    Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his
    ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

    However that characterization of the relationship
    was at odds with that made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr
    Albanese and had been ‘for years’.

    In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister
    had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

    When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr
    Albanese implied it was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister. 

    ‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline … I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese
    said.

    That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

    Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last
    year.

    In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and
    the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.

    Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′
    emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

    Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet with one arm around the prime minister and the
    other around his partner, Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary event
    last year

    Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the
    PM bursting into laughter.

    Even when Scott Morrison was PM,  Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship with Mr Albanese as the pair stood close together at the
    launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018. 

    During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr
    Albanese.

    Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious
    and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

    ‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce said. 

    However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he
    lobbied the Prime Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor
    Qatar Airways out of domestic routes.

    It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms
    Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

    Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from
    economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

    Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself
    or his family.

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas
    trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being
    for holidays.

    Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and
    all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of
    Mr Joyce. 

    Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted
    Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.

    ‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one
    of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else because I’m not
    aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

    It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the
    Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

    The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce
    for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference in the NSW
    city of Newcastle.

    ‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed through calls – we discussed
    the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

    ‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’

    Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about
    how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

    ‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

    Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to
    block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.

    Mr Albanese’s son Nathan, 24, has reportedly also been granted access to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

    ‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity
    in the Albanese government that would not go through the Prime Minister’s office,’ Aston replied.

    He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks. 

     Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

    Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed
    to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled
    together.

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has  questioned the alleged personal requests Mr Albanese made to Mr Joyce  while in his
    various parliamentary jobs

    Even when Scott Morrison was prime minister, Mr Joyce appeared to have
    a close relationship with Mr Albanese (the pair are pictured at an event in 2019)

    Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr
    Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s personal travel agent.’

    ‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.
    They’d never be able to afford the luxury
    of business class. It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

    ‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of free upgrades
    to business class? The revelations puts the decision he made as
    transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

    ‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also politically lethal.
    Albanese took care to curate a self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
    But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie
    enjoying the perks of public office.’

    Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with
    Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport Workers
    Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid. 

    The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal
    Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible
    hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts. 

    The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil
    Mitchell. 

    ‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

    ‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised
    by having Alan Joyce as a bestie? Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

    Nov 27 – European leaders´ proposals to curb migration may appeal to a large swathe of voters, but they won´t please most economists.
    Many EU leaders are ramping up efforts to curb migration, in particular
    the entrance of refugees and asylum seekers. While several plans have been scuppered by court rulings, like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia
    Meloni´s recent proposal to process asylum seekers in Albania, the
    opposition to immigration across the bloc shows little sign of abating.

    And even though curtailing illegal immigration is important for Europe, a wider
    pushback could prove counterproductive from an economic standpoint because immigrants, on average, make a positive contribution to
    EU government finances and economic activity.

    Attempting to restrict immigration broadly could therefore weigh on the already-low growth rates
    in many European economies and potentially increase
    inflation in the region over the long run – making EU policymakers´ jobs even harder.

    RETURN ON INVESTMENT In its 2021 Migration Outlook, the OECD calculated
    the direct contribution of immigrants and natives to government finances in a range of countries.

    This direct contribution is calculated as taxes paid minus
    individual government aid received, such
    as government benefits, pensions, education and healthcare.

    At first glance, the benefit of immigration appears modest.
    Across OECD countries, immigrants made a net contribution of
    1.6% of GDP to government finances, compared to 7.9% for the native population.

    But immigrants make up only 10-20% of the total population. After adjusting for that, it quickly becomes clear that
    immigration is a boon for government finances. For the developed countries in the OECD, governments
    receive about 53% more in revenue from immigrants than they spend
    on them. For countries like Italy and Spain, this
    return on investment approaches or even surpasses 100%.
    Compare this to the return on investment for the native-born, which is typically between 30% and
    40% and averages 35% in the OECD.

    Critics may argue that these calculations ignore other
    costs of immigration such as border control and policing.

    If these government expenses are added back, the
    so-called `fiscal return´ on immigration does become negative, but so does the return on the native population. Like-for-like, immigrants are still less
    costly to the government than native-born citizens.
    Of course, not all immigrants contribute equally to government finances, and highly skilled immigrants obviously contribute more,
    on average, than low-skilled ones.

    But one should not underestimate the contribution low-skilled immigrants make and
    the potential costs to an economy if they are removed from
    the workforce. For instance, the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) has simulated the impact on the U.S.
    economy of president-elect Donald Trump´s mass deportation plans.

