    An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
    Providing, of course, that the bill was
    on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
    There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them
    much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there
    are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is
    ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to
    be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand,
    went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another
    Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great
    unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome
    – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish,
    under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular
    gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright,
    while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
    The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
    They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
    Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
    Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily,
    glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that
    had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
    Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are
    a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
    Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
    But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
    But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
    One taste is never enough.

    Forget tiny chihuahuas peeping out of handbags à la Paris Hilton, or Taylor
    Swift with her adorably grumpy looking Scottish Fold cats who have
    become celebrities in their own right. 

    When it comes to capturing my heart with a cuddly creature, it’s the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, 75, who’s reinvented himself as the internet’s favourite granddad with his wholesome life with
    a menagerie of animals, who has won me over.

    The jewel in the crown of his ever-growing brood of beasts is Schnelly the pig,
    who joined the family in April last year, making the star the latest
    in a long list of celebrities to realise the joys of a porky pal – along with Ariana Grande,
    Miley Cyrus and the Beckhams. 

    I’m completely smitten with the cuteness of pet pigs. I lose hours scrolling through Instagram, looking
    at pictures of furry little piglets with pretty pink snouts.

    There are 255,000 Insta posts with the hashtag #petpig and I’ve probably looked at all of them.
    Then there’s the 286,000 posts hashtagged #micropig and I’d
    hazard a guess that I’ve seen all of those too.

    So I’m rather excited to discover that there’s a pig farm less than an hour from central London, where
    I can find out what it’s really like to have a porcine pet.

    While celebrities might get away with turning up to photoshoots,
    TV appearances and fancy restaurants with all manner of furry
    creatures, will I get the same reception if I
    take a pig for a stroll down the high street?

    The pair stopped off at The Griffin, a private members
    club, bistro and bakery, for some refreshments after a
    trot down the high street 

    Samantha Rea spent time at the Kew Little Pig Farm in Amersham,
    Buckinghamshire to learn how to muck out and care for pigs 

    Learning how to feed hay to the pigs did make Samantha question whether it’s easier to stick with a dog or cat
    as a pet 

    I’m hoping the Kew Little Pigs Farm will help me find out.
    It specialises in miniature pigs, which pig lovers can buy or ‘adopt’ to visit
    on the farm.

    Then there are the day trips. The Piggy Pet & Play package lets
    visitors ‘pet, brush, groom, watch and play with the pigs.’ The Pig
    Enthusiast package can include putting sun cream on the pigs, and the Comprehensive Guide to Pig Keeping teaches you everything you need to know before buying your own micro
    pig.

    Clearly I must go there!

    And so I head to Amersham, in Buckinghamshire, where Kew Little Pigs Farm is based.

    When I arrive, owner Olivia Mikhail looks slightly concerned at
    the sight of my Converse trainers and cropped jeans, a combination that will surely result in splattered shins.

    However, Olivia has no idea just how prepared I actually am, because I have packed
    not only knee high wellies for my time on the farm, but also my designer heels, for my glimpse into what life’s like as a pig-owning
    celebrity.

    George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus, Jonathan Ross, Charlotte Church and even the Beckhams have all kept pigs as pets over the past decade or so, while more
    recently Ariane Grande and Pete Davidson adopted Piggy Smallz during their short-lived romance. 

    Comedian John Bishop gave rescue pig Milo a home
    for more than a decade and was devastated when the pet passed away,
    saying he was the ‘heartbeat’ of the family.

    They’re as much a celeb accessory as oversized sunglasses – which
    is why I’ve brought those with me too.

    But first things first. Before I spend an afternoon taking a
    petite pig for a stroll, I sit down with Olivia in the Kew Little
    Pigs cafe, to complete the theory side of the Comprehensive Guide to Pig
    Keeping.

    It turns out there is quite a lot of admin involved in owning a pig,
    alongside a rule book thicker than Harry Potter. 

    Who knew that you needed a license to walk a pig?

    Who would imagine that you can’t feed pigs your kitchen leftovers?
    It used to be common practice, but has been banned because
    of the risk of diseases such as African swine flu and foot and mouth disease that
    can be spread by consuming contaminated pork products. 

    Who can fathom having to fill out a form to drive your
    pig from one place to another – again for disease control reasons? 

