    Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a
    Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and
    upgrades.

    However that characterization of the relationship was at
    odds with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.

    In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free
    tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

    When asked about about their relationship on Sunday
    Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional
    capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime
    Minister. 

    ‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline … I had the same relationship with him that
    I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese
    said.

    That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

    Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at
    the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.

    In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one
    arm around the prime minister and the other
    around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.

    Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr
    Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes
    23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

    Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet with one arm around the prime
    minister and the other around his partner, Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary
    event last year

    Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting
    into laughter.

    Even when Scott Morrison was PM,  Mr Joyce
    enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr Albanese as the pair stood close together at
    the launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018. 

    During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.

    Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership
    to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce
    refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

    ‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,
    ‘ Mr Joyce said. 

    However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.

    It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that
    Ms Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

    Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22
    upgrades from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former
    airline boss for them. 

    Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his
    various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately
    funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los
    Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for
    holidays.

    Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of
    Mr Joyce. 

    Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted
    Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.

    ‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio
    asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the
    Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else
    because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

    It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of
    the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

    The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades
    on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW city of Newcastle.

    ‘The only discussions that I can recall with
    Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia to
    Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

    ‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’

    Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how
    confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce
    for upgrades.

    ‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

    Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block
    UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s
    office had nothing to do with the decision.

    ‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through
    the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.

    He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything
    changed’ to stop it dead in tracks. 

     Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or
    any Labor colleagues.

    Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial
    Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for his former wife Carmel
    Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has  questioned the alleged personal requests Mr Albanese made to Mr Joyce  while in his various
    parliamentary jobs

    Mr Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s personal travel agent.’

    ‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
    They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.

    It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

    ‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of
    dollars worth of free upgrades to business class?

    The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister
    and prime minister under a cloud.

    ‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
    Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
    But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie
    enjoying the perks of public office.’

    Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking
    1700 staff during Covid. 

    The sacking has since been ruled illegal by
    Federal Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds
    of thousands in compensation payouts. 

    The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil
    Mitchell. 

    ‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

    ‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a bestie?
    Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

    simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course, that
    the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
    There may have been other things on the menu, but
    no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price,
    at just under £150, is ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to
    be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.

    Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
    But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened
    to the great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously
    lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft,
    crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud
    soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
    The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad
    in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
    Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover
    in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur
    that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of
    the noisily, glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma
    that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
    Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study
    in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises
    them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is
    ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat
    this every day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
    One taste is never enough.

    A video posted by a Turkish journalist on X shows a group of released prisoners running through
    the streets. One asks the cameraman: ‘I have been in prison for ten years.
    What happened?’

    Another man who saw prisoners being freed said some had been there so
    long they thought former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein – who was executed in 2006 –
    had liberated them.

    Nothing more completely embodied the barbarous sadism of Bashar
    al-Assad’s regime than his prisons.

    They were both a symbol and a means of the regime’s brutality and its
    oppressive tactics. The result of its systematic campaign to arrest anyone it viewed as an enemy – be it protesters, human rights defenders, political dissidents, doctors who treated
    demonstrators or opposition figures, as well as family members of all the above.

    The prisons are, in the end, monuments to state violence and the silencing of opposition. Torture, rape, murder: the state meted them out indiscriminately
    to men, women and children. They are infamous not just in Syria but across the Middle East – and the scale
    of their atrocities is staggering.

    The Syrian Network for Human Rights claims that since the beginning of the
    Syrian revolution in March 2011, over 157,000 people remain under arrest or have been forcibly disappeared – including
    5,274 children and 10,221 women. It also claims over 15,000 have died under torture in that time.

    The sadism is sickening. New footage from inside one of the jails shows a body-press,
    medieval in its barbarity, that seems to have been used to break bones
    and execute prisoners.

    The human rights network documented 72 different methods of regime torture.
    They include electrocuting genitals or hanging weights from them; burning with oil, metal rods, gunpowder or
    flammable pesticides; crushing heads between a wall and the prison cell’s door; inserting needles or metal pins into bodies;
    depriving prisoners of clothes, bathing, toilet facilities and
    so on.

    Mariam Khleif, who was imprisoned for providing medical supplies to
    rebels, was kept in a three-foot square basement cell that held six other
    women.

    Guards hung her from the walls and beat her. Once, she
    claims, she saw a prisoner complain of hunger only
    for the guards to stuff his face with excrement.

    Sexual violence was endemic. Mariam was repeatedly raped.
    ‘At midnight, they would take the beautiful girls to Colonel Suleiman [Juma, head of the Syrian state security’s Branch 320 in Hama] to rape,’ says the human rights network.

    He and his friends would assault them in a bedroom adjoining his office that was decorated with Assad’s
    photo. They would also splash arak – a potent liquor – on the victims.

    As the prisons empty, Syrians everywhere are desperate for news of loved ones – many who have been missing
    for years.

