    Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians,
    unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

    The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan 
    complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

    ‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at
    the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
    countered.

    ‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
    bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.

    ‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they
    stand for.

    Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat
    and Republican parties.

    There are other parties, including the Green,
    Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

    Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

    Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.

    The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised
    to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before
    he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

    He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

    Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

    The former New York property developer had even considered running for
    president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed
    by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992
    but gained no electoral college votes. 

    Australia, by contrast, has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who
    have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor
    and the Liberal-National coalition

    This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four
    members in the House of Representatives. 

    Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are
    fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.

    This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate
    with the traditional ‘blue’ fiscal approach of the centre-right Liberal party.

    Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent to achieve huge success
    when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

    In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally
    Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

    Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which
    was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in Teal social media adverts.

    They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes
    à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding
    to some Teal candidates.

    Not all independents are Teals, however. 

    There is Dai Lee defeated the former Labor frontbencher and former NSW premier Kristina Keneally in the Sydney seat of
    Fowler.

    And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament,
    spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past
    three decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional
    far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy. 

    Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire
    rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

    According to multiple eye witness accounts, one young woman badly injured herself after she fell down the cinema stairs while fleeing the movie theatre.

    ‘This is going to sound made up and I promise you it’s not,’ Australian horror film critic Emma Clarke began her
    review of David Leone’s controversial new horror-slasher.

    The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two people fainted right in front of her during the screening she attended at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over the weekend.

    The first fainted during the opening scene, she said
    in her film review shared to YouTube, and the second nearer to the end
    of the two-house spectacle.

    ‘Can you tell me… why did two people feint right in front of me during that film?’ she said.

    ‘Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because they felt so queasy.’

    The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both people and tried to assist them because she was seated directly
    behind them.

    The first was a man, who left with a friend who came
    to check on him, and second Australian victim was a young
    woman.

    ‘This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the stairs, I felt so bad
    for her. I went and checked on her afterwards,’ Clarke claimed.

    ‘She did get help. She was with her friend. It really shook me up too.
    It actually took me out of the film for the moment.’

    The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies for
    the past four years, said she has never seen audience
    members have such a visceral reaction to a film.

    Many cinema-goers in Sydney and Melbourne reportedly clapped and cheered during some
    of the film’s most grotesque death scenes

    Clarke described the third installment of Leone’s series — which is set
    to open nationally on Thursday, October 11 — as ‘ fun, intense,
    gory, disturbed, and over the top.’

    ‘I’m not used to horror actually hurting people, so that was a really strange experience,’ she said.

    ‘Before anyone says they’re paid actors, I saw the girl and she had injuries.
    They were both very young people. I feel really awful about it to be honest.’

    ‘It was a very scary moment trying to help them out.’

    Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time, giving Namibians until
    Saturday evening to vote.

    In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed
    up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at
    4:30 am.

    The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
    00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had
    exams the next day.

    issue a joint statement, according to Christine Aochamus who
    represents the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.

    Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.

    Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the first woman to lead the country if elected, could
    face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.

    per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

    China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
    13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
    The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar strength,
    but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

    China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from
    expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
    “Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.

    Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.
    Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well
    if local equities remain supported, similar to what
    happened in Nov. 2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.

    The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09% in Asian trade.
    The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

    The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments will begin at £35million –
    with 600 megarich customers already securing a spot on the waiting list.

    Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and only those with the deepest pockets can hope to afford one of the lavish pads.

    The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be an eye-watering
    £35million – around 70 times the average cost of a house in the
    capital.

    Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily
    surpass London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

    Caudwell told The Standard that there are
    already more than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list
    of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have expressed an interest in making a
    purchase at the scheme.

    There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with
    up to five bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.

    The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the developers say even the most modest property will start with a guide price exceeded by only a handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods. 

    The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,000 sq ft – will be

    average London property value of around £500,000, and 130

    The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground
    level to make room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming pool as well as
    a car park.

    The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice
    RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible for the creation of the basement substructure and superstructure.

    Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build
    the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record breaker, the

    The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of 79 at roof

    A British husband and his Thai wife were left furious after
    their extraordinary row with two Chinese tourists, which left his shirt
    ripped and the police called.

    John, 51, and his Thai wife Pookie, 25, have slammed Thai
    police for allegedly treating them unfairly while investigating an alleged assault in a mall in Phuket, Thailand.

    SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against
    the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new
    tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.

    Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s
    policies are expected to drive up U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.

    However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar
    around midday, little moved from the previous close. Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of 7.2996
    hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing
    streak since 2018.
    The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building”
    in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central
    bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
    Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic
    recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining
    weak.

    China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of BANDS
    Financial. He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during
    next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather
    at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.

    But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched
    indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not
    be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
    During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.

    tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
