Obasanjo Is Jealous Because Buhari Beat Him To A New Record In The Nation’s Development Process – Garba Shehu

The Presidency added that Obasanjo’s tenure as President represented the dark days of Nigeria’s democracy due to a slew of assaults on the constitution.

Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu has taken a swipe at former president, Olusegun Obasanjo after he said that the Buhari-led administration has moved Nigeria from ‘frying pan to fire’ and from mountain top to valley.

In his letter released on January 1, 2023, the former Nigerian leader stated that the last seven and a half years ”have no doubt been eventful and stressful years for many Nigerians.”

His letter in part reads;

 “I am constrained to write this letter to all Nigerians especially young Nigerians, friends of Nigeria globally as well as our development partners because of the gravity, responsibility and implications of the collective decision Nigerians, both young and old, will be making within the next two months.

The last seven and a half years have no doubt been eventful and stressful years for many Nigerians. We have moved from frying pan to fire and from mountain top to the valley.

Our leaders have done their best, but their best had turned out to be not the best for Nigeria and Nigerians at home and abroad. For most Nigerians, it was hell on earth.

Those of us who are alive should thank God for His mercies, brace ourselves for the remaining few months of this administration and pray and work very hard for an immediate better future – future of liberation, restoration and great hope and expectation.”

In a statement released on Monday evening, the Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, opined that Obasanjo is ”jealous” of President Buhari.

According to Garba, President Buhari is ahead of Obasanjo in all fields of national development as leader of Nigeria. The Presidency added that Obasanjo’s tenure as President represented the “dark days of Nigeria’s democracy due to a slew of assaults on the constitution.”

His Statement Reads;

”Former President Obasanjo is so well known to all that no one needs to describe who he is.

But, four things we will like to say:

One is that he will not stop attacking President Muhammadu Buhari because the former President won’t stop being jealous of anyone who beats him to a new record in the nation’s development process.

President Buhari is ahead of Chief Obasanjo in all fields of national development and to do that is cardinal sin to Obasanjo whose hallucinations tell him that he is the best ever to lead Nigeria and there will never be another one better than him.

President Buhari just completed the world-class edifice that is the Second Niger Bridge after three decades of failed promises. It is now awaiting commissioning.

Obasanjo laid the sod for the bridge in his first term as elected President and work never started.

When he sought re-election for his second term in office, he returned to the site to turn the sod for the bridge the second time. When the Obi of Onitsha, forthright and scholarly, reminded him that he had done this in the past, Obasanjo told the foremost Southeast traditional ruler that he was a liar, in the full presence of the Chiefs and Oracles in his palace.

Obasanjo lied to the Southeast to get their votes. President Buhari didn’t get their votes but built the bridge because he believed it is the right thing to do.

Two, President Buhari had been bagging awards and encomiums for trying to do that which the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria says a leader should do: serve one, or a maximum of two terms and go.

President Buhari has been stating and restating that he will supervise a better election than the one that brought him to office and to leave as and when due.

Having tried tenure elongation and failed, Obasanjo’s fictitious mind must be telling him that he is the one under attack.

But he is not on President Buhari’s radar because experience has shown, especially lately in West Africa where there have been at least three successful coups and many other failed attempts, that third term or tenure elongation is a recipe for political instability.

Furthermore, the totality of African leaders appointed President Buhari the Anti-Corruption Champion of the continent.

You can’t be an anti-corruption champion if “you meddled and bent the rules,” carrying the putrid responsibility of what happened to national assets in the name of privatization as documented by the Nigerian Senate in 2011.

As an insight, the Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria, ALSCON, which was set up with $3.2 billion, was sold to a Russian firm, Russal, for a paltry $130million. Delta Steel, which was set up in 2005, at a cost of $1.5billion, was sold to Global Infrastructure for just $30million.

ALSCON got back $120million for the dredging of the Imo River, which was never carried out.

Three, which is linked to the one above is the growing profile of President Buhari as the Champion of Democracy not only at home and in the West African subregion but the African continent as whole.

As President, Obasanjo destabilized internal democracy by orchestrating impeachment after impeachment of governors who were not compliant with his highly imperial administration.

As we said sometime back, Mr. Obasanjo’s tenure, 1999-2007, represented the dark days of Nigeria’s democracy due to a slew of assaults on the constitution.

The former president deployed federal machinery to remove governors Joshua Dariye, Rashidi Ladoja, Peter Obi, Chris Ngige and Ayo Fayose from office. They were the then governors of Plateau, Oyo, Anambra, Anambra and Ekiti, respectively, unjustly removed using the police and secret service under his control.

Under him, a five-man legislature met at 6:00 am and “impeached” Governor Dariye in Plateau; 18 members out of 32 removed Governor Ladoja of Oyo from office; in Anambra, APGA’s Governor Obi was equally impeached at 5:00 a.m. by members who did not meet the two-thirds required by the constitution.

