Folie à Deux has gone viral amid the backlash the film is facing
The highly anticipated Joker sequel hit theaters on Friday,
but was almost immediately panned by viewers and critics
For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as they both waited for the other to answer
the question.
‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38, said to her costar as she held out a fake microphone in front of him.
‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we
feel like we achieved what we set out to do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated.
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online last week and it went
viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days
– and many users took their initial silence as proof that they ‘didn’t like’ the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick ever since it premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s
final scene, which saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by
a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the
course of the two movies was never the Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random inmate who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to social media to
share their frustration.
While chatting with Good Morning Britain last
week, the two stars were asked if the movie turned out to be ‘everything
they expected’
Immediately, they both turned to look at one another and smiled. For a few seconds,

‘WTF you mean no Joker?’
‘The ending made no sense,’ added another person.
‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker 2
but also the first Joker for the audience,’ read a
fourth tweet.
‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending ruined everything,’
a fifth said.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up to the 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled
Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend,
and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the
sequel convolutes what could have been a unique character study into a bloated
encore that goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess
and a waste of time. It’s just tired, not particularly interesting, but it
does look good from a production design standpoint.’

The existence of an exclusive hideaway for the
country’s movers and shakers where secret deals were done in private luxury first exploded into the public
eye back in 2007.
Back then, the fact that Qantas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars
wining and dining the nation’s political elite in ultra-exclusive VIP lounges was relatively
unknown.
It was a time before Alan Joyce’s tenure as the CEO of Qantas had even started,
when he was boss of the comparatively lowly budget airline, Jetstar.
And unlike Anthony Albanese’s current slide in the polls leading up to
an election in next year, the prospects back in 2007 were rosy for Labor.
The election that was looming was the ‘Kevin 07’ landslide that would see Kevin Rudd become prime minister and John Howard lose
his own seat.
The issue which blew open the ‘guilty secret’ of the Chairman’s Lounge
then wasn’t about a prime minister’s privileges, although John Howard and Kevin Rudd were certainly
both members during their terms as PM.
But when broadcaster Steve Price – himself a long
time Chairman’s Lounge member – revealed a politically
charged remark made within the club’s hallowed walls, the cat was out of the
bag.
The political revelation – a comment by ex-rock star turned senator Peter Garrett that Labor would
change the policies it campaigned on if it won government – did not deter his party from romping in on election day.
In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese
about his Chairman’s Lounge membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt,
and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002
during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about
the VIP club
The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.
In a first person piece he wrote: ‘The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate frequent flyers
lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas Club.
‘As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman, Margaret Jackson.
‘I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’
In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins
was also a member of lounge.
Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness
to the remark Price said Garrett had made.
Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors
and performers, and well-known writers and sports people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.
Price went on to defend himself for reporting what some claimed was a confidential
conversation in a private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly
promoting Qantas on his radio show.

One observer has described the relationship bet6ween leading politicians such

‘Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock
jock membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable
our elite politicians and business leaders some privacy from
the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey reporter Stephen Mayne
at the time.
‘The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking ‘a confidence’.
The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the sole gatekeeper of entry into the
club’s hushed confines.

The report noted that politicians declaring membership of the lounge ‘which most of their spouses got too’ in their
pecuniary interests that year included Liberal MPs of the
day, Philip Ruddock, Bob Baldwin and Andrew Southcott.
Labor MPs with lounge privileges included Tanya Plibersek, Bob McMullan, and Sharon Grierson, and Martin Ferguson declared a bottle of Grange hermitage as a gift from Qantas, as did
Liberal, Christopher Pyne.
Asked if all MPs got the captain’s pick from Geoff Dixon, the airline’s spokesperson told Nine: ‘We like to retain a
bit of mystery. Membership is by invitation only and it is
reviewed periodically.’
Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the
country has accepted free membership of the controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as an ‘entitlement’.
Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the ‘very, very high-end perk’ gives the
airline a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.
They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book The Chairman’s Lounge
by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred
up the controversy.
A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’ interest registers – in both
Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate
– revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation’s leaders have been ‘gifted’ membership to
the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.
Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest
statements.
At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of
his upgrades ‘have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is
transparency.’
Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his
seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer
Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe
Longo and some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s Lounge despite regulating
the airline.
Senior public servants in the club included Department
of Prime Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams,
Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.
Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model
Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points, and tickets to sporting and entertainment events.
Touted as ‘the most exclusive club in the country’, membership to
the Chairman’s Lounge is still veiled in secrecy.

