The movie collected only $7.055 million, in spite of being in more than four thousand theaters across the US.   

    Michael Keaton is still stirring the pot in Beetlejuice
    Beetlejuice. The highly anticipated dramady continues to delight
    audiences who turned some $7.05 million to catch the quirky supernatural struggle
    between the ghastly ghoul and the Deetz family.

    Debuting at number five is the Pharrell Williams
    biopic Piece by Piece. The animated story of Williams’ rise from poverty
    to becoming one of the most beloved musical stars in the world is told with Lego characters.

    Artists Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z
    and more appear as Lego characters in Williams’
    musical journey.  The movie was a hit with fans who helped it earn $3.8 million even though it was shown in less than 2,000 theaters.

    With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3 slashed
    its way to the top of the heap. The movie about a deadly clown named Art, determined to literally kill the Christmas
    holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3 million at the box office

     The Wild Robot, starring Lupita Nyong’o as the voice of the title character,  held on to second place
    earning  $13.45 million over the weekend

    The Vancouver Whitecaps are up for sale and could fetch close
    to $500 million.

    Majority owner Greg Kerfoot and his group that includes former NBA star Steve Nash have retained
    Goldman Sachs to oversee the process. Sportico pinned the franchise’s value at $470 million in January.

    The plan is to sell the franchise to someone who will keep it in Vancouver.

    “The current ownership has built a solid foundation for the Whitecaps — it is the right time for an owner with the platform, resources and ambition to enhance the club’s ability to compete at the highest levels of Major League Soccer and steward the club in realizing its significant potential,” the club said in a statement.

    Kerfoot bought the team in November 2002 when it was a USL franchise
    for a reported $30 million. Vancouver landed an MLS expansion team in 2009 and began play in the league in 2011.

    “The Vancouver Whitecaps would not be where they are today without the vision and commitment of this exceptional ownership group,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said of the Kerfoot group in a statement.
    “The Whitecaps are a terrific club in a world-class city. On behalf of everyone at Major League Soccer, I want to thank them for their tremendous contributions and look forward to working with them to identify new ownership for the club.”

    Nearly three years ago, Real Salt Lake was purchased for nearly $400 million.

    The Whitecaps have made the playoffs in three of the past four seasons and have star players
    Brian White (16 goals in 2024) and Ryan Gauld (10 goals, 15 assists) on the roster.

    Some form of the Whitecaps has been in Vancouver since the franchise
    became part of the North American Soccer League
    late in 1973.
