A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the requirements to serve the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a
seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce
are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his
various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for
special upgrades that only the CEO could
dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades
for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner
Jodie Haydon did as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate
way’.

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he
died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance, sending a
drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw
Sinwar’s 2011 release from an Israeli prison, along
with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of kidnapped soldier
Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment
of doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding
hostages that, should he be killed, they should kill their
hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza, with 60 thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families, according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there is
a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions
between Israel and Hamas.

six were ‘cruelly murdered by Hamas just a short time before we got to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24,
Carmel Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi, 26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.
Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas
terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while
taking others hostage. Gat was at her family kibbutz when she was
captured.

The ancient eruption devastated the island of Terea,
modern-day Santorini, and decimated fledgling societies across the
Mediterranean as the volcanic activity also triggered an earthquake and a tsunami in the region.
Folklore claims the eruption kickstarted a wave so big it drowned
an entire city, creating the mythical realm of Atlantis.
Researchers found an ancient olive branch buried under rocks on the island of Santorini
and used radiocarbon analysis to reveal a more accurate date for the destructive natural disaster.
It is now believed the eruption took place between 1,627 and 1,600
BCE, more than a century earlier than the 1,500 BCE date previously suggested by archaeologists.

Charred olive wood is found throughout the archaeological record and provides a consistent way to date ancient events, especially in the Mediterranean region.
The latest research took samples from an ancient piece of wood unearthed
in fragments of volcanic rock and compared it to two modern-era examples – one from a living
tree and another from a specimen that had died a few years earlier.
Dr Elizabetta Boaretto of the Weizmann Institute of Science
in Israel took 20 samples from the living tree and 11 from the dead branches, which had been cut in 2013.
These samples were used to asses how olive trees grow, and
apply the latest findings to the ancient sample unearthed
in Santorini.

Until now, it was believed the outermost ring of wood in the 3,500 year-old olive tree sample was formed just before the branch
was buried alive by the eruption.
According to the study: ‘The outermost rings of an olive branch buried during
the Santorini volcanic eruption is regarded as crucial evidence for
the date of this cataclysmic event.’
However, Dr Boaretto and her colleagues discovered that olive trees are different to most trees and do not produce visible growth rings
each year.
Using this found knowledge, scientists tested other samples from the
ancient olive tree branch to discovered parts of the branch
almost a century older than previous estimates for
the volcanic eruption on Thera.

tree was unusual and therefore may mean the original estimation of the Santorini
eruption was incorrect

Jackie O Henderson has left her father Tony red-faced after a shocking stunt in which he was tricked into reading about her threesome live on-air.
The awkward family exchange occurred on Tuesday’s Kyle and Jackie
O Show when the radio queen and co-host Kyle Sandilands were
discussing Jackie’s new memoir The Whole Truth.
Before getting her father on the line, Jackie explained to
listeners that she was about to get an unsuspecting Tony to
read an excerpt that detailed a night of passion with then boyfriend ‘Ugly’ Phil O’Neil and a 19-year-old
stripper.
‘So this is going back to my Gold Coast days when I had met Phil
who [later became] my first husband,’ the 49-year-old explained.
‘I had only just met him at this point. I think [we were] two months
into seeing each other.’
Jackie then prompted her unprepared father to read the excerpt that detailed
Phil’s living situation with the stripper and another, rather
unsavory ‘stoner’ flatmate.
‘He lived in a place in Main Beach that felt like a
motel with two weird flatmates. One was a stoner guy who
would sit there blazed out of his gourd,’ Tony read from
Jackie’s book.

Tony soldiered on with the revealing passage which revealed

Despite the raciness of the content he had
just read from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.
‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.
‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re
talking about. If it was somebody else, it would be
a different story altogether. I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put
her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked
Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs which
saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.
During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of her addiction, she took
around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

Former first lady Melania Trump said she was completely comfortable with posing nude
during her modeling days.
In her memoir Melania, which was released Tuesday, she recounts how her nude
photos were put on the cover of The New York Post during the
closing weeks of the 2016 presidential election.
The tabloid used the ‘disgusting heaadline,’ as
Melania described it, ‘Menage à Trump.’
‘My upbringing in Europe had fostered a different perspective on nudity, a more open and
accepting attitude,’ she wrote. ‘We were accustomed to beaches where
nudity was commonplace, a natural and uncontroversial aspect of life.’
She noted how ‘attitudes toward the female body in the United
States were starkly different.’

