Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time
author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV
and radio.
And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed
attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s
Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.
Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led
to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told
Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.
Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.
The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights
by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr
Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights
Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles
and Honolulu.
But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger
and, in turn, shot himself in the foot.
He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history.
‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see
declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat
of Cook before Scott Morrison.
‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first
line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book
launch.
Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s
response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made.
‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public
figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part
in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who
is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if
the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.
‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).
‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is,
did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your
private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying
to avoid saying it.’
Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over
the flight upgrades.
Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop
mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest
blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to
resign.
Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though.
‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part
to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas.
‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both
sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.
They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.
‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about
and it never was.’
But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across
Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese.
‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the
freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time
and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen.
‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis.
‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist
almost every year for 12 years and he was the only
Prime Minister (I saw there).
‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the
International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever
seen do that.
‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s
on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example
of that.’
In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their
flight can be upgraded.
The difference with the Prime Minister is that
‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,
‘ Aston said.
‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where
it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the
flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.
‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the
ticket is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to
the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.
‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.
‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades
(for Anthony Albanese).’
Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during
his time as a travel journalist, and understands the
attraction for politicians to get up there.
‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the
plane, it’s very hard to go back.
‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got
chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs
…
‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane
on personal travel.
‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’
Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.
But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events.
Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.
‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

These are just two of the unusual sexual fantasies social
media users have confessed to trying.
A hilarious Reddit thread, named ‘what is a sexual
fantasy you do not recommend’, features the bizarre sexcapades of commenters — many of who bitterly regret their risqué acts.
The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429, who asked:
‘What is a sexual fantasy you do not recommend fulfilling?’
Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some of the
most upvoted responses, Huffpost reported.
Reddit user u/ElPresidente714 admitted to trying to have sex in the
desert at night when coming back from Vegas. But in reality, they were met
with ‘creepy crawly desert things don’t sleep at
night’.
Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered his girlfriend (including her genitals)
in chocolate syrup. But it didn’t end well — she got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast infection.
Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended badly.
User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time and if you miss it you’ll get stuck behind the gates for the
night. Then the people who live there start rustling.’
Not everyone pursues or even plans to act on their sexual
fantasies in real life. But a handful of those who have
tried to make their browser history a reality have confessed they didn’t quite
go to plan — a thread on Reddit revealed
The thread began with a question from user u/Fantastic-Ant-4429 ,

Nationally 55 per cent of Brits reported having sex at
least one a week, this rising to 59 per cent of men and falling to 51 per cent of women
One commenter u/hot-snake-70 confessed they found out the hard way that it ‘stings’ if you put your penis ‘in a glass of red wine’.
Threesomes were also suggested to be a bad idea
with user u/Touristupdatenola adding: ‘If I wanted
to disappoint two people simultaneously, I’d have dinner with both my
parents.’
Another user u/odysseus-23, warned against trying to have sex
in a library due to the likelihood of getting ‘caught on the cameras’.
And while joining the Mile High Club — engaging in sex acts while aboard an airplane — might sound exciting, some warn that it is anything but.
‘Mile high club. Trust me, these bathrooms are getting smaller and
smaller. And people notice, they always notice,’ u/bigindianenergy29 commented.
Some people came to the conclusion that the bed is the best location. u/Mundane-Garbage1003 wrote:
‘Most “having sex in an unusual place” fantasies in my experience quickly
turn into a lesson on why people usually just use the bed.’

Trump enjoys the company of plenty of friends, taking a range of advice, but he speaks of – and
to – Melania in an entirely unique way. Really, he fears
yet reveres her. He respects her independence, seeks her input, trusts her keen eye, sharp ear and sense of people.
I have witnessed their relationship up close, and it
is one fundamentally built on mutual love and respect.
Recently, as Barron was heading off for college and Melania was preparing to publish her memoir, I jokingly asked Trump how it might
feel to be the second most popular man and the second most prominent
author in the household. He chuckled and relented.
Melania Trump has plenty to say and nothing to prove. She is
not a typical political spouse rushing to the cameras on matters that are best handled privately, or loudly offering insights or slights about
her husband’s political opponents à la Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.
She is an asset, a partner, an equal who is neither trying
to control – looking at you, Jill Biden – nor controlled by
her partner. She is what many feminists insist they are: independent, a product
of her own choices, comfortable in her own skin.
She has been by Trump’s side the entire time.
Though never in his shadow. In fact, from that very first
moment they descended the golden escalator,
she’s been leading the way.