Lawmaking powers of the Rivers State legislature were transferred to the federal parliament to punish Governor Amaechi for shifting his political alliance.

Moreover, he damned the Supreme Court and unlawfully held back Lagos State revenues due from federal sources on account of his pettiness against Governor Bola Tinubu.

On the other hand, in Washington a few weeks ago, the US President Joe Biden at a meeting with African Heads of States and Government described President Buhari as a champion of democracy and role model for the leaders of African states.

 Clearly, Obasanjo has become even more jealous by adopting a vengeful attitude.

 Four, to say that “frying pan to fire” is the situation in Nigeria at this time should be read to mean a personal experience to him and we know what that means.

“Hell” for Obasanjo is when a President, any President that comes after him refuses to be his own puppet, to do as he wishes on all matters and at all times.

He then keeps attacking out of frustration.

Obasanjo’s vengeful attitude towards President Buhari is the height of selfishness and little short of moral squalor.”

    The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and
    uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive patterns with
    multiple colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for
    members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at
    least three different Fair Isle designs.

    Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung,

    The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a
    sharp rally to a seven-week high last week.

    Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last
    trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close
    at 7.066. Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank
    of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band,
    at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

    China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
    13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
    The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar strength,
    but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

    China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said UBS strategists led by Rohit
    Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term risk reward is unattractive.
    “Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the
    strategists said.

    Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting
    additional stimulus measures that could help further lift China asset sentiment.

    Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.
    2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.

    The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar, up about 0.09%
    in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

    solid and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths; it’s in the menu, too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the magnificent local Lake District larder.

    Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis’, is Tom’s verdict

    We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero, and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has
    invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show;
    also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature
    that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend
    around these parts. But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked
    Mrs Kirkham’s cheese soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
    Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great
    cheeses, and this is a soufflé of quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally splendid,
    managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of
    Lewis.

    There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck
    à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce
    just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat potato
    fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb,
    four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.

    Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully sharp, with damson sorbet
    (this part of the Lake District is famed for its damsons);
    along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but
    ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce
    to pour deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
    It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
    But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this
    are too rare to be rushed.

    for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

    Japanese Princess Yuriko has died aged 101 after her health deteriorated recently, palace officials said.

    Yuriko, who outlived her husband and three sons, was the wife of wartime Emperor Hirohito’s brother and the oldest member of
    the imperial family. She died on Friday at a Tokyo hospital, the Imperial Household Agency said.

    Yuriko’s death means the total number of people making up Japan’s royal family has waned to just 16.

    The palace did not announce the cause of death, but Japanese media said
    she died of pneumonia.

    Born in 1923 as an aristocrat, Yuriko married at age 18 to Prince Mikasa, the
    younger brother of Hirohito and the great-uncle of current Emperor
    Naruhito, months before the start of the Second World War.

    She has recounted living in a shelter with her husband
    and their baby daughter after their residence was burned down in the US
    fire bombings of Tokyo in the final months of the war in 1945.

    Yuriko raised five children and supported Mikasa’s research into ancient
    Near Eastern history, while also serving her official duties and taking part
    in philanthropic activities, including promotion of
    maternal and child health.

    Her death reduces Japan’s rapidly dwindling imperial family to 16 people, including four men, as the country faces the
    dilemma of how to maintain the royal family while conservatives in the governing party insist
    on retaining male-only succession.

    The 1947 Imperial House Law, which largely preserves conservative pre-war family values, allows only males to take the throne and forces female royal family members who
    marry commoners to lose their royal status.

    The youngest male member of the imperial family, Prince Hisahito
    – the nephew of Emperor Naruhito – is currently the last heir apparent, posing a major problem
    for a system that does not allow empresses.

    The government is debating how to keep succession stable without relying
    on women.

    Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, visiting South America to attend the Asia Pacific
    Economic Cooperation and Group of 20 summits, issued a statement expressing ‘heartfelt condolences’.

    ‘I cannot help but feel saddened to hear of the loss.
    I extend my heartfelt condolences along with other Japanese citizens,’ Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said in a statement.

    Yuriko had lived a healthy life as a centenarian before suffering a stroke and pneumonia
    in March.

    She enjoyed exercise in the morning while watching a daily fitness programme on television, the
    Imperial Household Agency said.

    She also continued to read multiple newspapers
    and magazines and enjoyed watching news and
    baseball on TV. On sunny days, Yuriko was
    said to enjoy sitting in the palace garden, where she was wheeled in her
    wheelchair.

    Yuriko was hospitalised after her stroke and had been in and out of intensive care since then. Her overall condition deteriorated over
    the past week, the Imperial Household Agency said.

    It comes after Emperor Naruhito of Japan admitted his family
    is running out of heirs amid an ongoing crisis for the monarchy.

