    There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid
    them much heed. This was all about lashings of the
    black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at
    just under £150, is ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
    Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
    But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened
    to the great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a
    rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the
    stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent,
    indeterminate beats throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.

    They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
    Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover
    in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar
    and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.

    Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily
    confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
    effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we
    would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment,
    insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream,
    are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of
    oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
    Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
    But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every
    day if I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with
    caviar. One taste is never enough.

    Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight
    supper and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).

    The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef,
    or flavourful pork mince. This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.

    The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so
    you have a meal for an emergency.

    SERVES 4

    4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion

    1 onion, finely chopped

    2 garlic cloves, chopped

    400g tin chopped tomatoes

    200g white bread (day old, if possible)

    whole milk (enough to soak the bread)

    500g beef mince

    250g English veal mince

    2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra
    to serve

    4 anchovies, finely chopped

    2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

    salt and freshly ground black pepper

    350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)

    1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes
    and when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and
    leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.

    2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
    In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.

    Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
    Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.

    3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
    When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes)
    to ensure they colour all over. If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.

    4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
    Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
    Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
    Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.

    TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
    If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions until al dente.
    Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water
    to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer it
    back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
    Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the meatballs and

    DAMASCUS/NEW YORK, Dec 10 (Reuters) –

    An Israeli military incursion into Syria has reached about 25 km (16 miles) southwest of Damascus, Syrian security sources said on Tuesday, after Israel seized a buffer zone in southern Syria and launched
    air strikes on Syrian army and air bases overnight.

    Israel’s military operation into Syria comes two days after the lightning overthrow
    of

    President Bashar al-Assad

    by a rebel alliance left Syrians, regional countries and world
    powers nervous about what comes next.

    A Syrian security source said Israeli troops reached Qatana, which is 10 km (six miles) into Syrian territory east of
    a demilitarised zone separating Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria.

    The Israeli military declined comment.

    Israel has said it will not become involved in conflict in Syria and that its seizure
    of the buffer zone was a defensive move.

    Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have condemned the incursion. Saudi Arabia said
    the move would “ruin Syria’s chances of restoring security”.

    Regional security sources and officers within the now fallen Syrian army said heavy
    Israeli airstrikes continued against military installations and airbases across Syria overnight, destroying dozens of helicopters and jets, as well as Republican Guard assets in and around Damascus.

    The rough tally of 200 raids had left nothing of the Syrian army’s assets, they said.

    Israel said its airstrikes would carry on for days but told the U.N.
    Security Council that it was not intervening in Syria’s
    conflict. It said it had taken “limited and temporary measures” solely to protect its security.
    The United Nations Security Council met behind closed doors late on Monday, and diplomats said they were
    still in shock at how quickly Assad’s overthrow unfolded over 12 days, after a 13-year civil war that was locked in stalemate for years.

    “Everyone was taken by surprise, everyone, including the members of the council. So we have to wait and see and watch … and evaluate how the situation will develop,” Russian U.N.

    Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters after the body met.

    Russia played a major role in supporting Assad’s government
    and helping it fight the rebels. The Syrian leader fled Damascus for
    Moscow on Sunday, ending more than 50 years of brutal
    rule by his family.

    With the mood in Damascus still celebratory, Assad’s prime minister, Mohammed
    Jalali, on Monday agreed to hand power to the rebel-led Salvation Government,
    an administration based in rebel-held territory in northwest Syria.

    HOLLOWED OUT The main rebel commander Ahmed al-Sharaa, better known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani, met with Jalali and Vice President Faisal
    Mekdad to discuss the transitional government, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters.
    Jalali said the handover could take days to carry out.

    Al Jazeera television reported the transitional authority would be headed by Mohamed al-Bashir, who has headed the Salvation Government.

    The steamroller advance of the militia alliance headed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
    (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate, was a generational turning point for the Middle
    East.

