LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s
biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.
“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,” he told journalists
ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024,
an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this
year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was
the weakest among its large euro zone peers last year with a
0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the
economy to growth.
“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative was just a
first step for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order,
or to put them back in order where necessary.
“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”
Lindner said he could not comment on the French
budget plans because he had not had the chance to talk
with his French colleagues yet, but he would do so
on Monday evening.
“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.
“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged
the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still
have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October 2019.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered in competition like the first movie and even got a 12-minute standing ovation.
But the homecoming glow was short-lived, and the fragile

from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were
the audience reviews: Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave
the film a deadly D CinemaScore. Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better.
It got a meager half star out of five possible.
‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst
for Comscore. ‘The biggest issue of all is the reported
budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film
to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200
million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415
IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing
its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million.
In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its second weekend,
bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One
landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White
Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but
Joker’s start is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office
deficit.
The sequel has already been the subject of many
think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of
the first movie
Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to make something as ‘audacious’
as the first film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into
the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved further
into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the
first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song
and dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released
a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some
who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first
movie. In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’
But fans often ignore the advice of critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic book characters
on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences
in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the theater.
They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with
the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted
to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of much
discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the wrong
type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the
fuss was about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations,
including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated
film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool
& Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday
at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one of the stars
of Purple Rain during the making of the film, Susan Moonsie.
Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004
Grammy Awards, performing a medley that included
his iconic 1984 single Purple Rain.
Their duet also included her fan favorite number Crazy In Love, which saw him accompany her on the electric guitar.
Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his appraisal of Beyonce’s musical abilities when they worked together.
‘I was really curious as to how much she knew musically,
and I was really pleased to find out that she knew a lot about scales – Mixolydian scales and
Egyptian styles and different things like that,’ he said.
‘And I was just trying to show her some chords on the piano and help
her to respect the fact that if she learns piano à la Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles and things like that, the
sky’s the limit as to what she could do, ’cause she’s so
very talented.’
Prince died of an accidental overdose in 2016 at the age of just 57.

Oct 20 (Reuters) – U.S. cigarette maker Altria Group Inc said on Wednesday industry peer Philip
Morris International Inc has agreed to pay $2.7 billion for the exclusive right to sell
IQOS heated tobacco products in the United States.
IQOS is a smokeless tobacco heating device that was developed by Philip Morris and
sold in the United States by Altria until the U.S. trade regulator banned
the import and sale of the product last year following patent claims from rival
R.J. Reynolds.
Philip Morris is looking to
overturn the ban
.
Altria, which sells cigarette brands like Marlboro
in the United States, was spun off from Philip Morris International
in 2008 when the company wanted to separate its U.S.
and overseas businesses.
Altria said one of its subsidiaries had an option to extend the
IQOS contract until April 2029 after it had reached certain milestones.
However, Philip Morris disagreed with Altria’s position.
“The parties were unable to reach a long-term agreement and decided to enter into the Agreement to transition and ultimately conclude their relationship,” Altria said in a statement.
Philip Morris, which reports quarterly results later on Thursday,
aims to resume supply of IQOS products in the United States
by the first half of 2023.
Altria still holds the rights to sell IQOS in the United States until May 2024,
after which it transitions to Philip Morris.
“We are ready to invest behind IQOS to bring it to market at scale across the U.S.,” Philip
Morris Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak said.
Altria said it has already received $1 billion from Philip Morris and will receive
the remainder by July 2023.
Separately, Philip Morris
raised its buyout offer
for Swedish Match AB in a last-ditch effort to get shareholder
support for its $16 billion move into the fast-growing market

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’
during making of the $200million flop film, a new report has claimed.
The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was
slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a
musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted
nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film,
with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city,
it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because
that guy was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not
include a DC Studios logo.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score
of 31% and a critic score of 32%

A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of the Joker
sequel. while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips,
DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca
and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who
took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told
a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is
kind of a Warner Bros. movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged
in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if
the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with
the budget remaining static.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical

Todd. And the one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the
fan expectations are, you’re going to fail.
Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at the Venice
Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported
the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie
history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night.
It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget.
The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters
on Friday, October 4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office, per The Hollywood
Reporter.
Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the
2019 film, while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn).
However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic
book movie.
Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this
year and also received terrible reviews — holds
a higher score with a C+.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a
critic score of 32%.
The sequel is projected to rake in less that
$50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening
weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number
has since drastically dropped.
Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters
– and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the global box office.
The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of
between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À
Deux to around $200 million.
The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both
critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival.
Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal
of the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy
Award for Best Original Score.
The sequel also screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute
standing ovation, per Deadline.
A source directly involved with the film said:

