Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author
dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over
what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The
Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail
Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony
Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister
‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by
personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister
has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese
got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot
the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the
foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his
employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the
Prime Minister said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of
Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed,
it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just
before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity
Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was
still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their
own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial
Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and
he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent,
the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part
to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony
Albanese. This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal,
National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a scalp.
That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the
freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a
long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is
what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of
the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get
what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are)
just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s
travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their
office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s
empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and
you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who
can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony
Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end
of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced the
front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business,
but they don’t get paid like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford
to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Abbie Chatfield has shared a very telling throwback image of herself and boyfriend Adam Hyde,
six months before they went Instagram Official.
The veteran presenter, 29, and the Peking Duk frontman went public with their relationship in June.
However another racy photo, taken before they

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out
from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative
to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair
Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique
to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the
1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest
by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from

crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.

The Australian government has issued a stern warning to horror fans flocking to cinemas to
see the ultra-violent slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about its extreme content and disturbing themes.
The film, directed by Damien Leone, has drawn huge crowds since
it’s release on October 10, as it continues the blood-soaked saga of Art the Clown with more gruesome, stomach-churning
scenes.
The movie has broken box office records as horror enthusiasts are lured in by the film’s reputation for
intense violence and shock value.
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional
Development, Communications, and the Arts has warned Australian audiences to prepare
for scenes of graphic violence, dismemberment and disturbing themes that go well beyond typical horror fare.
The film includes brutal depictions of murder using a variety of weapons, from chainsaws to axes
and guns, resulting in explicit injury detail and copious amounts of blood.
The warning also highlights that the movie portrays self-harm, cannibalism, animal cruelty and violence involving
children, pushing the boundaries of what
the most hardened horror fans has seen before.
One of the film’s more controversial moments includes a scene of implied masturbation coupled with self-harm, along with
a shower scene that hints at sexual activity.

The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two people fainted right in front of her during the screening she attended
at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over the weekend.
The first fainted during the opening scene, she
said in her film review shared to YouTube, and the second nearer to the end of the two-house spectacle.
‘Can you tell me… why did two people feint right in front of me during that film?’ she said.
‘Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because they felt so queasy.’
The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both
people and tried to assist them because she was seated directly behind them.
The first was a man, who left with a friend who came to check on him,
and second Australian victim was a young woman.
‘This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the stairs, I felt so bad for her.
I went and checked on her afterwards,’ Clarke claimed.
‘She did get help. She was with her friend. It
really shook me up too. It actually took me out of the film for the moment.’
The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies for the past four
years, said she has never seen audience members have such a visceral reaction to a film.

Clarke described the third installment of Leone’s series — which is set to open nationally

‘Before anyone says they’re paid actors, I saw the girl and she had injuries.
They were both very young people. I feel really awful about it to be honest.’

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a
time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the
bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared
on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them
much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better
dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to
be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved
hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit
near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze
of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack
of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters
hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and
smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance
of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes,
skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra
caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at
just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously.
That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.

The Warner Bros. film has made $192.2 million worldwide, with $56.6 million in domestic box office revenue, according to Box Office Mojo.
Some fans have said that despite the film’s initial failure financially and with critics, it will be
looked upon favorably years from now.
Lady Gaga has had some commercial success in recent months with her pairing with Bruno Mars on Die With a Smile,
which was released in August, landing in the third spot
on Billboard’s Hot 100.
In 2020, she put out the studio album Chromatica, which initially landed in the top spot upon its debut and included the hit single Rain on Me, a

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were
done in private luxury first exploded into the public eye
back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the
nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline,
Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime
minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both
members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge
member – revealed a politically charged remark made within the
club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change
the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his
Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what
the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas
chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had
made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors and performers,
and well-known writers and sports people are said to
be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential conversation in a private place, but which exposed him
to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of
its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite politicians and
business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne
at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about
discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price
of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce,
Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was ‘so exclusive that you have to be personally invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.
‘A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff who will be travelling cattle class.
‘Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have
included Pauline Hanson.
‘Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently
enjoying a prolonged exposure to cattle-class in Kirkconnell Correctional Centre.’ (Cooper was the former HIH insurance executive jailed for eight years on fraud and bribery offences).

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the day, Philip Ruddock,
Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya
Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a
gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is
reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the
country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied
the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers –
in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest
statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his
upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate.
What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

membership to the contentious club.
Bill Shorten is a member, Tanya Plibersek is still
a member and so is Teal MP, Zali Steggall.
Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer
Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo
and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department
of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries
Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador
to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class
flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points,
and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership
to the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs
– in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious,
with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the
‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the
wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South Australian senator Barbara Pocock
and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique
Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption and a director
of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and
you are supposed to represent the public. Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade,
German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said
on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3%
growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s
economy, which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to
try to return the economy to growth.
“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner
said, adding that the growth initiative was just a
first step for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances
in order, or to put them back in order where necessary.
“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but
he would do so on Monday evening.
“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.
“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was
little changed on Friday against the dollar, but is headed for
its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald
Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s
policies are expected to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The
yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous
close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the
yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan,
strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities
improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at the
conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s
near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced
until an annual parliament meeting in March. During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar
after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5%
a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields below 2% to record
lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward

The chief executive of the company that makes Marlboro
cigarettes was quoted by Britain’s Mail on Sunday as saying that the
tobacco company foresaw an end to its sales of traditional cigarettes in Britain within 10 years.
“I want to allow this company to leave smoking behind,” Jacek Olczak, the CEO of Philip Morris International, was quoted in the paper saying.
“I think in the UK, ten years from now maximum, you can completely solve the problem of smoking.´
Asked if that meant Philip Morris would stop selling traditional cigarettes in the UK within that time, he was quoted as saying, “Absolutely.”
Olczak said that the company’s Marlboro brand would “disappear” from Britain.
For years, Philip Morris has said that its future will not include Marlboro cigarettes as it shifts to electronic devices. The company has been vocal in laying out its goal of replacing cigarettes with alternatives such as its IQOS heated tobacco system that heats tobacco without burning it.
The goal of Philip Morris, it has said, is to become a majority smoke-free company in terms of net revenues by the end of 2025.