    After all the admin and mucking out, Samantha was delighted to move
    on to the fun part – cuddles with Astrid 

    Samantha found that mucking out the pig pen was actually a lot more civilised than picking up poo on a dog walk 

    Samantha came armed with wellies for her day at the farm, but made sure to keep
    it glamorous 

    After swapping her flimsy trainers for wellies, Samantha felt equipped to tackle her day on the farm 

    And who would guess that pigs have to have their own house?
    I mean, it’s only got to be about the size of shed, but it’s actually a
    law to uphold welfare standards.

    I suppose none of this is an issue for celebrities who have people to do paperwork for them – not to
    mention acres of space – but to me it seems insurmountable.

    Olivia senses that my dreams are crushed and attempts to reassure me:
    ‘It’s really not that much paperwork. Look,
    filling in this form would take two minutes.’ 

    Moving on from the theory, we head outside
    for the practical part of the course. Here, in large pens, are lots of little pigs
    which are super cute, so this makes me happy.

    I am given a rake to claw the pig poo into a dustpan. Both
    the rake and the dustpan have long handles and I like
    the distance this creates. It is certainly more civilised than picking up poo in a flimsy plastic bag on a dog walk. 

    Clearing away pig excrement with proper equipment which allows you to maintain a civilised, and sanitary, distance makes me wonder if – despite the paperwork
    – pigs might just trump dogs.

    Samantha treated herself to a hot chocolate while Astrid enjoyed
    some pig treats 

    Samantha swapped her wellington boots for high heels to glam up to take her pet pig down to the
    town centre for lunch

    Taking a pig out for a walk is trickier than it looks, and a lot of
    treats are required to keep things on track 

    Next, Olivia asks if I would like to feed the pigs.
    Yes of course! She hands me some hay that’s stuffed inside what’s basically a large fishnet stocking, the size of Santa’s sack.
    The hay sticks out of all the holes, and it’s my job to hang up the sack in the pig pen, so the pigs can eat from it.

    This sounds easy. Only it’s not. ‘NOT THERE! NO!

    IT’S GOT TO BE HIGHER! TIE IT ROUND THE POST! NO! NOT LIKE THAT!
    NO!’

    I feel like a failing contestant on The Crystal Maze, only this is worse because I’m now surrounded by hungry pigs and I cannot see a panic button.

    I swear there was something on Netflix where murdered
    bodies were dumped in a pig pen, to be eaten by the pigs.

    Or maybe the bodies were eaten alive. This definitely happens
    all the time, according to TV, and now I don’t even know which
    is worse, the prospect of being felled by pigs eating through my ankles, or the pressure to hang the hay correctly.

    It is like my challenge on The Crystal Maze has been especially devised to
    amuse the inhabitants of hell.

    I find myself grateful to make it out of the pig pen alive.
    Surely I get to do celebrity stuff now?

    Celebrities’ pigs are as stylish as their
    owners, so I’ve sourced designer outfits for my trottered
    chums. I’d initially looked at diamond chokers by Dior, because what pig wouldn’t want a
    diamond collar? But apparently pigs are happier in harnesses,
    which fit around the body, not just the neck.

    I hunt for a harness that an A-lister might pick for their pig, and I am delighted to discover a
    pink leopard print harness with a matching lead. 

    It is by Urban Pup, a pet fashion brand whose website I’ve now spent more time on than all the other websites in my search history.

    There’s the zebra print, the cheetah print, the
    pink argyle; the florals, the tartans, and the hearts.
    There’s the range inspired by Legally Blonde and the pet
    carrier that resembles a pink Chanel handbag.

    Then there are the socks…

    I turn up at the farm with more outfits for the pigs than I have for
    myself. I guess this is what it’s like being a pig parent: #SELFLESS

    I am introduced to Astrid, a 16 month old micro piglet who’ll fulfill
    my dreams of walking a pig. I show Olivia all the outfits I’ve
    brought from Urban Pup and she picks out a pink tartan harness
    with a matching lead.

    I want to dress up all the pigs but Olivia says no.
    That’s OK. There is probably some law about
    only one pig at a time looking this stunning.

    When Astrid and I are dressed, we head into Old Amersham.
    It’s a pretty market town in the Chilterns with cobbled streets and quaint white buildings with beams.

    So how will locals feel about a pig on a lead?

