Nigerian Government Draws Up Plans To Reopen Schools

On Tuesday, the Federal Government tendered proposed guidelines for the reopening of schools in the country to the National Assembly.

Furthermore, Mr. Emeka Nwajiuba, the Minister of State for Education, presented the proposal during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education.

Also, Nwajiuba explained the ministry’s plans for students to resume to the lawmakers.

Schools in the country stopped opening since March as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

“In the document provided, we have suggested how we can move our education sector forward during this pandemic.

“We don’t want to make it known at this time so that some people will not take our proposed guidelines for school reopening.

“The documents given to you so that you can criticize and make inputs as major stakeholders,” Nwajiuba said.

Meanwhile, in another news trendzhauz.com reported that the Oyo State government has postponed the resumption of students in the state.

A statement by Mr. Taiwo Adisa, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, confirmed that the Commissioner for Education, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye,

and experts from the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) had gone around to schools to determine the compliance level with the COVID-19 prevention protocols.

“By the new arrangement, Teachers are to resume on Monday, June 29, 2020, while students in critical classes including Primary 6, JSS3, and SS3 will resume a week later on July 6, 2020.

“As of Monday, June 22, no fewer than 372 Heads of Schools have been trained by the EOC on the management of the COVID-19 containment procedures, while each of the schools is to appoint an Incident Manager, who will ensure compliance with the approved COVID-19 protocol.

“Each student is expected to wear face masks, while the schools are to prepare well laid out handwashing, spots to guarantee regular washing of hands by the students and teachers.

“The task force also resolved that by July 15, the state government would have reviewed the situation with the schools and come to a conclusion whether the remaining classes would be able to resume or whether the students would have to wait to resume the new session in September 2020.”

    up any dɑү-ߋld bread hanging aгound. The recipe is easy to double սp օn and freeze so yoᥙ havｅ a meal for aаn emergency.

    SERVES 4

    4 tbsp olive oil, ⲣlus extra fօr the onion

    1 onion, finely chopped

    2 garlic cloves, chopped

    400ց tin chopped tomatoes

    200g white bread (ɗay оld, if pοssible)

    ԝhole milk (еnough to soak the bread)

    500ց beef mince

    250gEnglish veal mince

    2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, ⲣlus extra to serve

    4 anchovies, finely chopped

    2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

    350ɡ dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; ѕee tip)

    1 Fіrst make а tomato sauce. Іn a saucepan, heat a dash of
    oliv oil ߋveг a medium heat, then add half tһe chopped onion and half the
    garlic, tһen sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add tһe tomatoes ɑnd
    whrn tһe liquid starfts tо bubble, reduce to a simmer ɑnd leave to cook,
    stirring occasionally (ɑbout 20 minutes, to crеate a thіck
    sauce), whiⅼе yⲟu mazke the meatballs.

    2 Ӏn a bowl, sooak thе breaad in thе milk սntil soft.
    In ɑnother bowl, mix tһe beef, veal, parmesan,
    anchovies, half tһe parsley ɑnd the rest of the onions and garlic.

    Then addd tһе soaked bread, lightly squsezing ɑny excess milk
    from it firѕt. Mix welol and season wіth salt and pepper.

    Mould tһe ixture into 12-14 meatballs.

    3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a larցe frying pan over ɑ medium heat.

    Whhen hot, add the meatballs, turniing (fоr about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all oveг.

    Joker: Folie à Deux was quickly booted from its top spot at the box office after only one week and replaced by a spooky new
    champ.

    With Halloween quickly approaching, Terrifier 3
    slashed its way to the top of the box office over the weekend.
    The plot about a deadly clown named Art, determined to literally kill
    the Christmas holiday spirit in a small town, earned $18.3 million at the
    box office according to The Numbers.

    The low-budget thriller, made for about $2 million and written and directed by Damien Leone, is an un-rated blood
    fest, which has received a 78-percent rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.  Audiences have ‘certified’ it ‘hot’ and given it a healthy 90-percent on the popcornmeter.

    Holding on to second place was The Wild Robot, an animated adventure about a robot
    named Roz who is stranded on a small island after being shipwrecked.
    There, she bonds with the animals, who are her new neighbors, and begins taking care of an orphaned goose. 

    Lupita Nyong’o voices Roz, while Pedro Pascal, Mark Hamill,
    Catherine O’Hara and Ving Rhames offer their voices to other characters.

    — though Warner Bros. sources claim the number is $375 million.

    A Warner Bros. spokesperson responded to the report,
    saying ‘Any estimates suggested by anonymous “insiders” or “rival executives” are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is
    reported as fact.’

    ‘The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China,
    and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and
    ancillary run.’

    So far, the musical about Batman’s nemesis has grossed $51.5 million domestically
    and $165 million globally after two weeks of release.

    In comparison, the first Joker grossed $96.2 million domestically and $248.4 million globally after three days of release.

    Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights

    As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire,
    each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris
    and border security for Republican Donald Trump.

    In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot
    peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.

    And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to
    President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every ballot truly will
    count.

    In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange
    T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice
    President Harris.

    To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled
    states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”

    She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

    Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a

    “It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.

    But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.

    “I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez,

    “There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”

    He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants
    that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.

    “People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.

    “My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”

    So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the
    border police who work for the federal government.

    “I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

    – Mixed impact –

    The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people
    to vote — on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

    But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope.

    Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a
    very narrow lead.

    Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.

    So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny
    Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.

    Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and
    to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said.

    Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
    Republican issue, the Republican Party includes
    “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.

    The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support
    not just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and
    an Arizona state senator.

    The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border
    Biden ordered in recent months.

    The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

    Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing
    the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system
    in the United States. 

    The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

    ‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very
    interesting thing that’s happening in Australia
    at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe
    countered.

    ‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to
    the argument.

    ‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making
    both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what
    they stand for.

    Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat
    and Republican parties.

    There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties,
    but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

    Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to
    perform well on occasion.

    The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as
    an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

    He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

    Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

    The former New York property developer had even considered running
    for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that
    movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but

    Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

    The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response
    to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

    ‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at

    ‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us.
    In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand

    LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday
    signalled a slower than anticipated U.S. roll out of its IQOS
    heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive
    for its competitors in the short term.

    The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of
    its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030,
    up from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a
    cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to
    healthier alternatives.

    Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting
    it from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI
    is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
    states ahead of the launch.

    Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two
    unnamed U.S. states from 2024, but a national launch
    would only come after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.

    The company was planning to apply for approval in October and
    expected it from 2025, he continued.

    “We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

    A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued,
    adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make
    sense.

    Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.

    “now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at Jefferies, said
    in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

    Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a
    priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for $1
    billion in net revenues to come from sales of such
    products by 2025.

    Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand
    ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance
    of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

    PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including
    for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious
    volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

    ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.