    PIIE estimates that the deportation of 1.3 million undocumented immigrants would reduce the country´s GDP by 0.3% per year
    and increase inflation by 0.3% per year in the first three years.

    Turning back to Europe, my own model projects that euro zone inflation would rise by roughly 0.3%
    per year if immigration levels to the region were halved.

    Businesses facing a smaller labour supply would either have to produce fewer goods and services, creating shortages that could push up
    prices, or invest in automation, a cost that would likely
    be recovered via higher prices.

    VICIOUS CYCLE

    Reducing immigration could prove especially costly for the euro zone,
    given that it´s facing an aging population, low birth rates and stagnation in its largest
    economy, Germany.

    A significant reduction in immigration could increase government deficits, while the reduced supply of labour would likely curtail GDP growth.
    This, in turn, could create a negative feedback loop, with weaker
    GDP growth shrinking the government´s tax intake and further expanding
    deficits.

    Plus, if labour supply is lower, whether it´s skilled or unskilled
    labour, wage inflation is apt to speed up,
    which could generate higher inflation overall
    – and higher interest rates – for everyone.

    The EU already faces an unnerving economic outlook.
    In September, former president of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi said that the bloc must invest heavily or face the slow agony of low growth
    and economic decline.

    If immigration is reduced in the EU, the negative
    trends Draghi is warning about will almost certainly get worse, meaning even more investment –
    and borrowing – will be needed to boost economic activity.

    European leaders would therefore be wise to heed economists´ advice and not create additional hurdles
    for themselves as they seek to get growth back on track.

    DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
    Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to
    his huge past successes.

    It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two
    months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

    Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for
    the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told
    a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
    movie.’

    Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with
    Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to
    filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’

    The studio wanted to film in London which would
    have cost around 20 per cent less.

    A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The
    one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips

    However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

    A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported

    Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days after a chaotic election,
    set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.

    Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where
    Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a “sham” by the opposition.

    Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls,
    billed as the toughest yet for the South West
    Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence
    from South africa.

    Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems,
    including issues with tablets used to register voters
    and shortages of ballot papers.

    In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and
    mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues,
    it said.

    Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral
    commission extended the vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday
    evening to vote.

    In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen,
    about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:
    30 am.

    The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:
    00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

    But because Namibians can vote at any given polling

    Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement, according to
    Christine Aochamus who represents the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.

    Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a
    generation born after independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.

    Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the first woman to lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the
    mineral rich country.

    “To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund, who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite
    trying four different polling stations.

    “Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked

    Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by Jeffries
    and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.

    An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared
    to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to

    U.S. to the fourth quarter on Tuesday and lowered its

    Philip Morris has invested billions to promote and expand

    The launch of its flagship heated tobacco device in the United States is also facing resistance
    from health campaigners, who have written to regulators in the country accusing the company of
    misrepresenting past regulatory decisions, Reuters reported last

    Food and Drug Administration for its IQOS ILUMA device,
    which it expects by the second half of 2025.

    A ban on flavored heated tobacco in the European Union has already hit shipments this year, with Philip Morris saying the impact from the ban was
    “slightly greater” than previously assumed.

    This led the company to temper its expectations for volume growth in the heated tobacco category to around 13% for the full year,
    down from between 14% and 16% expected earlier.

    ‘Tis the season for decadence and a touch of sparkle – and what better way
    to bring festive cheer than a fridge full of fizz for parties and
    impromptu gatherings?

    Champagne is admittedly my bubbly of choice – I love both poised, elegant styles with
    brisk acidity and the richer, pastry-like, gastronomic pours.

    But with Christmas all about sharing, toasting, and big get-togethers,
    stocking up is essential.

    Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne the best Christmas fizz,
    outclassing Moët & Chandon’s Brut Impérial. The supermarket fizz costs just £25 a bottle, but many popular Champagnes are priced over £40.

    With that in mind, I’m sharing my secrets for sparkling swaps that keep both the palate and the wallet
    happy.

    Bollinger Champagne, £58

    Swap for? Langlois Crémant Brut Réserve NV, £15.95

    Saving: £42.05 a bottle 

    For Bolly bling without the sting, head to the Loire Valley,
    where the Bollinger family crafts this Crémant using the same traditional method as their Champagnes.