Deux didn’t live up to expectations, others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’
Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but said it lacked any thrill.
The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best
remembered as one of the most subversive and original
films of the last decade, while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as
bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.
Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the
movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.
Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to
bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her.
Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the movie proves
‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

This is actually pretty contested. If you go by the seven “traditional” continents (North
America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica), New Zealand wouldn’t be on any continent.
It is, however, part of Oceania, which is a large geographic region (very similar to a continent) including Australia, New Zealand, and about 10,000 other islands in the Pacific Ocean.
The coolest answer to this question, though, is that New Zealand is on its own continent of Zealandia.
Some scientists argue that what we think of as the
islands of New Zealand are just the peaks of the mountains of Zealandia, and the rest of the landmass is submerged.
This theory isn’t widely recognized, but it is pretty neat.

pick up nominations for the 83rd annual Golden Globe awards.
Lopez’s performance in the sports biopic Unstoppable was ignored as was Streep’s recurring role in the hit series,

Golden Globe nomination predictions recently compiled by Variety.

also failed to earn a nod; the film, which flopped

Jon M. Chu and Ridley Scott were also surprise omissions
from the Best Director – Motion Picture category, despite respective blockbusters Wicked
and Gladiator II enjoying enormous box office success.
The filmmaker behind Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve, also failed to receive a nod in the directing category.
Saoirse Ronan was another notable snub, failing to receive Golden Globe recognition for
her films The Outrun and Blitz. The film Blitz also did not garner

The 82nd Golden Globes will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on January
5, hosted by Nikki Glaser – the first woman to solo host the awards.
While Lopez, Streep, and others were snubbed from the Golden Globes, a slew of other stars and projects did receive nods.
Nominations for the 2025 ceremony were announced Monday morning,
with Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both receiving nominations for their work in the musical film.
Grande – earning her first ever Golden Globe nomination –
features in the category for Best Supporting Female Actor – Motion Picture
nomination courtesy of her role as Galinda Upland in the
fantasy drama.
Lopez’s performance in the sports biopic Unstoppable was ignored

Isabella Rossellini also received a nomination for
her role in Conclave, as does Zoe Saldana – again, for Emilia Perez.
Elsewhere Demi Moore has been acknowledged for her starring role
alongside Qualley in The Substance, earning herself
nomination for Best Female Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy.
Also garnering a nod, Grande’s Wicked co-star Arivo has been richly rewarded for her role as green-skinned witch-in-the-making Elphaba.
Jon M. Chu did not receive a directing nod for Wicked, however stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both did
earn nominations

Menendez) and Javier Bardem both garnered nods
Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice performance was also unable to cast a spell on the Golden Globe decision makers
They will face tough competition in one of the ceremony’s
biggest categories, with Zendaya also named for Challengers alongside Amy Adams for Nightbitch,
Mikey Madison for Anora and Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Perez.
British star Eddie Redmayne was also among the
early contenders after being named in the category for Best Television Actor in a Drama Series for his
starring role in Netflix hit The Day Of The Jackal.
The actor faces stiff competition from Jake Gyllenhaal for Presumed Innocent, while
Donald Glover also wins a nomination for his role in Mr.
& Mrs. Smith.
There’s another British face on the list, with Gary Oldman’s
starring role in Disney+ series Slow Horses earning him a richly deserved nomination, while Hiroyuki Sanada and Billy
Bob Thornton win respective nods for Shōgun and Landman.
British Netflix drama Baby Reindeer has also been acknowledged, with the Richard Gadd written show featuring in the
category for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture and its lead actress Jessica Gunning named as Best Supporting
Female Actor – Television.
The show will compete alongside the hugely popular Ripley, controversial biopic Monsters: The Lyle
And Erik Menendez Story, True Detective: Night Country, Ripley and The Penguin.
During the upcoming awards ceremony, Cheers legend Ted Danson will receive the Carol Burnett Award for those who
have “made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen” and Viola Davis will be handed the Cecil B.
DeMille Award for achievement in film.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.
Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas
jumper (especially the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget
Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for après-ski), the Fair
Isle jumper has now become somewhat of a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create
those distinctive patterns with multiple colours. It was brought into vogue
by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s,
and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members
of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton,
whose jumper collection includes at least three different
Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair
Isle vest by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for
Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear
brand Cooking Apple, and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black
leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits
for AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.
If, as in our case, that £1,885 cashmere turtleneck from Loro Piana is a little out of your
budget, there are countless options on the high street.
The cropped cardi from Hush certainly caught our attention, as did the Fair Isle knit
that was featured in the John Lewis Christmas advert.
