Russia has said that the West was behaving like a bandit by imposing sanctions and cutting economic relations over the conflict in Ukraine.
However, Russia said it was far too big to be isolated, insisting that the world was much larger than just the United States and its allies.
Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Saturday that the United States of America and the rest of the West were engaged in “economic banditry” against Russia and that Moscow would respond.
He did not, however, specify what response there would be but said it would be in line with Russian interests.
As you understand, there must be a corresponding response to economic banditry,” Peskov said.
“This does not mean Russia is isolated.
“The world is too big for Europe and America to isolate a country, and even more so a country as big as Russia. There are many more countries in the world,” Peskov told reporters, according to Reuters.
Speaking further, the President Putin’s spokesperson said that channels for dialogue between his country and the US still existed, while noting that any sanction on Russia’s oil and gas exports would give a considerable jolt to world energy markets.

House. While Jill Biden has insisted on being called ‘Doctor’, Melania was
admired and beloved by the political and permanent staffers alike, asking after their children by name, welcoming them to events big and small, and treating them with inclusivity and respect.
Known as a protective and present mother, Melania now uses
her memoir to call out the ‘sheer malice’ of unfunny comic
Rosie O’Donnell who, in 2016, tweeted despicable and totally unfounded claims

It was just weeks after Trump had stunned the world and won, and the same liberal media and Hollywood types, who perpetuated every vicious attack against him, reveled as O’Donnell’s vile lie wormed its

her trust in them with self-serving lies and revisionist
history, she has declined, knowing that her silence is always more
powerful.
Behind closed doors, Trump has, for decades, regarded his wife as a top
confidante and counselor. Whether as an international
business mogul, a TV star or, lately, leader of the free world, it is Melania’s opinion that he has consistently sought.
Trump enjoys the company of plenty of friends, taking a range
of advice, but he speaks of – and to – Melania in an entirely unique way.
Really, he fears yet reveres her. He respects her independence,
seeks her input, trusts her keen eye, sharp ear and sense of people.
I have witnessed their relationship up close, and it is one fundamentally built
on mutual love and respect. Recently, as Barron was heading off for college and Melania was preparing to publish her memoir, I jokingly
asked Trump how it might feel to be the second most popular man and the second most prominent author in the household.

Melania Trump has plenty to say and nothing to prove. She is not a typical political spouse rushing to the cameras
on matters that are best handled privately, or loudly offering insights or slights about her husband’s political opponents à la Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.
She is an asset, a partner, an equal who is neither trying to control – looking at you, Jill
Biden – nor controlled by her partner. She is what many feminists insist they are: independent,
a product of her own choices, comfortable in her own skin.
She has been by Trump’s side the entire time. Though
never in his shadow. In fact, from that very first moment they descended the golden escalator, she’s been leading the way.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their
reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set to come
together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the
equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend
at an election – actually less than the major parties currently
spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure
thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes
political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using
their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to
which they can use their wealth at all will
be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and
frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to whom many months
later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big
money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying
if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a rort, not reform’. Teal
independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out
that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write
this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures
stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort
to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor
and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as
Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal funder Simon Holmes à
Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to
tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam Bandt and
Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions
of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to
take effect immediately, by the way. It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench
out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time
to absorb and understand the changes before preparing
for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor
and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor
to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to
come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to
get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not
cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about
being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

‘I believed then, as I do now, that women should take pride in their bodies,
not feel shame,’ Melania continued.
‘During my modeling days, posing nude was commonplace and hardly scandalous,’ she said.
‘To me, those images were artistic and tasteful, fitting for a publication like
Max, which showcased many renowned super-models.’
But there was another problem with the photographer
selling the photos of Melania to the newspaper – he originally said the photoshoot happened
a year before.
‘This misinformation led to unfounded allegations that I had illegally worked in the United States, a
claim propagated by the New York Post,’ she wrote.
‘Although the photographer later admitted the error, the damage was done – sensationalized lies about me spread worldwide, driven by a shameful pursuit of
scandal and profit,’ the former first lady added.