    The civil war that began in 2011 killed hundreds of thousands,
    caused one of the biggest refugee crises of modern times and left cities bombed to rubble, countryside depopulated
    and the economy hollowed out by global sanctions.

    But the rebel alliance has not communicated plans for
    Syria’s future, and there is no template for such a transition in the fractious
    region.

    Oil prices rose more than 1% on Monday, partly on concerns that instability in Syria, which
    is not a major oil producer, could raise regional tensions, analysts said.

    “This is an incredible moment for the Syrian people,” Deputy U.S.
    Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood said in New York.
    “We’re really focused right now on trying to see where the situation goes. Can there be a governing authority in Syria that respects the rights and dignities of the Syrian population?” The U.S.

    was seeking ways to engage with Syrian rebel groups and is
    reaching out to partners in the region such as Turkey to start informal diplomacy, Washington said.

    Qatari diplomats spoke with HTS on Monday, an official briefed on the developments told Reuters,
    as regional states race to open contact with the group. There were tentative signs of a return to
    order. Syria’s banks will reopen on Tuesday, and the oil ministry called on all
    employees in the sector to head to work on Tuesday, adding that
    protection would be provided to ensure their safety.

    Reuters reporters saw four mini-buses arriving at the
    Central Bank of Syria, with employees disembarking and walking into the building
    for their first day of work since Assad´s fall.

    “It´s a new shift, it´s a new day, a new year, a new life,” said Sumayra al-Mukli.
    Golani has vowed to rebuild Syria, and HTS has spent years trying to soften its image to reassure foreign nations and minority groups within Syria.

    But fears of reprisals remained. HTS said it will not hesitate to hold security and army officers involved in torturing the
    Syrian people accountable, describing them as criminals and murderers.

    “We will release a list that includes the names of the most senior officials involved in the torturing of the Syrian people,” Golani said
    in a statement. “Rewards will be offered to those who will provide information about senior army and security officers involved in war crimes.”

    HTS is designated as a terrorist organisation by many states and the U.N., and its governing credentials are uncertain.

    “Syrians are looking forward to establishing a state of freedom, equality, rule of law, democracy, and we will join efforts to rebuild our country, to rebuild what was destroyed, and to rebuild the future, better future of Syria,” Syria’s U.N.
    Ambassador Koussay Aldahhak told reporters.

    As waves of loud, car-sized mystery drones continue to buzz over
    New Jersey, one family reported that the craft changed time on their car’s clock.

    The family of Morris County locals said they were following one of
    these seemingly terrestrial UFOs in their vehicle, only to experience the odd effect on their car’s electronics as the unexplained
    craft ‘hovered above them.’

    ‘The clock in their car changed time,’ according to one Fox
    News reporter who spoke to the unnamed family. ‘They say the clock went back to normal after they
    drove off.’

    While local law enforcement in Morris County has issued a statement asserting that
    ‘there is no known threat to public safety’ at this time — the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a ban on drone
    flights over sensitive areas in state.

    Last Tuesday, the FBI described the sightings as only ‘possible drones’ and ‘a possible fixed wing aircraft’ in its efforts to get to the bottom of the night flights.

    But residents within the eight-and-counting New Jersey counties where the strange
    craft have been sighted are also taking matters into their own hands
    with over 17,000 trading notes on the sightings
    in a dedicated Facebook group. 

    One local software engineer, who specializes in radio communications,
    believes the temporary alteration of the car’s clock
    is a clue to the origin of these mystery drones.

    ‘Many newer cars get their clock time from GPS satellites since that’s one of
    the most accurate time signals you’re going to get in a vehicle,’ the engineer, Rich Dunajewski, posted to the Facebook group. 

    ‘If these are using GPS jamming or spoofing,’ Dunajewski explained,
    ‘then it’s plausible the car would follow the signal and change the clock to match whatever signal
    is coming from the drone/plane.’

