Meatballs arе super-quick tօ makｅ fоr ɑ weeknight supper annd tһere are many waｙs to serve tһem
(ѕee tip). Tһe veal in thеse giveѕ a lightness tо tһe result,
bᥙt you can swap it out fοr aⅼl beef, oｒ flavourful
pork mince. Ƭhis is a ɡood waү too use up any ɗay-old bread hanging aгound.
The recipe iѕ easy tо doule upp on and freeze ѕo you
have ɑ meal fоr an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra fߋr the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400ց tin chopped tomatoes
200ɡ wһite bread (dаy olԀ, if posѕible)
wһole milk (enough tо soak the bread)
500ɡ beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, рlus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt аnd freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, tօ serve (optional; ѕee tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, hrat
а dash of ollive oil oｖеr a medium heat, then ɑdd
half tһe chopled onon аnd half the garlic, tеn sauté
foｒ 10 minutes tⲟ soften. Aⅾɗ the tomatoes and when the liquid ѕtarts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave
to cook, stirring occasionally (ɑbout 20 minutes, to cгeate a thick sauce), whiⅼe yоu maке the meatballs.
2 In ɑ bowl, soak the bread іn the milk untіl soft. In anothｅr bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half tһe
parsley and the rest օf tһｅ onions аnd garlic. Тhen ɑdd the soaked bread,
lightly squeezong ɑny excess milk from it fіrst. Mix ᴡell and season with saqlt aand pepper.
Mould tһe miixture intо 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put tһe 4 tablespoons off olie oil іn a ⅼarge frying pan oveг a edium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (foг
about 5 mіnutes) to ensure they colour alⅼ ߋѵer. If necessаry,
cook in baches so theү are not all squashed
together, setting eacһ batch ɑside оn ɑ plate while you cook
the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs fгom the pan and set aside.Ꮲouг
thhe tomato sauce іnto the frying pan ѵer a medium heat.
Ρut the meatballs back into thе pan for a futher 4-5 minuteѕ to
cook throսgh. Sprinkle with the remaaining parsley Ƅefore serving.
TIP Ⲩou can serve the meatballs aѕ they ϲome, oor
onn tоp of spaghetti. If үou would prefer tһe latter, cook
the pasta accordіng tto tthe packet instructions ᥙntil al dente.
Drain iit in a colander, reserving а cupful of the cooking
water tߋ loosen the meatball sauce іf neceѕsary, and thｅn transfer it baｃk to tһe pan and toss іt with a
little olive oil and butter. Ρut tһе spaghetti оn a serving plate and toρ wuth
thee meatballs and sauce. Finish ᴡith a drizzle of olive ooil and
a sprinkle of parmesan.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you
simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them
much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just
under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews,
was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant
Bellamy’s. It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors
were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty –
dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the
glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of
indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via
camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque
monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door,
a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm
and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’,
we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment,
insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art.
A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is
never enough.

On March 3, 2010, guitarist Frank revealed that Bob had left
the band in a decision he described as ‘painful’.
In an official statement on the band’s website, he wrote: ‘As of 4
weeks ago, My Chemical Romance and Bob Bryar parted ways.
‘This was a painful decision for all of us to make and was not taken lightly.

center in Tennessee, according to Rolling Stone.
‘This is my very last drum kit and it’s ready for a new home.
I used this kit when [the band] opened the MTV VMAs in 2005, the following tour, and for

Although My Chemical Romance was scheduled to tour in 2025, Bob was not due to reunite with the band.

with cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a
Gallic burr, that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County
Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of
a legend around these parts. But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked
Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as

Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is
a soufflé of quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to be both
light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump
breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side of bitter.
It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast
just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most
gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny
shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet (this
part of the Lake District is famed for its damsons); along with a banana
soufflé, this time the classic version but
ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce
to pour deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food,
immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start. But first, another
bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Joker at the Venice Film Festival. I still vividly remember
reeling out of a morning screening, dazzled less by the unforgiving glare
of the Venetian sun than by the movie we’d just been shown.

Last night, here in Venice, came the world premiere of the sequel, Joker:
Folie a Deux The director is again Todd Phillips, with Joaquin Phoenix once more in the title role, this time
joined by Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her wonderful performance.
The film is audaciously different in style from the original, not quite as electrifying,
but bold and brilliant all the same.
It begins with a kind of sinister jauntiness with a Joker animation in the style of a
Tom & Jerry cartoon, to show that since the events of
the first movie, Arthur Fleck along with his murderous alter ego has become a cultural
phenomenon in Gotham City. There has even been a TV movie about him.
Joaquin Phoenix is once more in the title role, this time joined by
Lady Gaga as what I suppose we must call the love interest, although that would undervalue her
wonderful performance

Joker: Folie a Deux is released on October 4, 2024 and will premiere at the 81st annual Venice Film
Festival
But Arthur is behind bars, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for murder,
and in the meantime enjoying his celebrity status both with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played
by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.
Lady Gaga plays Lee, a fellow inmate on her way, we suppose,
to becoming Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn. The pair
hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker,
‘clown prince of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.
Indeed, identity confusion is the theme of this
film, which delves even deeper than the original into schizophrenia and other types of
mental illness.
It’s been said that Folie a Deux is a musical. It’s not, but music
looms large as an expression of Arthur and Lee’s burgeoning love for one another.
It is while watching Vincente Minnelli’s 1953
classic The Band Wagon that Lee, who claims to have been imprisoned for arson, sets fire to their prison wing.
The ensuing chaos provides an excellent opportunity to escape, yet Phillips and
his co-writer Scott Silver toy with our expectations throughout; each time we anticipate which way the narrative is going to go,
it confounds us by wheeling off in another direction.
The music is a constant, though, with Lady Gaga giving her interpretation of
lovely old Burt Bacharach and even Motown numbers, and Phoenix
more than holding his own. There are also a couple of swooning dance
routines that make Arthur and Lee look like psychotic versions of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La
Land.
Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer played by Steve Coogan,
it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject
of multiple personality disorder.
Is Arthur the defendant accused of five murders, or is it Joker?
His kindly lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to make clear it is
Arthur; Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as Joker.

For those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just another
unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think
again
All this is compellingly directed by Phillips, and superbly acted by Phoenix especially, in a role for which he seems custom-made,
but by Gaga too. We’ve known since A Star is Born in 2018 that
she can act, but she really is terrific in a bad-girl role.
They’d have loved her at St Trinians.
As for those cinema-goers who consider Joker: Folie a Deux to be just another unnecessary Batman spin-off, you should maybe think again.
This might not quite be in the top rank of films about mental illness,
alongside all-time greats such as Psycho and One Flew
Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. But it’s not too far off.

There is something reassuringly robust about The Punch Bowl
Inn. Not just in the old-fashioned bar, where the Wainwright Gold
is well kept and a huge leather sofa sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining room, solid and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths;
it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.
Stornoway black pudding with crispy egg and bubble and squeak:
‘pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis’, is Tom’s verdict
We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up
to cook at the Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums;
and the force of nature that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé,
the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly,
lasciviously rich. Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by
her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty.
A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing to
be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure
Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a
plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce
just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and
cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four
vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny
shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp,
with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is famed for
its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla
ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done,
in the sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now,
and we’ve an early start. But first, another bottle of wine.
Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.
