    “I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,”
    Lindner said. “What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”

    Lindner said he could not comment on thе French
    budget plans ƅecause һe had not had thｅ chanc to talk with һis French

    The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and
    ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he
    ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James
    Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

    A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
    Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

    In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.

    On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of
    31% and a critic score of 32%

    DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
    Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to
    say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

    It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who
    took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

    Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
    told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
    movie.’

    Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after
    WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director
    would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

    The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

    However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

    Ahead of the movie’s release, Lady Gaga also dropped an accompanying
    album titled Harlequin on September 27. 

    Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up
    to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady
    Gaga’s ‘thin’ role in the film following its release on Friday. 

    ‘That’s way below what we expected,’ one wrote in regards to
    the current Rotten Tomatoes scores. ‘People are saying this
    is the worst sequel ever’

    A fan explained, ‘yea this film was bad. it was pretentious and dull.
    has the aesthetic of an arthouse film without the substance’

    The ‘bleak’ sequel, has also received a tepid reception from fans,
    with some claiming Lady Gaga’s career could be at risk.

    While the same director Todd Phillips was back in the
    hot seat, critics have said the sequel is just a ‘repeat’ of the
    first hit but with an added musical twist.

    Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly
    in the movie and claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

    While the majority of critics say Joker: Folie À Deux didn’t live up to expectations,
    others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’ 

    Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and
    ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill. 

    The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered as one of the most subversive and original films
    of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring
    as its predecessor’.

    Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

    Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel,
    Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her. 

    Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

    Along with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie
    Beatz and Steve Coogan.

    Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about

    Despite the raciness of the content he had just read from his daughter’s book, Tony
    admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.

    ‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.

    ‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its
    my daughter we’re talking about. If it was somebody else, it would
    be a different story altogether. I’d be so excited.

    ‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’

    Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie. 

    ‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she
    put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony
    read.

    The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the
    first time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford
    Clinic in November in 2022.

    During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took around
    10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

    All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the
    perks he took from the airline. 

    Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners
    are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s
    Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas chair.

    This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with Qantas matters. 

    If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO
    Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book, he may have fallen foul
    of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits
    ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’ 

    Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023,
    as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

    A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the
    requirements to serve the high and mighty

    Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability
    to work a seven- day rotating roster.

    The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr
    Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston. 

    Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce
    while in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister
    for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only
    the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.

    LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy
    has lost competitiveness over the past decade,
    German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.

    “We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.

    The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast
    from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.

    If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy,
    which was the weakest among its large euro zone peers
    last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.

    Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the economy to growth.

    “After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding that
    the growth initiative was just a first step for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”

    AMBITION NEEDED

    Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order,
    or to put them back in order where necessary.

    “I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.

    “What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”

    Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget plans because he had not had the chance
    to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday
    evening.

    “We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.

    “We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

    Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at
    the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the
    first place hear themselves?

    In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major
    parties look set to come together to support.

    The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals
    can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates
    to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any
    party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties
    currently spend.

    The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations,
    thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.

    So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes
    – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.

    The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing
    the speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.

    At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made –
    but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
    well after elections are won and lost.

    In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into
    campaigning by the wealthy.

    Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

    said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’

    Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party,
    as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
    And how much they can donate will be capped.

    Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
    labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’
    and ‘a rort, not a reform’. 

    They have lost their collective minds after finding out that
    Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the
    opposition.

    I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write
    this column.

    Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures
    stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer
    to accountability.

    More fool me.

    The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor
    and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

    It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the
    Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

    Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive
    Palmer

    Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à Court

    The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls
    to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and Senator
    Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)

    The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes
    amongst the Teals. 

    And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past,
    contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

    Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile
    from reforms that will curtail dark art of political
    donations.

    The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency
    rules to take effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort
    of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

    They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone
    enough time to absorb and understand the changes before
    preparing for them.

    Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the
    opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

    As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of
    taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

    But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal
    to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench
    should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to
    what is being advocated for.

    They might even be able to offer something worthwhile
    that could be incorporated in the package.

    To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about
    being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

    unearthed in fragments of volcanic rock and compared it to two modern-era examples – one from a
    living tree and another from a specimen that had died a few years earlier.

    Dr Elizabetta Boaretto of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel took
    20 samples from the living tree and 11 from the dead
    branches, which had been cut in 2013.

    These samples were used to asses how olive trees grow, and apply the latest findings to the ancient sample unearthed in Santorini.

    Until now, it was believed the outermost ring of wood in the 3,500 year-old olive tree sample was formed just before the branch
    was buried alive by the eruption.

    According to the study: ‘The outermost rings of an olive branch buried during the Santorini volcanic eruption is regarded as
    crucial evidence for the date of this cataclysmic event.’

