Joker: Folie À Deux has been branded the ‘most disappointing follow-up to the Oscar-winning movie’ by critics, as they cast doubt on Lady Gaga’s ‘thin’ role

Most critics have said Todd failed to use Gaga correctly in the movie and claimed she was only bought in for the musical aspect of it.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against
proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate,
caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend
at an election – actually less than the major
parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed
and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the details of who
has given what to whom many months later, well after elections
are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less
big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were
‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said:
‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party,
as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will
need to disclose having done so. And how much they can donate will
be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them
a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that
Labor’s proposal just might secure the support
of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before
even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put
forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.

The major parties have long complained about the influence the
likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy
in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art
of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone
enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and
the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include
hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create
loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support,
not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about
being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

The Joker’s real identity was revealed in Folie à Deux’s ‘brutal ending’ – and it’s not who you think.
Identity confusion is the theme throughout the entire film, as the title suggests, but the ending of the second
instalment may leave some fans surprised.
Following on from 2019’s psychological thriller from director Todd
Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as clown Arthur Fleck who has descended into mental illness.
Folie à Deux begins with Arthur behind bars in Arkham Asylum, waiting
to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for the murders he committed two years
prior.
In the meantime he is enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and
even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel, a fellow inmate on her way, fans believe, to becoming
Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class,
and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that
she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince of crime’, not
the gloomily introspective Arthur.
Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer played by Steve
Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder.
His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke is accused
of five murders, rather than Arthur. Lee just as
urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego.
In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is found guilty of first-degree murder.
As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates outside the court, with two people helping Arthur escape,
but he is later caught by the police and taken back
to Arkham.
In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell Arthur a
joke, before stabbing him in the stomach and while he bleeds to death, carves a smile into his own face.

realises that dressing up in makeup, putting

upon him, this idea that Gotham people put on him, that he
represents.
‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he doesn’t
want to live as a fake anymore — he wants to be who
he is.’
The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit, which was
simply titled Joker.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical was released in theatres on October 4, following
an October 2 international release.

The movie studio spent about $200 million to
produce the film and about $100 million on marketing and distribution, according to the report.
It would need to gross about $450 million at the box office to break
even — when factoring in the cut taken by theaters — though Warner Bros.
sources claim the number is $375 million.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report, saying
‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact.’
‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this
week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.’
So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally
after two weeks of release.
In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent
from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck,
mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a
DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of
the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the
publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say
no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and
Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening
for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he
told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery
merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower
price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would
have cost around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared:
‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the
fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd
Phillips seen with Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the
budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film in Los Angeles’.
A source directly involved with the film said: ‘No
one could get through to Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff:
If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,
you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere
the film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed
back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to
bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve
Coogan.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only
pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a
Christmas jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or
for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has
now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland
and uses a traditional knitting technique to
create those distinctive patterns with multiple colours.
It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family,
including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes
at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered
a Fair Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest
from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle
crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to
ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have
become a timeless investment. If, as in our case, that £1,885
cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana is a little

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar,
but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that
new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song,
Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.”
The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low
of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided
by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan,
strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history as the film bombed at the

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters
– and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box

the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but is headed for its tenth
straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump
will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese
economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from
falling too much. “We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater China
chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved
from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday,
it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan,
aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist
at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing
activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining
weak. China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of
BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree
on major economic goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched
indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions,
likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened
about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the
yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward
pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to 7.50 “if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.” LEVELS

The tech giant’s Year in Search report highlights the top trending people, entertainment, moments, and most-asked questions in the UK

‘Top “trending” queries for 2024 are the searches that had a high spike in traffic
over a sustained period in 2024 as compared to
2023, showing us what was “hot” in 2024,’ it explained.
Top sports searches of the year
From the Paris Olympic Games to England reaching the finals of the Euros, it’s
safe to say that 2024 was a huge year for sports.
Several Olympians including Simone Biles and Adam Peaty were among
the top athletes searched for, alongside footballers Jude Bellingham, Ollie Watkins, and
Cole Palmer.
However, it was the 17-year-old darts prodigy, Luke Littler who topped the athletes list.
What’s more, Littler was the third most searched person overall,
second only to Kate Middleton and Donald Trump.
Responding to the news, Littler said: ‘To be recognised in two of Google’s Year