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the
opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.
The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1964 stage musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint – The Smell
Of The Crowd, is performed by Gaga for her film Joker: Folie à Deux.
To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina Riley, who also
plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the
legendary comedy.
Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture,
thanks to Gina’s rendition, the song had been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey
in 1968 and Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.
And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track –
with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of the Kath
& Kim version.
Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin, is a much more stripped back that builds
to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.
Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by the US pop star regarding the track.
‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big fan,’
Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett
in the series, said.

‘I said to Gaga, “If you want to do it, it’s up to you. I’m the fifth banana in this thing”.’

“Kim” version, is the better version.’
The Today Show posted a short clip featuring the Gaga’s version over the Kath and Kim title sequence to Instagram and viewers were quick to issue their shock at the surprising
cover version.

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded
into the public eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars wining and dining the nation’s
political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had
even started, when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline,
Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide
in the polls leading up to an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and
John Howard lose his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge then wasn’t about a prime
minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly both
members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically charged
remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would change the policies it campaigned on if it won government –
did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge membership
and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring
down the prime minister.

The existence of the lounge was so little
known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark,
Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave
actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent
flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the
Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment
reporter Richard Wilkins was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters,
actors and performers, and well-known writers and sports
people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership
of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was
a confidential conversation in a private place, but
which exposed him to criticism over his own membership
for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our
elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and
confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO
by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of
the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’
in their pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the
day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a
bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine:
‘We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership
is by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only
lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the
‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline a disproportionate level of influence
over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The
Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe
Aston, which has stirred up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93
per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to the
lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of
his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and
Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and some of their deputies are
members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime
Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries
Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include
numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts,
frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s
Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious,
with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and
a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave,
the ‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished their
membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South
Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies star turned ACT senator David Pocock,
along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against
Corruption and a director of the Centre for Public Integrity, has implored all politicians
and policymakers to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.
Why not sit with them while you’re waiting for a plane?’