    However, Dr Boaretto and her colleagues discovered that olive trees are different to most trees and do not produce visible growth rings each
    year.

    Using this found knowledge, scientists tested other
    samples from the ancient olive tree branch to discovered parts of the branch almost a century older than previous estimates for the volcanic eruption on Thera.  

    This cross section of one of the olive tree trunks is an example of the samples used by the researchers.
    They say the growth pattern of the olive tree was unusual and therefore may
    mean the original estimation of the Santorini eruption was incorrect 

    The eruption is one of the largest in Earth’s history and devastated the island of Terea
    – modern-day Santorini (pictured) – and decimated fledgling societies on the Mediterranean islands as
    it triggered an earthquake and a tsunami

    It was just weeks after Trump had stunned the world and won,
    and the same liberal media and Hollywood types, who perpetuated every vicious attack against
    him, reveled as O’Donnell’s vile lie wormed its way across social
    media.

    It was a shock to see such naked cruelty towards a First Child, especially when so
    many of us had treated Chelsea Clinton and the Obama daughters like Fabergé eggs.
    Kids (including mine) should always be off limits.

    I’ve known and worked alongside Melania for many years, and regard her as a friend.

    Earlier this year, Melania and I lost our mothers just
    weeks apart. Even as she navigated her loss in public view, Melania made every effort

    control – looking at you, Jill Biden – nor controlled by her partner.
    She is what many feminists insist they are: independent, a product of her own choices, comfortable in her own skin.

    There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl Inn.

    Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold is well
    kept and a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing wood burner;
    or in the dining room, solid and comfortable,
    with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths;
    it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that
    makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

    We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm,
    who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland
    County Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty
    knows his alliums; and the force of nature that
    is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
    But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese
    soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly,
    lasciviously rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham,
    is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.
    A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a
    deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.

    There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched
    by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked
    rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side of bitter.
    It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices,
    drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite
    of pure ovine brilliance.

    Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with
    damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is
    famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic
    version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream
    and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
    This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
    It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start. But first, another
    bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too
    rare to be rushed.

    Amid the early returns, a number of fans took
    up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels
    to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

    ‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100%
    as divisive as people are making it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to

    JAKARTA/LOS ANGELES, Nov 13 (Reuters) – Juul Labs Inc is exploring selling its compact vaping devices in Asia and has sounded out government officials in Indonesia,
    one of the world’s most smoker-friendly countries, although gaining approval there
    could face significant hurdles.

    Expansion into Asia would provide the fast-growing
    firm with new markets at a time when it faces increased regulatory scrutiny in the
    United States and Israel over the potential health risks of its products’ high nicotine
    content.

    Juul representatives held discussions with the Indonesian government last
    month about introducing its vaping devices, the country’s finance ministry officials told Reuters.

    Indonesia has one of the world’s highest rates of smoking among adults and teenage boys and imposes no penalties for selling cigarettes to minors.
    It also has a population of 260 million, making it a highly
    attractive market for tobacco and vaping firms.

    A person familiar with Juul’s plans said executives for
    the San Francisco-based company are concerned authorities may
    be reluctant to grant approval due to likely opposition from
    the traditional tobacco industry, which provides much of Indonesia’s tax revenue.

    Tobacco taxes accounted for nearly 150 trillion rupiah ($10.2 billion)
    or about 11 percent of national tax revenue in 2017,
    government data showed. Each province also imposes taxes on cigarettes.

    Juul is also worried its argument that vaping is healthier than smoking will not hold much sway in Indonesia,
    which is not as concerned as other countries about health issues, said the person, declining to be identified as the
    discussions were not public.

    Juul representatives reached out to the finance ministry to discuss how it would
    be taxed on any sales of devices there, the Indonesian officials said.

    The government needs to examine the domestic e-cigarette market to determine how
    a foreign player such as Juul could hurt local small and labour-intensive e-cigarette firms, said Sunaryo, a senior official in Indonesia’s customs and excise office,
    who like many Indonesians uses only one name.

    “We will need it to study it,” he said, adding he wasn’t sure Juul would
    comply with a regulation that requires e-cigarette devices and liquids to be
    sold separately.

    Juul also would need approval from Indonesia’s Food
    and Drug Agency. Officials at the agency said Juul had yet to be
    in touch.

    Other Asian countries the three-year old firm is actively considering for expansion include India, South Korea and the Philippines, the person familiar with Juul’s
    plans said.

    In addition to Indonesia, Juul filed trademark applications for
    those countries between April and October 2018, as well as in Malaysia and Singapore, according to a Reuters review of
    government filings. It opened its first Asia office in Singapore in July.