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required to book
the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient,
with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits,
which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary
dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and
their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance
this year, despite there being just two months left
of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

Often touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to the Chairman’s Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy.
Even the entrances to each of the country’s six opulent
VIP clubs – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and
Perth airports – are suitably discreet.
Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more
ostentatious, with free à la carte fine dining, table
service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.
Membership to the club is ‘priceless’ – it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor
obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points.
Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company’s chief executive and chairman.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights
As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate
has leaned heavily on a favorite theme — abortion rights for Democrat Kamala
Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump.
In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak,
with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums.
And in this key southwestern state — where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe
Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes — every
ballot truly will count.
In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution — and, while they’re at
it, to vote for Vice President Harris.
To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to “a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created.”
She added, “Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women’s health care and protect our democracy and protect all people.”

Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse,
has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited.
Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences
for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses
when doctors refuse to treat them.
“Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need,” she told AFP.
– ‘Abortion is murder’ –
As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three
justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights.

“It’s important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same,” Ireland said.
But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters.
“I do think that abortion is murder,” said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student.
“There are cases of incest or rape” that merit exceptions, he conceded, “but that’s very small.”
He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have
entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration.
“People that are entering the United States illegally… should be sent back to where they came from,” he said.
“My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way.”
So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let
local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally — powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government.
“I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they’re really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They’re not really able to do anything,” Lopez said.
– Mixed impact –
The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote — on ballot questions at the
very heart of the two presidential campaigns.

But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that
activists hope.
Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the
Republican holding a very narrow lead.
Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass.
So the abortion issue may not be “helping Democrats in the way that they would hope,” said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University.
Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump
back to the White House, Brian said.
Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs.
Republican issue, the Republican Party includes “a broad spectrum of views on the topic,” an issue that also raises conservatives’ concerns about “government interference,” she added.
The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also
“moderates and even many Democrats,” said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona
state senator.
The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris’s recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise
to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months.
The vice president, Kavanagh said, is “running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol.”

Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar could have given an order to execute all the hostages who remain in Gaza if he
died, a top Israeli negotiator has claimed.
Sinwar died on Wednesday after the IDF encountered him by chance,
sending a drone to kill the terror leader.
Gershon Baskin, the Israeli negotiator who oversaw Sinwar’s 2011 release
from an Israeli prison, along with 1,026 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the return of
kidnapped soldier Gilad Shilat, said that his death was a ‘moment of either opportunity or a moment of
doom.’
‘A moment of doom because there are rumours that Sinwar instructed people holding hostages that, should
he be killed, they should kill their hostages,’ he told the Telegraph.
At the time of Sinwar’s death, just over 100 hostages remained in Gaza, with 60
thought to still be alive.
Those who remain alive are at risk of never being returned to their families,
according Haaretz, which reported on Sunday that top US officials, including
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, have assessed there
is a slim chance of a deal being brokered, given the tensions between Israel and Hamas.

While Baskin told the Telegraph that it wasn’t possible to confirm whether Sinwar had a kill order on the
hostages, he said the rumours ought to be taken seriously, given how little Hamas appears to care for
them.
He cited the horrific killing of six hostages in tunnels under Rafah in late August.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the six were ‘cruelly murdered
by Hamas just a short time before we got to them.’
The six dead hostages were identified as Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Carmel Gat, 39, Almog Sarusi,
26, Alex Lubnov, 26, Ori Danino, 25, and Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23.
Five of those who were recovered had been attending the Nova music festival when Hamas terrorists began slaughtering festivalgoers, while taking others hostage.

He said the return of the hostages depended entirely on whether Israel is able to
make a deal with Hamas.
‘It’s a moment of opportunity where Israel should be issuing
a very clear call that anyone who’s holding a hostage that releases them will be
given free passage for themselves and their family out of Gaza to another country,
as well as a lot of money.
‘In order to encourage them to do that, Israel should also
be reaching out to Egypt and Qatar and tell them to renew the negotiations quickly, not on the deal
that’s been negotiated without success for almost four months,
but on a deal that would bring the hostages home quicker and would obviously
require Israel to end the war.’
He said a deal would likely mean the release of Palestinian prisoners, a controversial point for many Israelis who believe that their release

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday
against the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new
tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese
economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn Song, Greater China chief economist at
ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at
7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year
low of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s
central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but
property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak. China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,”
said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work
Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched
indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting
in March. During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5%
against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year
treasury yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield
disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore
yuan to move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to 7.50

is working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment
in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it
has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all
product launches for the year in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks, heated tobacco units intended for use
with its IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided to
scale down manufacturing operations in the country.