Once inside, however, the designer lounges are noticeably luxurious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge
attendants.
Virgin Airlines has its own version of the VIP enclave, the
‘Beyond’ lounge.
Only a handful of federal politicians have relinquished
their membership to the Qantas Chairman’s Lounge in the wake of the furore.
The select few to take a principled stand on the issue include South
Australian senator Barbara Pocock and former Wallabies
star turned ACT senator David Pocock, along with MPs Stephen Bates, Queensland Green Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and Monique Ryan, a Teal from Victoria.
Geoffrey Watson SC, a former counsel assisting the Independent
Commission Against Corruption and a director of the Centre for
Public Integrity, has implored all politicians and policymakers to follow suit.
‘There are certain positions in life where you cannot take Chairman’s Club membership,’ he said.
‘You’re taking public money for the job and you are supposed to represent the public.

President Joe Biden urged Donald Trump to rethink his tariff war with Canada and Mexico, fretted about the state of
the mainstream media and offered what he was thankful for during a visit with firefighters on Thursday.
The president kicked off his Thanksgiving holiday by delivering pumpkin pies to Nantucket firefighters.
He was accompanied by first lady Jill Biden and their grandson Baby Beau.
He paused to take questions from reporters to reflect
on the holiday season and discuss the actions of his successor
in the Oval Office.
He said he hopes Trump rethinks his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada,
saying it could ‘screw up’ relationships with close allies.
‘I hope he rethinks it. I think it’s a counterproductive thing to do,’ he said.
‘We’re surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic
Ocean, and two allies: Mexico and Canada. The last thing we need
to do is begin to screw up those relationships.’

Trump threatened to impose tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico and
China as soon as he takes office in January as part of efforts to crack down on illegal immigration and drugs.
He said he would impose a 25% tax on all products entering the U.S.
from Canada and Mexico as one of his first executive orders.
Trump said that he would also seek to impose additional tariffs on China, an additional 10% on all tariffs until they stop fentanyl from being sent into the United States.
Canadian officials blasted Trump’s proposal and said the country will have no choice but
to retaliate.

The Bidens are staying at the $34 million luxurious compound owned by billionaire businessman turned philanthropist David Rubenstein.
The 13-acre compound has a 13,000 square foot house,
a private beach, and private dock.
It’s a sprawling property that sits on the island’s
secluded inner harbor with gorgeous views of the water as the sun sets in the background.
Rubenstein bought the waterfront property in 2000 for his now ex-wife
Alice and their three children. He tore down the existing house and put up a 13,000-square-foot home which
features a tennis court, swimming pool, hot tub and private
dock.
Zillow estimates it would cost $30,000 a month to rent.
The Bidens have been going to Nantucket for 49 years, dating back to when Biden was a U.S.
senator.
In his 2017 memoir ‘Promise me Dad,’ Biden wrote that Thanksgiving in 1975 was
the first holiday he and his now-wife Jill spent together,
going to Nantucket with his young sons Beau and Hunter for a little bonding time.
They rarely have missed a holiday on Nantucket since.
One of the few Thanksgivings the Bidens missed there was in 2015, which took place
about six months after Beau Biden died.
The family went to Rome instead. They also skipped going in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Wallflowers get their name from their habit of
growing near stone walls.

