Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and
integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament
in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments
against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look
set to come together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent
of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for
donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the
speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to
be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations
get made – but you only find out the details of who has given what to
whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning
by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to
$16,000 under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
labeling them a ‘stitch-up’, ‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort,
not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the
virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united
crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing
cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

The major parties have long complained about
the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à
Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue
are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the
next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for
them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the
Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the laws
with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include
hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which
would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore
disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these
proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should
offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the
package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one of the stars of
Purple Rain during the making of the film, Susan Moonsie.
Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004 Grammy Awards,
performing a medley that included his iconic 1984 single Purple Rain.

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.
dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal
Reserve’s September meeting minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the
yuan after a sharp rally to a seven-week high last
week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips lower than the previous late session close
at 7.066. Prior to the market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC)
set the midpoint rate, around which the yuan is allowed
to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3 pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.
China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since Sept.
13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday
failed to offer much new on stimulus plans to revive the economy.
The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due
to broad dollar strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.
China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said
UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term
risk reward is unattractive. “Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.
Nevertheless, market participants are still
awaiting additional stimulus measures that could help further
lift China asset sentiment. Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.
2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note to clients.
The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar,
up about 0.09% in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair
Isle knit. Once considered ‘ugly’ knitwear we’d only pull out from the back of our wardrobes as an alternative to a Christmas jumper (especially
the red-nosed reindeer kind à la Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary) or for a winter sport holiday (specifically for
après-ski), the Fair Isle jumper has now become somewhat of
a fashion statement.
The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting technique to create those distinctive
patterns with multiple colours. It was brought into
vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward
VIII) in the 1920s, and has remained a casual wardrobe
staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest
by Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a
snap for Instagram. The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck
vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple, and sported
a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white, straight-leg jeans,
black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for AW24,
proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.

The Joker’s real identity was revealed in Folie à Deux’s ‘brutal
ending’ – and it’s not who you think.
Identity confusion is the theme throughout the entire film, as the title suggests,
but the ending of the second instalment may leave some fans surprised.
Following on from 2019’s psychological thriller from director Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as clown Arthur Fleck who has descended
into mental illness.
Folie à Deux begins with Arthur behind bars in Arkham
Asylum, waiting to see whether he will be judged sane enough to stand trial for the murders he committed two years prior.
In the meantime he is enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one
of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson, feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

Lady Gaga plays Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel, a fellow inmate on her way, fans believe, to becoming
Joker’s girlfriend Harley Quinn.
The pair hit it off at a music therapy class, and are soon mutually smitten, but Lee makes it clear
that she loves the dangerously charismatic Joker, ‘clown prince
of crime’, not the gloomily introspective Arthur.
Eventually, after Arthur’s high-profile TV appearance with a smug interviewer
played by Steve Coogan, it is time for the trial, with all of Gotham gripped by the subject of multiple personality disorder.
His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke is accused of five murders,
rather than Arthur. Lee just as urgently wants him to
identify as his demonic alter ego.
In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is found guilty of first-degree murder.
As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates outside the court, with two people helping Arthur escape,
but he is later caught by the police and taken back to Arkham.
In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell Arthur
a joke, before stabbing him in the stomach and
while he bleeds to death, carves a smile into his own face.
It raises questions surrounding the Joker’s true identity, as it would seem he never went on to become the famed villain, instead he was just
the person who inspired the man who eventually became him.

this idea that Gotham people put on him, that he represents.
‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he doesn’t want to live
as a fake anymore — he wants to be who he is.’
The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019
box office hit, which was simply titled Joker.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical was released in theatres on October 4, following
an October 2 international release.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship with Prince began or ended as he was
dating another one of the stars of Purple Rain during the making of the film,
Susan Moonsie.
Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at
the 2004 Grammy Awards, performing a medley that included his iconic
1984 single Purple Rain.
Their duet also included her fan favorite number Crazy In Love, which saw him accompany her on the electric guitar.
Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his
appraisal of Beyonce’s musical abilities when they
worked together.

