The federal government has said that the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be called off in the week starting from Monday, January 28.

The union commenced its nationwide strike on November 5, 2018, following the inability to reach a deal on their demands with the government.

However, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who spoke with pressmen after a press conference on illegal higher institutions on Friday, was quoted to have said there was a possibility of university lecturers ending their strike soon.

Daily Trust quoted him as saying: “Perhaps, by next week, I hope the ASUU strike will be over.”

Bear in mind that ASUU had maintained that university lecturers will only return to work when their demands are met by the federal government.

The union requested the federal government to immediately pay N50 billion out of the outstanding allowance as a sign of commitment to resolve the industrial strike.

Clearly unhappy about the ongoing strike that has left students at home, President Muhammadu Buhari during the week ordered the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to ensure that the ongoing strike action by the university lecturers come to an end with immediate effect.