    So far Juul, currently valued at $16 billion, is available only in the United States,
    Canada, the UK and Israel. It has plans to enter Russia later this year.

    Juul said in a statement to Reuters it is “proactively learning more” and engaging with local officials in Asia
    “to understand and hear their views.” It does not have immediate plans to launch
    in any Asian country, it said. Juul spokeswoman Victoria
    Davis declined to elaborate.

    A TAXING QUESTION

    Indonesia is one of only a handful of United Nations member states that has not signed on to the World Health Organization’s global treaty that
    sets standards for tobacco control.

    Roughly two-thirds of Indonesian men smoke tobacco daily, and more
    than 21 percent of boys aged 13-15 smoked cigarettes regularly, according to a WHO report
    last year.

    E-cigarettes, available in Indonesia since at least 2013, are a small but growing market.
    The customs office estimated there are about 300 unsupervised
    liquid makers known as brewers in Indonesia,
    producing various liquid products to more than 4,000 vape stores and 900,000 smokers.

    Philip Morris International Inc, maker of Marlboro cigarettes,
    which now controls about a third of Indonesia’s market through its stake in Sampoerna,
    does not offer any of its non-combustible cigarette products in Indonesia.

    That includes its IQOS device, a heat-not-burn tobacco product, according to a company spokesman, who declined to
    comment on why it has not introduced the product.

    In October, the government imposed a 57 percent tax on electronic-cigarette liquids, on par with taxes on traditional
    cigarettes. But tax collection, particularly from smaller companies, is difficult
    in Indonesia and new rules are often ignored.

    Juul now commands nearly 75 percent of U.S.
    e-cigarette market share, up from 13.6 percent in early 2017, according to a Wells Fargo analysis of Nielsen retail data.

    Its products, like most electronic cigarettes, vaporize a
    liquid containing nicotine. One Juul pod contains as much nicotine as a traditional pack of
    20 cigarettes, according to the company’s U.S.
    marketing.

    Juul liquid in the U.S. has a nicotine concentration of 59
    milligrams per milliliter, much higher than the liquids typically sold
    in earlier versions of e-cigarettes and nearly three times the allowable limit in the European Union.

    In August, Israel banned Juul devices with nicotine concentration of
    more than 20 mg/mL, citing “a grave risk to public health.” Juul is appealing that decision and currently offers a lower nicotine-strength electronic cigarette in Israel.

    In September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration opened an investigation into Juul and other electronic cigarette companies, citing the rising number of
    teens who appear to be using Juul and other vaping devices.
    This week it is expected to issue a ban on fruit and candy-flavoured e-cigarettes sold in convenience stores
    and gas stations.

    In its statement to Reuters, Juul said its products are intended
    for adult use only, and that it aims to “improve the lives of the world’s one billion adult smokers” by providing an alternative to cigarettes.

    heated tobacco device, IQOS, in the U.S.
    to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual forecast for
    the heated tobacco business.

    The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter,
    for which the company reported results on the day.

    The company declined to comment on why the launch
    had been delayed.

    Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio
    of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid stricter regulations and falling smoking rates in some markets.

    The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing
    resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of misrepresenting
    past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.

    The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
    Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device, which it expects by
    the second half of 2025.

    A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already
    hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously assumed.

    This led the company to temper its expectations
    for volume growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full
    year, down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.

    However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual
    sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its
    Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as higher cigarette pricing.

    The movie studio spent about $200 million to produce the film and
    about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.

    It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters —
    though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

    A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by
    anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor
    is reported as fact.’

    ‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing
    and ancillary run.’

    So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed
    $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after
    two weeks of release.

    In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

    The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures, yet ended up being slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office. 

    Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at
    the box office on opening night. 

    The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October 4.

    The movie will be available to rent from home starting October 29, in an effort to recoup some of Warner Bros.
    investment into the film, according to Variety 

    The film is ‘poised to lose at least $150 million to
    $200 million in its theatrical run’ according to the publication

    However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie.

    Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year
    and also received terrible reviews — holds a
    higher score with a C+.

    On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience
    score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.

    The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with
    an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do
    with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month. 

    A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some
    down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
    Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

    In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does
    not include a DC Studios logo.

    A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips
    declined to comment to the publication.

    Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
    Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips
    due to his huge past successes.

    It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control
    of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December
    2022.

    Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them,
    this is kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’

    Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after
    WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to
    filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

    The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around
    20 per cent less.

    A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
    ‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay
    attention to what the fan expectations are,
    you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the
    LA premiere September 30

    However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the
    budget remaining static.

    A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.

    A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No one could get through to Todd.
    And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay
    attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.

    Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film
    at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with
    a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to
    bring the film to Venice. 

    Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel
    include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.