May 22 (Reuters) – More than 100 public health and anti-tobacco organizations are calling on Facebook Inc,
Instagram, Twitter and Snap Inc to take “swift action” to curb advertising
of tobacco products on their platforms.
The organizations’ letter to the firms cited a recent Reuters report
website documenting how cigarette maker Philip Morris International Inc
has used young personalities on Instagram to sell
a new “heated tobacco” product called IQOS.
The groups said social media firms are not doing enough to regulate “influencers” on their platforms who are hired by companies
to promote nicotine products.
No law specifically prevents online tobacco or e-cigarette marketing,
but social media firms have policies limiting it. The health groups
said in their letter that the use of online personalities creates a “loophole” in those policies and allows “rampant marketing”
of tobacco and other nicotine products to youth.
Instagram and its parent company, Facebook, are studying the issue “to understand how we can improve,” said spokeswoman Stephanie
Otway.
The platforms currently ban brand advertising of tobacco products,
Otway said. Their policies require any sponsored “influencer”
posts that explicitly recommended buying tobacco products be restricted only to people
over 18.
But the same restriction would not apply to posts by paid influencers that depict tobacco
products favorably without explicitly saying that
people should buy them, Otway said.
In making policy for a billion users, the company has to draw lines between advertising, promotional posts and “someone having an opinion,” Otway said.
Twitter spokeswoman Elizabeth Luke said the company prohibits “the promotion of tobacco products, accessories and brands worldwide” but declined to comment on whether that includes influencers paid to feature tobacco products
on their accounts.
A Reuters review of Twitter policies shows that its tobacco promotion ban does not
include such marketing posts by individuals.
Reuters identified several Twitter posts over the last two years from influencers who posted photographs with IQOS devices or linked
back to Instagram accounts promoting the product. Twitter did not comment on the posts identified by Reuters.
Snap Inc did not respond to requests for comment.
The more than 100 organizations from 48 countries that signed the letter website which was sent to
the companies Friday and publicly released Wednesday, included the
Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the Japan Society for Tobacco Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Reuters earlier this month documented how Philip
Morris had used young social media influencers, including a 21-year-old woman in Russia, to
promote its IQOS device. The company’s internal marketing standards prohibit it from using youth-oriented celebrities or “models who are or appear to be under the age of 25.”
Philip Morris said May 10 that it launched an internal investigation and suspended all “product-related digital influencer actions globally” after Reuters sought the
company’s comment on examples of Instagram posts and
photographs depicting young, hip women advertising
IQOS.
PHILIP MORRIS SUSPENDS MARKETING, THEN DEFENDS IT
All of the posts referenced in the Reuters report remained online as of Tuesday evening.
In addition, Reuters has identified new examples of Instagram content
featuring young people with the IQOS posted in the days since Philip Morris said it had suspended its
influencer campaigns.
Several posts under the Instagram account @iqos_egypt over the past week have featured young men and women website
using the device at bars or cocktail events website Other posts
from accounts using the IQOS name in Poland, Armenia, Italy and Iran over the last week also showed young website trendy website men website and women website using the devices.
Other posts emerged over the last week from a photographer
who documented an IQOS-sponsored VIP lounge at an April music festival in Colombia.
A representative for an IQOS store in Sarno, Italy, said employees found
the recent photos of women using IQOS elsewhere online and reposted
them on the store’s Instagram account. A representative of an IQOS-branded Instagram account in Armenia denied being paid by Philip Morris to promote
the product.
Other Instagram account owners promoting IQOS did not respond to requests for comment.
None of the influencers mentioned in the May 10 Reuters report responded to
requests for comment on whether they had been asked
to stop posting or remove posts marketing Philip Morris products.
Philip Morris spokesman Ryan Sparrow said the firm
had “directed that there should be no new posts” by influencers.
Sparrow did not respond to questions about whether the company had
stopped paying influencers or attempted to remove existing
posts.
Sparrow said some of the new posts “seem to originate from third parties, not PMI, and in countries where we do not sell IQOS,” noting Eqypt and Iran.
Sparrow defended the suspended marketing campaign as a vital way to
inform adult cigarette smokers about safer options.
He blasted the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids for
“trying to pressure us … to effectively block these channels” and “in effect perpetuating the consumption of tobacco in its most harmful form: combustible cigarettes.”
Caroline Renzulli, a spokeswoman for the anti-tobacco campaign, called it “laughable” that Philip Morris used social media to market to adults.
Philip Morris International has licensed Altria Group Inc to market the IQOS device in the United States beginning this summer.
Altria, which sells Marlboro cigarettes in the United States, has previously said it has a policy of not advertising on social media.
However, an online job posting from the company in March seeks a “digital marketing specialist” for the “IQOS brand team.” The ideal
candidate will develop marketing strategy for “e-commerce, owned websites, social media and influencers.”
Altria spokesman David Sutton said the company has no plans
to use social media influencers to market IQOS but did not respond to questions about the job posting mentioning an influencer strategy.
REGULATORY GRAY AREA
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month decided
to allow U.S. sales of the IQOS device after a two-year review
process in which Philip Morris repeatedly assured
the regulator that it would warn young people away from the product.
Digital advertising of tobacco products remains a gray area for regulators globally.
Tobacco advertising regulations in the United States and elsewhere were written before the rise of
social media marketing.
The FDA, however, can exert authority over
the digital marketing of new devices it clears
for sale. As a condition of allowing Philip Morris to sell the IQOS
device, the agency requires the company to provide detailed analyses of the age
ranges of consumers it reaches with online marketing.
Philip Morris, through Altria, is also required to submit information on any new U.S.
advertising campaigns to the FDA at least 30 days before it plans to launch them.
A global treaty governing tobacco regulations, under the
umbrella of the World Health Organization, urges countries worldwide to entirely ban tobacco advertising.
A 2018 WHO report about tobacco promotion in entertainment and social media channels
acknowledged the challenges of regulating it.

review for Variety, writing that the ‘cracked jukebox musical’ had an audacious concept,
‘but in a basic way it’s an overly cautious sequel.’
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich took a bit of a harsher
tone, saying the 138-minute flick is ‘boring, flat, and a criminal waste of Lady Gaga,’ adding it feels ‘bad on purpose.’
He added: ‘Phillips has created a corporate pop spectacle that all but demands to be seen as something
else.
‘Here is a movie that perversely denies audiences everything they’ve been conditioned to want from it;
gently at first, and then later with the unmistakable hostility of a knife to the gut.
‘And that, more than anything else, is why Folie à
Deux adopts the form of a classic musical: Because no
other genre makes it so easy to appreciate all the
fun you’re not having.’
In contrast, Alex Harrison of ScreenRant describes Joker:

‘Phoenix knows this character inside and out, and in what
others might say is a risky proposition, he tap dances, sings and sells

way to take him in different, wholly surprising direction.
‘Gaga is smartly low-key, not the Harley Quinn we associate with

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and
reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to
the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights
for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot
peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely
debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire
Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,
500 votes — every ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts
were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at it, to vote for Vice President
Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional
protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse,
has worked in several states where abortion is banned
or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat
them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.

As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less
likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices
who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez,
a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that
have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris
administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest
and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally —
powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.

The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions
at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the
race for the White House that activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and
both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring
Trump back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,”
an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,”
she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not
just among Trump Republicans but also “moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her
promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”