Folie à Deux, a number of fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend in defense of
the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the
lead role of The Joker/Arthur Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections,
and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for
the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the
cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the
first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive
as people are making it out to be. I love that the film
didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the
storytelling they presented. It never deviated to
be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured
as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom
and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Some users said that the bad word-of-mouth the film was suffering from was impacting the opinions of moviegoers.
‘The Joker 2 hate is so forced like did we watched the
same movie????????’ one user said, while another said the hate for the film
is ‘so unjustified.’
One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand the
test of time with audiences.
‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely liked the Joker
2. Remember me when society circles back to it in 10
years and says its a masterpiece,’ said the user.
‘The world just wasn’t ready for it yet.’
Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. If you don’t like musicals or ‘art house’ style films you
probably won’t like it because it’s not made for you. The dynamic between Harley
and Joker was brilliant and showcased the ‘obsession’ that is key to that duo.’
The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many in the industry wondering: How
did the highly anticipated sequel to an Oscar-winning,
billion-dollar film with the same creative team go wrong?
Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch in October
2019.

dropping from 63 percent at Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews:
Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It got a meager half star out of five possible.
‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or
$50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a
solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as
much as the first film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the
reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came
from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens,
bringing its total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker
2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot,
which added $18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to nearly $64 million. Globally,
it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third place
in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s
Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just
$1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start is an unwelcome
twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie
Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired to
make something as ‘audacious’ as the first
film. The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker superfan, and delved
further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he
committed in the first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and
dance numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside
the film.
The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it
was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie. In cruder
terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics,
especially when it comes to opening their wallets to
see revered comic book characters on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to
want to know what they´re getting when they´re going to the
theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started
with the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical.
‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the
wrong message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was about.
Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture
and best director, and three wins. It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine
took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick ever since it
premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming
it had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the movie’s final scene, which saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to
death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the two movies was never the Joker at
all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random
inmate who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied, and they took to
social media to share their frustration.

It received 11 Oscar nominations – two of which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend,
and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel convolutes what could have been a unique
character study into a bloated encore that goes out with a whimper,
‘ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.
It’s just tired, not particularly interesting,
but it does look good from a production design standpoint.’

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament
in the first place hear themselves?
In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral
reforms that the major parties look set to come
together to support.
The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals
can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the
equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend
at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.
The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure
thresholds for donations, thus increasing the
transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.
So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their
cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they
can use their wealth at all will be limited.
The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the
speed and frequency that disclosures of donations need to be made.
At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but
you only find out the details of who has given what to whom
many months later, well after elections are won and lost.
In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater
transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning by the wealthy.
Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running scared’ with the policy
and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’
Greens senate leader Larissa Waters (left) fired a warning shot – saying if it serves only the major parties ‘it’s a
rort, not reform’. Teal independent ACT senator David Pocock (right) said: ‘What
seems to be happening is a major-party stitch-up’
Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000
under the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.
Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws, labeling them a ‘stitch-up’,
‘outrageous’ and ‘a rort, not a reform’.
They have lost their collective minds after finding
out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.
I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write
this column.
Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out
the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the
virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals,
in a united crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.
More fool me.
The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being
put forward by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.
It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals doth
protest too much on this issue.
Labor is thought to be trying to muscle out major political donors such as Clive Palmer

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules (Greens
leader Adam Bandt and Senator Mehreen Faruqi are pictured)
The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of
Simon Holmes à Court wields behind the scenes amongst the Teals.
And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from
the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations
rules.
Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.
The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power
play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.
They are aiming for implementation by 2026,
giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.
Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the
opposition want to go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.
As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages
in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.
But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer
their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated
for.
They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.
To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false
commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things up’.

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US
federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer
James Jacobson allegedly used a “casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New York.
Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to the east of
New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up
by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to
be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to
his ankle.

men to have sex with him and Smith.
Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and
March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion” to traffic men in a sprawling
prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale was probably much
larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and
Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco
to have sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the
other defendants and was released on half a million dollars bond in October.

from his daughter’s book, Tony admitted he was not shocked by the
revelations.
‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.
‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After
all, its my daughter we’re talking about. If it was somebody else, it would be a different story
altogether. I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things
happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate
and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door,
she put her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down,
w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first time about her years-long battle with drugs
which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic in November in 2022.
During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the height of
her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a
day.