    Japan’s strict laws of succession forbid women from
    ascending to the Chrysanthemum Throne and force
    them to give up their titles if they marry commoners.

    Meanwhile, many of the royal family are ageing – with
    eight members over 60, while only four members of the family are male. 

    Speaking in June ahead of a state visit to Britain with his wife Empress Masako, Emperor
    Naruhito, 64, made a rare comment about the crisis
    facing the imperial household.

    He said: ‘The number of male members of the imperial family is decreasing, they are ageing,
    and female members of the imperial family leave the imperial family upon marriage.’

    If the marriage was to a prince, they could stay within the family – the trouble is that there are no fellow male royals for them to wed.

    ‘Due to these factors, the number of members of the imperial family
    who can take on public duties is decreasing compared to before,
    ‘ he continued.

    ‘This is a problem that relates to the future of the imperial family, but I would like to refrain from commenting on matters related
    to the [legal] system.’

    His comments make for a rare insight into the royal dynasty, as emperors have avoided discussing items of political importance since
    Japan’s defeat in the Second World War.

    The slimmed down state of the Japanese monarchy is partly due to male primogeniture rules,
    meaning only male members of the royal family
    can succeed the throne.

    Only four out of 16 members of Naruhito’s family are male, following Emperor Emeritus
    Akihito’s abdication in 2019.

    Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako share only one
    child, Princess Aiko, who was born in 2001 after fertility treatment.
    However, she cannot take the country’s throne.

    This means the heir to the throne is Naruhito’s younger brother, Crown Prince Fumihito,
    58. His son, 17-year-old Prince Hisahito and Naruhito’s uncle Prince
    Hitachi, 88, are the only other male figures of the
    dynasty.

    Japan’s crisis is partly due to the royals ageing.

    Fumihito shares a daughter, Princess Kako, 29, with his wife Crown Princess Kiko, 57 – but she is also not allowed to inherit the throne. 

    Fumihito also has two other children – Prince Hisahito of Akishino, 18, and Mako Komuro,
    33 – who gave up her title after marrying her husband Kei Komuro.

    The country’s strict laws of succession forbid women from ascending to the Chrysanthemum
    Throne and force them to give up their titles if they marry commoners –
    seen most recently in Princess Mako’s wedding. 

    However, 90 per cent of the public support a change to
    the law to allow women to ascend the throne, according to a
    recent poll. 

    Conservative members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party oppose
    the changes and they are yet to be instated. 

    In addition, the Japanese monarchy are ageing – with
    eight of them being over 60. These means
    that royal duties are spread thinly between the increasingly few numbers of working royals. 

    In Japan, these include receiving dignitaries, taking part in Shinto
    ceremonies and visiting schools and hospitals.

    Earlier this year, Japanese politicians debated solutions to resolve the crisis, which did not include allowing women to rule. 

    Instead, options included allowing princesses to remain in the royal family after marriage and bringing back descendants of former cadet branches
    into the fold, who lost their royal status after
    World War Two.  

    This still would not increase the number of heirs, as the LDP insists princess’ children should not be
    allowed to rule. 

    Princess Mako is the most recent example of female royals who have given up royal life in order to
    marry. 

    In October 2021, she gave up her royal title to marry her commoner boyfriend in a move that sharply
    divided public opinion.

    Mako, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and niece of
    reigning Emperor Naruhito, tied the knot with her university sweetheart Kei Komuro,
    a commoner, in Tokyo after an eight-year engagement.

    The low-key ceremony was met with protests, and was held behind closed doors without any
    of the pomp and pageantry of other Japanese royal weddings, which traditionally
    include a reception and banquet. 

    In November last year, Emperor Naruhito called for a review of official duties because
    members are either leaving due to age or marrying a commoner, according to
    the Japan Times.

    ‘It would be difficult to pass on (official duties) if the
    number (of imperial family members) decreases,’ the crown prince told journalists in Tokyo.

    July 23 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International pushed the test-launch of its heated tobacco device,
    IQOS, in the U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its annual
    forecast for the heated tobacco business.

    The pilot was earlier scheduled to run in Austin, Texas, in the second quarter, for which the company reported
    results on the day.

    The company declined to comment on why the launch had been delayed.

    Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand its portfolio
    of alternatives to traditional combustible cigarettes amid stricter regulations and falling smoking rates
    in some markets.

    The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the
    United States is also facing resistance from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of
    misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last week.

    The company also awaits market authorization from the U.S.
    Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS
    ILUMA device, which it expects by the second half
    of 2025.

    A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with
    Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was “slightly greater” than previously
    assumed.

    This led the company to temper its expectations
    for volume growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full
    year, down from between 14% and 16% expected
    earlier.

    However, Philip Morris topped quarterly expectations and raised its annual
    sales and profit forecasts, betting on demand for its Zyn nicotine pouches, as well as higher cigarette pricing.