    The flying objects are larger than drones used by hobbyists, raising questions about their proximity
    to specific locations – including to President-elect
    Donald Trump ‘s Bedminster golf course, US military research
    facility Picatinny Arsenal and critical infrastructure, police said

    Residents within the eight-and-counting New Jersey counties where the strange craft have been sighted are also taking matters into their own hands with over 17,
    000 trading notes on the sightings in a dedicated Facebook group

    ‘So don’t think aliens,’ the engineer continued, ‘think foreign actors using electronic warfare methods.’

    Dunajewski noted that GPS spoofing onboard these mysterious aircraft would also explain the
    car clock’s return to normal time.

    ‘Once you’re out of range of the spoofed GPS signal,
    the clock will reacquire the real GPS signal with
    the correct time,’ he said in his Facebook post.

    While some locals are not buying it, with one saying, ‘We need to accept that
    these are not just “drones,” these are UFO/UAP,’ other experts did agree with Dunajewski.  

    A contractor with the FAA’s Office of Communications, David Lombardo, cosigned the ‘radar
    jamming or GPS spoofing’ theory, writing: ‘It’s very likely that these drones have some
    sort of electronic interference capabilities.’

    While Lombardo said he did not believe that ‘the FBI wouldn’t get involved if
    a bunch of drones were just pissing people off,
    ‘ the FAA contractor also confessed that he currently saw no evidence actual law-breaking yet. 

    ‘Nothing that these drones have done appears to be criminal or really against any rules,
    so far as I know. I mean, they’re being weird… there’s no crime in being weird.’

    But retired police lieutenant Tim McMillan argued that the drones fit a pattern of Russian psychological warfare operations internationally.

    Lt McMillan reported that both the mysterious drone flights over New Jersey mirror a
    2022 incident in which drones flew over sensitive sites in Sweden just as the European nation was considering joining NATO. 

    ‘This recent drone wave is likely in response to the West green lighting Ukraine to use ATACMS inside Russia,’ the retired
    police investigator posted to X.

    Neither Moscow, nor local amateur drone pilots, nor any other actors terrestrial
    or extraterrestrial, has claimed credit for the unusual
    flights over New Jersey, however.

    If proven to be a covert invasion of sorts, it would
    the first in this part of the Garden State since British troops sparred with American colonists over 240 years ago. 

    ‘I grew up in Morris County,’ one local resident posted on X, ‘and this is the most exciting event since the Revolutionary War.’ 

    ‘Anyone wonder why New Jersey?’ another resident asked.

    The anonymous family who reported their car clock’s reaction to this eerie and unexplained aircraft were just some of the new witnesses to
    speak to Fox News about this ongoing wave of UFO sightings.

    the drones, some as big as compact cars, roaring over the sky in procession.

    Post to social media site X, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy echoed similar words to calm the
    public. 

    ‘I convened a briefing with [Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas] @SecMayorkas, senior officials
    from [the Department of Homeland Security] @DHSgov … and members of our congressional delegation to discuss reported drone activity over parts of North and Central
    New Jersey,’ he wrote.

    ‘There is no known threat to the public at this time,’ the governor said.

    Nevertheless, New Jersey residents have been encouraged to report any sightings,
    videos or photos they may have of the UFO drone
    flights to the FBI, via phone at 1-800-CALL-FBI
    (1-800-225-5324) or online via tips@fbi.gov.

    An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a
    time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.

    Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn’t come cheap.
    There may have been other things on the menu, but no one
    paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

    Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few
    better dishes on earth…only the price, at
    just under £150, is ridiculous’

    Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
    And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by
    Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
    It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
    Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
    But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning
    the doors were opened to the great unwashed.

    Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under
    the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table
    lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the
    background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.

    Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty,
    clad in diaphanous couture. They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via
    camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post.
    Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.

    We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
    croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
    Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.

    We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and
    charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’,
    we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as
    parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and
    sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of
    oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime.
    Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
    But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if
    I could. But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the
    problem with caviar. One taste is never enough.