Feb 2 (Reuters) – Tobacco giants Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco said on Friday they had agreed to
resolve a multitude of ongoing patent infringement disputes relating to their cigarette
alternatives.
The cigarette makers had been fighting a multi-front patent dispute that has hurt both sides.
BAT, which makes Vuse vapes and Glo heated tobacco devices, was ordered to pay
PMI millions of dollars after losing one case, while PMI has been blocked from importing its flagship heated tobacco device IQOS into the United States as
part of another.
Under the non-monetary, worldwide settlement, which lasts for eight years, the companies
have agreed to dismiss all pending patent infringement cases, according to statements and filings from
the companies. It also prevents future claims against current products.
A PMI filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission added that under the agreement the parties will also request the block on IQOS imports
into the United States to be rescinded – a key win for
PMI as it looks to bring the device to the critical market this year.
“We are pleased that this matter has been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of both parties,” said Jacek Olczak,
PMI’s Chief Executive Officer.
“This agreement is an important step forward for BAT and all our stakeholders,” BAT Chief Executive Officer Tadeu Marroco said, adding it will allow the company to focus on innovation.
The agreement allows both companies to introduce future iterations of their products, they added in separate statements.
Shares in BAT briefly spiked after the news. They were up 1.4% at 1235 GMT.

Even if you’re not a wine drinker, chances are you’ve heard of organic wine.
But what is organic wine, and is it the same thing as natural wine?
Is organic wine healthier to drink than regular
wine? And finally, does it taste better than regular wine?
Is organic wine the same as natural wine?
While the terms organic wine and natural wine are often thrown about in equal measure, they aren’t the same
thing. In order for a liqueur to qualify as organic, the winemaker must adhere
to a stringent set of rules and obtain certification as an organic liquor producer after a 3 year
evaluation process. Once certification has been attained, organic winemakers are subjected to an inspection every
12 months to ensure that they are working within the designated ground rules.
Where organic winemaking is concerned, no synthetic substances are permitted to be implemented
in the cultivation of the grapevines or the harvesting of the grapes.
The use of preservatives during fermentation are limited.
It is important to note that some naturally grown liquors make use of thinning
products that are sourced from animals. These thinning products are used
to dissolve any excess solid compounds that are present in the
wines. Unfortunately, organic winemakers are not forced to disclose
whether or not animal-sourced products were used during the
manufacturing process. The only way to be certain that the way
does not contain animal-based additives is to purchase liqueur from a
trusted vegan product dealer.
Unlike organic wine, there are no predefined guidelines or compulsory certifications that are required to make natural wine.
The winemaker decides the methods and parameters that are used to achieve natural liqueur.
While they are free to decide the concentration of sulphur dioxide, many natural winemakers avoid adding it
altogether. Natural wine is not required to be made using naturally grown grapes.
The final outcome of natural wine is one that has only minor intervention or preservatives.
When a customer sees an organic certification emblem
displayed upon a liquor bottle, they can be confident that the
liqueur they are buying is produced according to the rigorous
regulations outlined by their respective wine growing regions.
Does organic or natural wine taste the same as regular wine?
When the grapevines from which the organically grown wine is produced are more wholesome and unpolluted than their regular wine counterparts, than it’s understandable that the liquor will also carry a superior taste.
Those who drink organically grown wines note that they
contain a greater spectrum of flavour, resulting in a more
robust taste. In addition to having a richer flavour, drinkers
of organic wines have also observed that the colours are more
vivid and lively.
Is there anything inherently bad with regular wine?
Wines that are produced using traditional processes are perfectly fine.
However, there are many winemakers and consumers alike
that simply desire a liqueur that does not make use of toxic insecticides and other poisonous additives during the winemaking process.
With the absence of synthetic toxins, the soil from which organic wines are produced
is untainted, ensuring that the wine is as well. Furthermore, the grapevines of organic wines yield grapes that deliver stronger flavours, resulting in wines that possess a more sumptuous taste.
How do you ensure you are buying a wine that is truly organic?
It’s important for consumers to be aware that numerous
winemakers brand their wines as organic, in an attempt to make a quick profit from the wholesome image
that sustainably grown products enjoy. Organic wines are required to carry a
certification logo, and in many countries the logo will contain a verification number.
This number guarantees that the liquor you are purchasing is authorised to be packaged and sold as organic
wine. If a product contains the word ‘organic’ in its name, without an accompanying industry label to verify its status as
such, then it should not be considered organic.