Actea simplex ‘Brunette’ is a cultivar that has been given the Royal

After finishing with a .500 record last season, the Houston Rockets are playing aggressively
and unselfishly — and they’re surging.
The Rockets will look to sweep their two-game road trip Wednesday night when they visit the scuffling Philadelphia 76ers.
Houston improved to 13-6 with a hard-fought, 117-111 overtime win against the
Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday. The Rockets rallied from
a five-point deficit with just under two minutes left in regulation before storming in front in the
extra session.
Fred VanVleet recorded 27 points and 11 assists and Alperen Sengun notched
a triple-double for Houston, which squandered an 18-point lead before prevailing against a tough opponent.
“So, I said to the team, `That was probably one of the sweetest wins of the year, for those reasons,'” Rockets coach Ime Udoka said, adding that “a lot of teams would fold when you let a big lead like that go away. We had to find a way to get it back.”
Houston finished with 31 assists on 45 buckets and knocked down 15 of 37 3-pointers
(40.5 percent), including six by VanVleet and four by Dillon Brooks.
“It was poppin’ around, and you’ve got to make shots, obviously, to take advantage of that,” Udoka said.
“We didn’t really get bogged down too often tonight.”
The Rockets are 8-2 in their past 10 games as they continue
to climb in the Western Conference standings.
“When we play like this, it’s really hard to play against us,” Sengun said.
“We played hard. We shared the ball. … That’s the game we are playing lately, and everybody enjoys it. We look different this season.”
Meanwhile, the Sixers look different as well — but
not in a good way.
Philadelphia snapped a five-game losing streak
Friday against the Brooklyn Nets, but the momentum didn’t last through the weekend, as the 76ers were pounded by the Los Angeles Clippers 125-99 on Sunday.
Nick Nurse’s team fell behind by 19 points in the first quarter and allowed the Clippers to shoot 58 percent from the field
for the game.
“I think there’s several things, but the biggest thing was just lack of keeping the ball in front of us, really, from the defensive end,” Nurse said.
“They just drove it to wherever they wanted to to start the game.”
Philadelphia continued to play without Joel Embiid and Paul George, both of whom are nursing
knee injuries, as well as Kyle Lowry (hip). All three will miss the matchup with Houston, the
team announced Monday.
In the meantime, the Sixers have one of the league’s worst records at 3-13 amid a slew of key injuries.
One positive has been the play of rookie guard Jared
McCain, who is averaging 16.6 points this season, although he
was just 3 of 15 from the field in Sunday’s setback.
“I don’t know,” McCain said. “I mean, I think we’ve just got to come up with more energy. It’s something that we can control. We can always control our effort and energy, but we’re not right now. … So I feel like we’ve just got to talk about that and make sure we just adjust.”
Philadelphia has won eight of the past nine matchups with Houston, including
both meetings last season.

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as
calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks he
took from the airline.
Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas
chair.
This has raised concerns over how impartial
the body would be when dealing with Qantas matters.
If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades
from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a
new book, he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code
of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking
‘any kind of benefit’
Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023, as did the CEO Philip Reed
and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe
and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the requirements to serve
the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a
seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy
when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a new
book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist
Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which
included Minister for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles
and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus
one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared
in the appropriate way’.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first
place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving
arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties
look set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend
in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a
$90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to
influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use
their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed
and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the
details of who has given what to whom many months later,
well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected
into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with
the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning
shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s
a rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding
out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures
stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to
accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal
of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply,
the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer
Another potential target of the laws is businessman and Teal
funder Simon Holmes à Court
The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their
irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens leader Adam
Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields
behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations
from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are
running a mile from reforms that will curtail
dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving
everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor
and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor
to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions
are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the
Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench
should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard
false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