    I imagine I may be sternly spoken to by a member of the Women’s Institute.
    However, it turns out that Old Amersham is perfectly au fait with
    celebrity antics, given that Poirot, Midsomer Murders and Four Weddings and a Funeral have all been filmed there.

    On my pig keeping course I have learnt that pigs never poo where they
    eat, sleep or socialise, because they’re very clean, so from day one, without any training, a pig will go outside to
    poo.

    I am surprised then, as I arrive in Old Amersham, to find that Astrid has done her business in her carry box.
    I try not to think about this, as I hold her lead.

    Our first stop is the Amersham Museum. I’m not a massive fan of walking around
    looking at things, but I hear the museum homes a Tudor dining table that visitors are welcome to sit at.
    It is about lunchtime, so I’m hopeful I’ll be served a Tudor banquet.
    I quite fancy a tankard of wine and a bit of wild boar.

    Unfortunately, Astrid does not, and so, despite being welcomed by museum
    director Briony, we leave pretty much as soon as we arrive.

    We go for a stroll instead, but I have to scatter pig food pellets to coax
    Astrid along the pavement. I guess celebrities get
    their assistants to walk ahead, trailing treats to entice the pet pigs in the right direction.

    However, doing it without an assistant, I find myself thinking that it’s
    definitely easier to walk a dog.

    Celebrity life is about lounging in luxurious surroundings,
    so Astrid and I head to The Griffin, a private members club, bistro and bakery, that’s pretty much
    the Soho House of Amersham.

    In the beamed building that dates back to the 17th century,
    there are gorgeous leather sofas and cosy cushions. However, I have learnt
    on my pig keeping course that pigs are happiest
    alfresco, so Astrid and I take a seat on the
    astro-turf terrace, beneath a pretty parasol that wouldn’t be
    out of place in a Cotswolds shoot for Tatler.

    It is here, as we relax like A-listers, that Astrid and I are at our happiest.
    As I sip a coffee and eye-up a chocolate brownie (I’m being a celebrity, remember, I don’t actually
    eat these things), Astrid puts her trotters up on the seat beside me and enjoys a few pig
    food pellets.

    Clearly this is our natural environment, so it’s probably just a matter of time before Astrid is
    snapped up by a celebrity to live life first class. 

    But for now, Astrid must mooch back to the mud, and I must
    head home to wash pig poo off my wellies.

    I am chuffed to bits to have spent an afternoon with Astrid, but as I think it all over, on the train back to Marylebone,
    I know that I’ll never keep a pig as a pet. 

    Aside from all the legal red tape, my lack of space in London, and the trickiness of trying to take a pig for
    a walk, there’s always the fear that the micro pig might turn out to be not so tiny after all. 

    I’ve seen headlines about 4 ounce “teacup” pigs growing
    bigger than a bear, and frankly I find it terrifying. So I’ll leave the pet pigs to the celebrities.

    Residents of a tiny town are in uproar over plans to replace
    a street housing disabled people with those with mental
    health and drug problems.

    The remote neighborhood of 20 homes on Turkey Hill in Belleville, Illinois, was for 40 years
    used for adults with developmental disabilities.

    St Clair Associated Vocational Enterprises gave them a community,
    often with their families, and provided them with jobs at its nearby facilities.

    But the program was shut down last year after state policy changed to
    favor integrating disabled people into the community rather than segregating them.

    SAVE lost its Illinois Department of Human Services
    funding as a result and discontinued the program, though it maintained its vocational day programs.

    The remote neighborhood of 20 homes on Turkey Hill in Belleville, Illinois ,
    was for 40 years used for adults with developmental disabilities

    With the homes sitting empty, SAVE made a deal with Comprehensive Behavioral
    Health Center to house its clients in 15 of the 17 remaining buildings.

    CBHC has a $537,000 federal Department of Housing and Urban Development grant
    to provide low-income housing to people with behavioral disabilities.

    The people who would move in include those with mental illness, substance abuse
    problems, homelessness, or struggling with other crises.

    ‘Our mission is to provide quality individualized essential services for people in need of emotional, rehabilitative and social support, on a twenty-four (24)
    hour basis, in the least restrictive environment,’
    its website reads.

    However, rumors ran like wildfire through nearby neighborhoods who originally thoughts the homes would house
    migrants from Chicago.

