Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the
Fair Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear
we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed
reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski),
the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a
traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a
casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered
a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck
vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white,
straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring
in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24,
proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana is a little out of
your budget, there are countless options on the high street.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive amounts of
free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was
written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The
Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which
has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his
book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line
to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce
– which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’
and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and
Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger
and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he
was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party
staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister
said.
But before the book even gets to the contents page there
is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate
communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal
MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave
the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him
the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times
with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it,
the terrible circumstances that they create,’
he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack,
Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to
advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas
flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk
about, which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades
on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should
refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop
mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for
him to resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

Among the movers and shakers at Joe Aston’s book launch in the

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book
will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.
They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the
conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public
is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long
time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised
to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front
row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12
years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the
International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever
seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it
looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the
book are) just another example of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight
can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had
a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the
seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat
and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the
CEO. No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these
upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians
to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured
cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid
like CEOs …
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford
to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

My Chemical Romance drummer Bob Bryar found dead at 44
On March 3, 2010, guitarist Frank revealed that Bob had left the band in a
decision he described as ‘painful’.
In an official statement on the band’s website, he wrote: ‘As of 4 weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways.
‘This was a painful decision for all of
us to make and was not taken lightly. We wish him the best
of luck in his future endeavors and expect you all to do the
same.’
In 2015 Bob opened up about feeling ‘angry’ and ‘suicidal’ after he was kicked out of the band as he spoke out about
the dark time in his life.
Taking to Twitter half a decade after he left the group in a now deleted

‘This is my very last drum kit and it’s ready for a new
home. I used this kit when [the band] opened the

Although My Chemical Romance was scheduled to tour in 2025, Bob
was not due to reunite with the band.

Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous
“insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this
week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing
and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International is preparing to
launch its flagship heated tobacco device IQOS in Austin, Texas,
indicating it will be the first testing ground for its U.S.
entry, job adverts on LinkedIn show.
IQOS, the top selling heated tobacco device globally,
sits at the core of the world’s biggest tobacco company’s efforts to
transform its image from a purveyor of cigarettes to
a driving force behind the switch to healthier options.
Investors are waiting to see if Philip Morris (PMI) can create
a market for heated tobacco in the United States, where vaping
currently dominates.
The country offers PMI a substantial base of new users and, potentially, a
hefty new income stream that could prove transformative as
it tries to generate an increasing proportion of revenue from products other than cigarettes.
PMI spent the vast majority of $10.7 billion of expenditure on smoking alternatives between 2008 and 2022 on IQOS’ development.
The Marlboro maker had said it planned to launch the device
in four cities in two U.S. states starting with one city in the second quarter, ahead of
a broader roll-out likely in 2025. However it had not released further details, including around which cities or states it is targeting.
Job adverts posted on LinkedIn reveal that the company is
laying the groundwork for an IQOS launch in Austin, Texas.
The adverts, posted this month, include positions as field
sales representatives, territory managers and retail sales advisors.
Whether or not IQOS takes off in the United States
will be significant given the market’s size. Euromonitor estimates total U.S.
nicotine sales, excluding nicotine replacement therapies, were worth some $143.6 billion in 2022.
While cigarettes accounted for the vast majority of that, Euromonitor forecasts their value will shrink by 30% by 2027.
The value of vapes, heated tobacco products and other alternatives will
rise by 36% over the same period, it says.
TESTING GROUND
Products like IQOS work by heating up sticks of ground up tobacco without burning
them in an attempt to avoid the harmful chemicals
released via combustion.
Heated tobacco products have so far been largely absent
from the U.S. market aside from limited sales of IQOS managed by PMI’s former parent,
Altria, and another product offered on a limited scale by British American Tobacco.
PMI paid Altria $2.7 billion for the rights to market IQOS in the United
States in 2022. BAT has subsequently cast doubt on the category’s
potential in the country, where vaping and
other alternatives are already well established.
Texas offers an interesting trial market given its broad demographics, ranging from super rural to highly urban, said Brett Cooper, managing partner and
analyst at Consumer Edge, an equity research firm. He added that diverse cities like Austin, Houston and Dallas provide access to a wide range of consumer
groups.
Tobacco taxes in the state are also relatively low, according to Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) data. The excise tax rate on a pack of cigarettes
in Texas stood at $1.41 in September 2023, the data shows – far higher than the 17 cents in Missouri but also well below the more than $5 per pack in New York.
Texas introduced new laws around e-cigarettes in January, restricting devices that resemble food products like candy or fruit juice, or that
include a symbol or celebrity image targeted at minors or depict cartoon-like fictional characters.
PMI bets IQOS can win a 10% share of U.S. tobacco and heated tobacco unit volume by around 2030.
Ahead of IQOS’ launch, the company has also been building out its lobbying firepower across the United States.
The company wants two thirds of its revenue to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030.