Anthony Albanese has tried to claim his relationship with
Alan Joyce was a strictly professional one between a Prime Minister and a corporate titan,
as he battles claims the Qantas boss was his ‘personal travel agent’ for free flights and upgrades.
However that characterization of the relationship was at odds with that made by Mr Joyce,
who said he was ‘good mates’ with Mr Albanese and had been ‘for years’.
In the wake of the explosive claims that the Prime
Minister had Mr Joyce arrange free tickets and upgrades, Mr Albanese distanced himself from the Qantas
chief.
When asked about about their relationship on Sunday Mr Albanese implied it
was purely in a professional capacity, having been Transport
Minister and shadow transport spokesperson before becoming Prime Minister.
‘He (Joyce) was the CEO of the national airline …
I had the same relationship with him that I have with John Borghetti as the CEO of Virgin,’ Mr Albanese said.
That assessment was at odds with the many photos showing Mr Albanese and
Mr Joyce apparently greatly enjoying each other’s company.
Mr Albanese and Mr Joyce were pictured in high spirits on the red carpet at the Qantas 100th Gala Dinner in March last year.
In photos from the event, Mr Joyce proudly walks the red carpet with one
arm around the prime minister and the other around Mr Albanese’s partner, Jodie Haydon.
Just five months later, in August, a smiling Mr Albanese attended Qantas’s unveiling of it’s special ‘Yes 23′
emblazoned airplanes for the Voice referendum.
Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce jovially walked the red carpet with one arm around the
prime minister and the other around his partner, Jodie Haydon for a special anniversary event last year
Mr Joyce was seen touching Mr Albanese’s arm, with the PM bursting into laughter.
Even when Scott Morrison was PM, Mr Joyce enjoyed an apparently close relationship
with Mr Albanese as the pair stood close together at the
launch of the Qantas’ landmark Perth to London flight
in March, 2018.
During a Senate hearing in September 2023, Mr Joyce said he had been ‘friends for years’ with Mr Albanese.
Asked about why he gifted Mr Albanese’s son Nathan a membership to the prestigious and exclusive Chairman’s Lounge Mr Joyce refused to confirm or deny but talked up his

Reports have emerged in a new book Mr Albanese received 22 upgrades
from economy from Qantas and he would liaise personally with the former airline boss for them.
Aston also alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while in his
various parliamentary jobs to ask for special upgrades for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr
Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu, with some being for holidays.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that the London flights
was for work purposes and all were ‘declared in the
appropriate way’.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has leapt on the accusations describing
Mr Albanese as being the ‘best friend’ of Mr Joyce.
Mr Dutton told Sky News on Monday night it was ‘strange’ Mr Albanese had directly contacted
Mr Joyce to request upgrades while holding a regulatory position in the transport sector.
‘If you’re the Transport Minister and you’re picking up
the phone to one of the most important stakeholders in the portfolio asking
for a free upgrade, then again, I think the Prime Minister would be able to answer those questions more effectively than anyone else
because I’m not aware of anyone else having done it,’ Mr Dutton said.

NSW city of Newcastle.
‘The only discussions that I can recall with Alan Joyce certainly were not discussed

Australia to Dubai on the A380,’ he said.
‘I’ve declared everything in accordance with all of the rules.’
Aston was asked on Monday night by ABC interviewer Sarah Ferguson about how
confident he was that Mr Albanese had made calls personally to Mr Joyce for
upgrades.
‘I am very comfortable with my sourcing,’ Aston said.
Asked whether he thought Mr Albanese had been influenced by Mr Joyce’s lobbying to block UAE airline Qatar domestically Aston said
it was ‘implausible’ to think that the Prime Minister’s office had nothing to do with the decision.

‘It’s very hard to imagine a decision of any political sensitivity in the Albanese government that would not go through the

He noted the opening up of the Australian domestic
market Qatar had seemingly been sailing through with
Transport Minister Catherine King speaking warmly about
the proposal until ‘everything changed’ to stop it dead in tracks.
Ms King repeatedly denied in parliament the decision to block Qatar was due to Qantas lobbying her or any Labor colleagues.
Despite Mr Albanese claiming he declared every upgrade
received from Qantas the Australian Financial Review reported on Tuesday that
he failed to do for his former wife Carmel Tebbutt when the two traveled together.