    The so-called ‘Caesar’ files, a collection of over 55,000 photographs
    smuggled out of Syria in 2013 by a former military police photographer, document the systematic torture
    and deaths of more than 11,000 detainees in Syrian government custody between March 2011
    and August 2013.

    It is just a glimpse into the factory-level production of mass murder and torture Syrians faced
    under Assad.

    Perhaps the apotheosis of Assad’s industrial-style brutality was Sednaya Prison.

    Located outside Damascus, it sits on a hill and spans 1.4
    sq km – equivalent to 184 football stadiums – and is surrounded by two minefields.
    A 2017 Amnesty International report found thousands were killed in mass hangings in Sednaya, which it labelled a ‘Human Slaughterhouse’.

    Between 20 and 50 people were killed every week, usually on Monday
    and Wednesday nights. Amnesty estimated that between 5,000 and 13,000 people were executed between September 2011 and December 2015.

    Prisoners were sent to a ‘trial’ at one of the two field courts
    at the military police HQ in the al-Qaboun neighbourhood of Damascus.
    These trials would last ‘one to three minutes’ and were
    no more than a parody of due process.

    On execution day, prisoners were told they were being transferred to a civilian prison elsewhere but
    were instead brought to a basement and severely beaten, before being transferred to another detention facility inside Sednaya to be hanged.

    Those who survived endured intense suffering. They were blindfolded constantly,
    able to hear the ubiquitous sound of beatings and screams reverberate through vents and pipes.
    So constant was the violence that the prisoners became
    able to distinguish between the sounds of belts and electric
    cables on flesh, and the difference between bodies being punched, kicked or beaten against the wall.

    Some victims were held underground in freezing confinement cells designed for one person with dimensions of 8 ft by 5 ft,
    but which held up to 15 at a time.

    And for the condemned of Sednaya the torture hasn’t stopped.
    The Damascus Countryside Governorate has had to go on social media to ask people to provide the codes to
    electronic underground doors to free the ‘more than 100,000 detainees who can be seen on CCTV monitors’.

    Now, though, the prisons are being emptied. And while large numbers of prisoners are innocent opponents of the regime,
    a contingent are radical Islamists. And the potential release of these prisoners, of course, presents
    a danger to the West.

    Then there is Al-Hawl refugee camp, located in northern Syria, which houses around 50,000 prisoners,
    including British ISIS bride Shamima Begum. While the
    exact number of jihadists within the camp is unclear, reports suggest
    that ISIS exerts significant influence over parts of the camp, using it for indoctrination.

    This part of Syria is run by the Kurdish forces who now fear that the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army could advance on to its territory.
    If this happens, it will no longer have the resources to oversee the camp – leading to another
    possible jihadi exodus, many of whom are British and could head our way.
    We must continue to support our Kurdish allies as much as we can.

    For now, however, it is a great day for Syrians who suffered for so
    long under the tyrannical yet hapless Assad, as I discuss in this week’s episode of the Mail’s weekly global affairs podcast
    90 Seconds To Midnight. After 13 years their revolution is finally victorious,
    let us hope for good.

    The follow-up to the Oscar-winning 2019 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn), faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped at the box office.

    Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie, said Todd Philips’s new film
    has ‘no plot’ and admitted he knew it was ‘going to bomb’ while filming. 

    Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film
    ever made.

    ‘I think what happened, after the first Joker, there was a
    lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.

    This was loved by the wrong kinds of people.
    This sent the wrong kind of message. Male rage! Nihilism!
    All these think pieces.

    and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap and I’d go,
    ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This
    is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’

    ‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is
    the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not even hate-watchable.
    That’s how terrible it is.’

    Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel took to social media after
    its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

    The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot,
    but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

    Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce
    a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady
    Gaga joining the franchise.

    ‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100%
    as divisive as people are making it out to be.
    I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
    It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

    Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was
    structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

    Todd Phillips‘ sequel has bombed, raking in just under $40 million at the domestic box office, and receiving the lowest CinemaScore in comic book movie history.

    Gaga, 38, is reportedly confused at the lack of love for her
    turn as Harleen Lee Quinzel, aka Harley Quinn,
    alongside Joaquin Phoenix, 49, as the Joker – a role that won him the
    best actor Oscar in 2019 – in the wake of the standing
    ovation it received at the Venice Film Festival last month.

    response it received from critics before it premiered,

    ‘She put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the
    DC comics fan base.’

    They added: ‘Her team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to
    move on this from as quickly as possible.’

    ‘She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the
    first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.

    ‘She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino’s next and final
    film. Nobody knows what that is going to be, but she wants to
    audition. 

    ‘She’s going to lobby hard to get a meeting with him once a script is presented, it is
    a bucket list moment for her to be involved.’