    When they discovered who would actually be moving in, they
    instead feared an influx of violence into their community.

    St Clair Associated Vocational Enterprises gave them a
    community, often with their families, and provided them with jobs at
    its nearby facilities

    Residents erect a structure as part of their vocational training

    ‘I worry about more than anything are drive-by shootings or people getting into fights, and then you
    have gunfire going off,’ Ginger Miller, who lives nearby, told the
    Belleville News-Democrat.

    ‘I know the Freeburg police don’t have the manpower to patrol it
    regularly, and our county police are already stretched
    thin.’

    Frank Heiligenstein, who lives in nearby Freeburg, runs
    the Citizens Federation of St. Clair County and put the issue on the agenda for its meeting on Wednesday.

    He originally titled it ‘the relocation of migrants from
    Chicago to the Turkey Hill SAVE site’ until he learned
    the truth.

    ‘We might have been better off with migrants coming in because
    they aspire to go to work someplace,’ he said. 

    ‘We have several facilities out here… that use migrants,
    legally and illegally. Some of them have to use them to
    sustain their operations.’

    SAVE executive director Paul Wibbenmeyer said leasing the homes to CBHC would give the organization some income and still help people.

    ‘The homes will be put to a use that isn’t very different from what
    we’ve done in the past. We served a population that had challenges,’ he told the newspaper.

    ‘The people that the HUD grant is designed to assist have challenges of their own.’

    CBHC executive director Joe Harper said the people who would move in were already in the community and needed
    its help.

    ‘We’re attempting to help them by giving them a stable place to live
    so they can become contributing members of the community,’ he
    said.

    Wibbenmeyer said CBHC would have an employee on sight at all
    times, and more than one much of the time.

    The group was looking into providing a shuttle bus to move residents in an out of the isolated neighborhood, and some may have their own cars.

    The neighborhood is remote, with SAVE’s facilities (top
    right) including warehouses and assembly and packaging
    plants nearby where disabled clients, both residents and those who just come
    for the day, lean vocational skills and work for pay

    CBHC provides therapeutic counseling, psycho-social testing, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, consultation, community intervention, psychiatric
    evaluation, case management services, referrals,
    and outreach services.

    Other services include drug treatment, teen-parenting classes, and transition from homelessness.

    The small, basic-build frame houses were built to house personnel

    The government let SAVE use it in 1975 and later gifted it the land and buildings.

    Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two
    days after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s
    34-year grip on power, was marred by technical problems.

    Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a “sham” by the opposition.

    Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls,
    billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South
    africa.

    Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages
    of ballot papers.

    In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and mobile voting teams had left areas with
    voters still in the queues, it said.

    Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the
    vote for a second time, giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

    In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen,
    about 60 people showed up on Friday, including
    Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.

    The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until
    11:00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as
    he had exams the next day.

    “Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said. But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was
    worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”

    The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties
    with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.

    Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement, according
    to Christine Aochamus who represents the Independent
    Patriots for Change (IPC) party.

    Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a
    generation born after independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which
    has ruled since 1990.

    Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah,
    who could become the first woman to lead the country if elected,
    could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.

    “To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund, who
    also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of
    long queues despite trying four different polling stations.

    “Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old

    Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister and a corporate titan, as he battles claims the Qantas boss was
    his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.

    However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that
    made by Mr Joyce, who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and
    had been ‘for years’.

    In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and
    upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas chief.

    When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it was purely in a professional
    capacity, having been Transport Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister. 

    ‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
    I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese
    said.

    That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company. 

    Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high
    spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th
    Gala Dinner in March last year.

    In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with
    one arm around the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.

    Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese
    attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′ emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.

    Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm,

    stood close together at the launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight in March, 2018. 

    During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.

    Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a
    membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused
    to confirm or deny but talked up his relationship with the Prime Minister.

    ‘I’ve been good mates with Albo for some time,’ Mr Joyce
    said. 

    However, the then Qantas CEO refused to say whether he lobbied the Prime
    Minister on the controversial decision to lock competitor Qatar Airways out of domestic
    routes.

    It has since emerged in a new book about Qantas, The Chairman’s Lounge, by former
    Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston that Ms
    Haydon is also a Chairman’s Lounge member.

    Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades from
    economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them. 

    Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while
    in his various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself
    or his family.

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received
    upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London,
    Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for
    holidays.

    Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.    

    Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing Mr Albanese as being the
    ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce. 

    Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted Mr Joyce to
    request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.

    ‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking for a free upgrade,
    then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more
    effectively than anyone else because I’m not aware of anyone
    else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

    It has since emerged that Ms Haydon also has membership of the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge

    The Prime Minister denied frequently asking Mr Joyce for upgrades on Tuesday at press conference
    in the NSW city of Newcastle.

    ‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly
    were not discussed through calls – we discussed the first flight from Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.

    ‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’

    Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for upgrades.

    ‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.

    Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said it was ‘implausible’ to think that
    the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.

    ‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not

    He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with Transport Minister Catherine
    King speaking warmly about the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks. 

     Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due
    to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.

    Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that he failed to do for
    his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

    Sky New host Sharri Markson on Monday night labeled Mr Joyce as ‘basically Albanese’s personal travel agent.’

    ‘This is all a question of integrity. Most Australians struggle to afford even an economy airfare.

    They’d never be able to afford the luxury of business class.

    It’s out of our reach,’ she said.

    ‘Can Albanese truly be impartial when it comes to
    making decisions about Qantas when he’s been getting tens of thousands of dollars worth
    of free upgrades to business class? The revelations puts the decision he made as transport minister and prime minister under a cloud.

    ‘Aside from the integrity issues, this revelation is also
    politically lethal. Albanese took care to curate a
    self-image of a housing commission boy who made it.
    But now the perception is cementing of a long-term pollie enjoying the
    perks of public office.’

    Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s  apparent close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor
    leader in a trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted
    to break the power of the Transport Workers Union by sacking 1700
    staff during Covid. 

    The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the
    union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts. 

    The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil Mitchell. 

    ‘Quick test: upgrade Albo is a bad look,’ Mitchell wrote on X.

    ‘But does anybody believe he was seriously compromised by having Alan Joyce as a bestie?
    Time to rewrite rules governing politicians.’

    Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians,
    unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

    The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan 
    complaining that Americans were ‘completely
    trapped in the two-party system’.

    ‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing
    that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise
    of independents,’ Crowe countered.

    ‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those
    independents have to bring a non-party-line series
    of points to the argument.

    ‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s
    making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

    Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’,
    highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the
    Democrat and Republican parties.

    There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these
    receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

    Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

    Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media figures in the world 

    Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five
    southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist
    platform but with only a million votes.

    The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get
    on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

    He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

    Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

    The former New York property developer had even considered
    running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed
    by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.

    Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate – carrying
    six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.

    Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

    This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

    Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success
    when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s
    northern beaches at the 2019 election.

    In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally
    Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg
    at the 2022 election. 

    She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with
    this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

    Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal
    social media adverts.

    They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court,
    who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates.

    Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.

    Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school
    kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

    The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the
    Indigenous Voice to Parliament. 

    The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the
    highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

    Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author
    dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

    And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over
    what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

    Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which
    has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is
    ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

    Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

    The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally
    requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

    According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22
    flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips
    to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

    But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn,
    shot himself in the foot. 

    He said Aston was using the accusations
    to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

    ‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s
    a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

    But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as
    the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

    And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for
    then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

    ‘My professional history is not a secret or not
    disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first
    page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before
    his book launch. 

    Though he was grateful for the free publicity
    Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made. 

    ‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public
    figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

    Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack,
    Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist,
    wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at
    this point’.

    ‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and
    he’s blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking
    upgrades (on Qantas flights).

    ‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is,
    did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
    The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to
    avoid saying it.’

    Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to
    the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

    Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to
    pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow
    to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

    Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

    ‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part
    to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

    ‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
    anyone who reads the book will learn that
    this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

    ‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it.

    They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

    ‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
    I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

    But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being
    had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

    ‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’
    he said.

    ‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour
    is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

    ‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

    ‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every
    year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

    ‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International
    Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever
    seen do that.

    ‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s
    on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

    In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office
    phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

    The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

    ‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

    ‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the
    ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
    You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers
    going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

    ‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting
    a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the
    CEO. No other executive can do that.

    ‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for
    Anthony Albanese).’

    Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his
    time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

    ‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced
    the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

    ‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars
    and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

    ‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front
    of the plane on personal travel. 

    ‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

    Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

    But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

    Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

    ‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’