    Made primarily from Chenin Blanc, which thrives in the Loire, it undergoes
    24 months of aging, delivering a Crémant with depth that offers a charming twist on Bollinger’s rich Champagne style – with change to spare.

    Louis Roederer Cristal Champagne, £280

    Swap for? Roederer Estate Quartet NV, £32

    Saving: £248 a bottle 

    Renowned producer Louis Roederer is the name behind the iconic
    Cristal Champagne – a prized choice among celebrities,
    especially when served in a flashy jeroboam, complete with sparklers in the ‘VIP section’ of nightclubs.
    But if the £270 price tag brings tears to your eyes, try Cristal’s Californian cousin, Quartet.
    Crafted in the cool Anderson Valley, it offers a taste of luxury for almost a tenth of the cost.

    Laurent Perrier Rosé Champagne, £80

    Swap for? Morrisons The Best Crémant De Limoux Rosé
    NV, £12.50

    Saving: £67.50 a bottle 

    If you’re after something pink, grab this super chic Crémant
    de Limoux from Morrisons – delivering luxe for less.
    With a delicate effervescence and notes of strawberries and cream, it hints at
    pink Champagne at five times the price. And here’s a little-known fact:
    legend has it that the art of fizz was first
    discovered in Limoux, in the South of France – though our friends in Champagne may disagree.

    Ace of Spades Champagne, £315

    Swap for? Segura Viudas Brut Vintage Premium Cava, £12

    Saving:  £303 a bottle

    For showstopping-style on a shoestring, skip Harrods,
    forget Jay-Z’s red-carpet-ready ‘Ace of Spades’ and head to Sainsbury’s for Segura Viudas premium cava, complete with a shield
    that’s delightfully close to a spade. For the price of one
    bottle of that Champagne, you could bag 26 bottles of this classy cava
    – and, honestly, after a few glasses, who’s noticing the difference?

    Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Champagne, £89

    Swap for? Fortnum’s Franca Contea Franciacorta Brut NV, £26.50

    Saving: £62.50 a bottle

    ‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for
    bubbles made solely from white grapes – typically Chardonnay in Champagne, delivering elegance and finesse, à la Ruinart.
    Prices have crept up as Blanc de Blancs become all the rage,
    but hop over the border to the hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy, northern Italy, and you’ll find complex, vinous sips with plenty of flair, like
    this Fortnum’s pick.

    Pol Roger Champagne, £55

    Swap for? Graham Beck Selection Sparkling Wine, £13.50

    Saving:  £41.50 a bottle

    I served these delicious South African bubbles at my wedding – quaffed in record time,
    with nobody realising it wasn’t Champagne. As well as my own big day, Graham Beck has made an appearance at
    state events for Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama, earning
    it the title of ‘presidential pick’ for sparkling wine.

    And you’ll save a few quid compared to other politician favourites, like Pol Roger.

    Mumm Champagne, £39

    Swap for? Mumm Marlborough Brut Prestige, £25

    Saving:  £14 a bottle

    From Marlborough, New Zealand’s premier region and home
    of top Brit sip, Sauvignon Blanc, comes a fresh take
    on fizz. Blessed with sunshine and a cool climate,
    Marlborough produces wines that are vibrant and crisp.

    Here, a blend of traditional Champagne varieties –
    Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier –
    offers an easy-drinking, bright character, and a great value sub for Mumm’s beloved bubbles.

    Veuve Clicquot Champagne, £48

    Swap for? Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut NV, £14.99

    Saving:  £33.01 a bottle

    First launched over a decade ago at £12.99, Aldi has
    miraculously kept their best-selling Veuve Monsigny Champagne under £15.

    For a sprightly, quaffable style, it’s unbeatable at that price –
    perfect for Buck’s Fizz at Christmas Day brunch, canapés, and a refreshing post-turkey sip.
    It’s worth mentioning that the Premier Cru label at £21.99 is a real step
    up and fantastic value too.

    Moët & Chandon Champagne, £44

    Swap for? Chandon Brut Argentina, £23

    Saving: £21 a bottle 

    From Champagne giant Moët & Chandon, Chandon Brut is a Champagne-style bubbly from Mendoza, Argentina.
    If you’re thinking Mendoza is known for its hot climate
    and big, bold Malbec reds, think again – Chandon’s
    vineyards are situated in the foothills of the Andes at over 1,000
    metres, where cooling influences help retain that desirable freshness in the grapes.