Another awkward paradox of Mr Albanese’s apparent
close relationship with Mr Joyce is that the Labor leader in a
trade unionist advocate while Qantas attempted to break the power of the Transport
Workers Union by sacking 1700 staff during Covid.
The sacking has since been ruled illegal by Federal Court in a case brought by the union with Qantas facing possible hundreds of thousands in compensation payouts.
The friendship however did find one perhaps unlikely defender in semi-retired 3AW radio star Neil
Mitchell.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday
against the dollar, but is headed for its tenth straight
weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling
Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up U.S.
inflation, but they believe Beijing will prevent the yuan from falling too much.
“We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn
Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at 7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low
of 7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its
decline, said Alvin Tan, strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s
economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving,
but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at the
conference to agree on major economic goals
for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for
clues of Beijing’s near-term policy intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting
in March. During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5% a year later
when trade tensions escalated. Growth worries and expectations
of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury
yields below 2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song
expects the onshore yuan to move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but

LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International is preparing to launch its flagship heated tobacco
device IQOS in Austin, Texas, indicating it will be the first
testing ground for its U.S. entry, job adverts on LinkedIn show.
IQOS, the top selling heated tobacco device globally,
sits at the core of the world’s biggest tobacco company’s efforts to transform its image from
a purveyor of cigarettes to a driving force behind the switch to healthier options.
Investors are waiting to see if Philip Morris (PMI) can create
a market for heated tobacco in the United States, where vaping currently dominates.
The country offers PMI a substantial base of new users
and, potentially, a hefty new income stream that could prove transformative as it
tries to generate an increasing proportion of revenue from
products other than cigarettes.
PMI spent the vast majority of $10.7 billion of expenditure on smoking alternatives between 2008 and 2022 on IQOS’ development.
The Marlboro maker had said it planned to launch the device in four cities in two U.S.
states starting with one city in the second quarter, ahead of a broader
roll-out likely in 2025. However it had not released further details, including around which cities or states it is targeting.
Job adverts posted on LinkedIn reveal that the company is laying
the groundwork for an IQOS launch in Austin, Texas.
The adverts, posted this month, include positions as field sales representatives, territory managers and retail sales advisors.
Whether or not IQOS takes off in the United States will be significant given the market’s size.
Euromonitor estimates total U.S. nicotine sales, excluding
nicotine replacement therapies, were worth some $143.6
billion in 2022.
While cigarettes accounted for the vast majority of that,
Euromonitor forecasts their value will shrink by 30% by
2027. The value of vapes, heated tobacco products and other
alternatives will rise by 36% over the same period, it says.
TESTING GROUND
Products like IQOS work by heating up sticks of ground
up tobacco without burning them in an attempt to avoid the harmful chemicals released via
combustion.
Heated tobacco products have so far been largely absent
from the U.S. market aside from limited sales of IQOS managed by PMI’s former parent,
Altria, and another product offered on a limited scale by British American Tobacco.
PMI paid Altria $2.7 billion for the rights to market IQOS in the United States in 2022.
BAT has subsequently cast doubt on the category’s potential in the
country, where vaping and other alternatives are already well established.
Texas offers an interesting trial market given its broad demographics, ranging from
super rural to highly urban, said Brett Cooper, managing partner and analyst
at Consumer Edge, an equity research firm. He added that diverse cities like Austin, Houston and Dallas provide access to
a wide range of consumer groups.
Tobacco taxes in the state are also relatively low,
according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.
The excise tax rate on a pack of cigarettes in Texas stood at $1.41 in September 2023, the data shows – far
higher than the 17 cents in Missouri but also well below the more than $5 per pack in New York.
Texas introduced new laws around e-cigarettes in January,
restricting devices that resemble food products like candy or fruit juice, or that include a symbol or celebrity image targeted
at minors or depict cartoon-like fictional characters.
PMI bets IQOS can win a 10% share of U.S. tobacco and heated
tobacco unit volume by around 2030.
Ahead of IQOS’ launch, the company has also been building out its lobbying firepower across the United States.
The company wants two thirds of its revenue to