The controversial photos were from a 1996 photoshoot from a now defunct French fashion magazine called Max.
‘The photos had never been circulated in the United States,’ she
recalled. ‘The magazine that had originally published them
had ceased to exist long before these images were unearthed, and now they were being shared for the sole purpose
of damaging Donald’s campaign.’
She wrote that the photos ‘were not a source of shame for me.’
‘The female form was once revered and honored in Western culture.
Historically, artists produced magnificent paintings and sculptures that exalted the beauty of
the feminine figure. Nudity was a medium through which humanity was elevated and celebrated,’
Melania sid.
‘This sentiment resonated deeply with me when I posed for Vogue during
my pregnancy,’ she wrote.
Throughout the book she mentions her working relationship with Vogue and its longtime
top editor Anna Wintour.
These days Wintour is actively supporting former President Donald Trump’s Democratic rival,
Vice President Kamala Harris.

The former first lady said she never felt shame about posing nude but was angered
that her nude modeling photos were used to try to hurt
her husband’s first presidential campaign
‘I believed then, as I do now, that women should take
pride in their bodies, not feel shame,’ Melania
continued.
‘During my modeling days, posing nude was commonplace and hardly scandalous,
‘ she said. ‘To me, those images were artistic and tasteful, fitting for
a publication like Max, which showcased many renowned super-models.’
But there was another problem with the photographer selling the photos of Melania to the newspaper – he originally said
the photoshoot happened a year before.
‘This misinformation led to unfounded allegations that I had illegally
worked in the United States, a claim propagated by the New
York Post,’ she wrote.
‘Although the photographer later admitted the error, the damage was done –
sensationalized lies about me spread worldwide, driven by a shameful pursuit of scandal and profit,’ the former first lady added.

a lighter and more breathable option,’ the high street giant added.
‘You can achieve that elegant, barely-there look with
a little extra coverage.’
Similarly, intricate patterns, logos and glitter are
best suited for evening looks, says M&S. ‘For a daytime or office look,

There is something reassuringly robust about The
Punch Bowl Inn. Not just in the old-fashioned bar,
where the Wainwright Gold is well kept and a huge leather
sofa sits before a blazing wood burner; or in the dining room, solid
and comfortable, with its old beams, well-trodden wooden floors and tables unadorned with cloths; it’s in the menu,
too, mainly British with a Gallic burr, that makes full use of the
magnificent local Lake District larder.
Stornoway black pudding with crispy egg and bubble and squeak:
‘pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis’, is Tom’s verdict
We’re here with Peter Gott, that great Cumbrian hero,
and the man behind Sillfield Farm, who has invited me up to cook at the Westmorland County Show; also chef Phil Vickery, who certainty knows his alliums; and the force of nature
that is Lorraine Stanton, something of a legend around these parts.
But first dinner, and a sublime twice-baked Mrs Kirkham’s cheese
soufflé, the texture as light as a sigh, the flavour profoundly, lasciviously rich.
Mrs Kirkham’s, now made by her son Graham, is one of the world’s great cheeses, and this is a soufflé of
quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally splendid,
managing to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak
and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort
by way of Lewis.
There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck
à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the
sauce just the right side of bitter. It comes with a fat
potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump
of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a
tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully
sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is famed
for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time the classic version but ethereal, served
with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to pour
deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned
food, immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start. But first, another bottle of wine.
Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of
independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday
Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system
in the United States.
The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan complaining that Americans were ‘completely
trapped in the two-party system’.
‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is
the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.
‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.
‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both of the
main parties re-examine who they are and what they
stand for.
Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.
There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform
parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.
Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while another
disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four
southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.
The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy
Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent
candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.
He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet.
Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.
The former New York property developer had even considered running for
president in the 2000 election under the banner of that
movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot,
who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.
Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912
ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second
ahead of Republican William Taft.
Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away
from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition
This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now
have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.
Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first ‘teal’ independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former
prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election
Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms
but are fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.
This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal
Party on economics.
Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she
ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s
northern beaches at the 2019 election.
In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022
election.
She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally
including the four Greens, three conservative independents
and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.
Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has
recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts.
They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes
à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to
some teal candidates.
Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher
and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney

years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades
in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.
Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how
to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.
The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to
the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house
– the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.