MOSCOW, Dec 13 (Reuters) – The Kremlin praised
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Friday for
criticising Ukrainian missile strikes deep into Russian territory but said discussions
about deploying European troops to keep a possible future peace in Ukraine were premature.
With Russia advancing at the fastest rate since the 2022 invasion, Trump and
some European leaders have discussed how to
end the war in Ukraine.
Trump criticised Ukraine’s use of U.S.-supplied missiles for attacks deep into Russia in a Time magazine interview
published on Thursday, saying it was “crazy” because it escalated the war.
He said Washington should not have allowed it.
“The statement itself completely coincides with our position,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov
told reporters. He said Trump’s remarks were in line with “our vision of the causes of escalation”.
“It appeals to us,” Peskov said. “It is obvious that Trump understands exactly what is escalating the situation.”
Russia has said the decision by U.S. President Joe Biden to let Ukraine strike deep into Russia with U.S.-made
ATACMS ballistic missiles could trigger a world war,
but some Western leaders suggest Russia has military ambitions beyond Ukraine.
Kyiv says it should be able to strike at its enemy although some U.S.
officials question whether the Ukrainian missile strikes
can change the course of the war.
Russia said on Wednesday Ukraine had struck a military airfield
on the Azov Sea with six U.S.-made ATACMS ballistic missiles.
After Ukraine struck Russia with ATACMS last month, Russia fired a new hypersonic ballistic missile known as
“Oreshnik”, or Hazel Tree, at Ukraine, and Putin said Russia reserved the
right to hit U.S. and British military facilities.
EUROPEAN TROOPS?
While campaigning for the presidency, Trump said he would
swiftly end the war, but has not detailed in public how he would
do so.
Asked whether Trump’s words gave the Kremlin greater hope for ending the war,
Peskov cautioned that during his first term as U.S.
president Trump imposed many sanctions on Russia.
“Let’s not forget, sanctions were imposed against our country over 50 times, and there were many unfriendly manifestations towards our country,”
Peskov said. “This should not be forgotten, so do not get ahead of yourself.”
The Kremlin said discussions by European powers about possibly deploying European troops to police any
ceasefire were premature, but did not dismiss the idea outright.
“All this should be discussed during the negotiations,” Peskov said
of the European discussions. “We have repeatedly said that a truce in itself is not what we want: we need peace.”
Peace, he said, would come after conditions set out
by Russia were fulfilled and all Moscow’s goals were achieved.
Setting out his opening terms for an immediate end to the war,
Putin said in June that Ukraine must drop ambitions to join NATO and withdraw its
troops from four Ukrainian regions claimed and mostly controlled by Russia.
He has also said agreements rejected by Kyiv in early 2022 could
form the basis of a deal.
Reuters reported last month that Putin is open to discussing a
ceasefire deal with Trump but rules out any big territorial concessions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said this week Kyiv wanted an end to
the war and efforts were needed to make his country stronger and oblige the
